Mr Shaun McLean, Director of Sport
Heading out to Iona, there was a buzz of expectation on the bus. Once again, warmly greeted on arrival, the tables were filled and it was play time!
Round 1 saw some very close games, and we were sitting in a not-so promising position. Having been dominated by Iona in the Trials, our lads were expecting a tough round……. And Round 1 was TOUGH! After completing the round, we were winning in only two divisions, with four drawn divisions and four to Iona. The positive in our Round 1 was that our Firsts were ahead, and so the afternoon was tense and suspenseful.
Once again though, the fightback came through, with lads winning and the tables were turning. By the end of Round 2, the countable divisions were sitting at Iona 3, Villanova 2 and 2 drawn rounds. Right down to the final match, which created a wonderful air of excitement, around twenty spectators watched over an intermediate match which could have determined an outright win for Iona or a drawn round. Thomas McDougall, Year 8 overthrew his opponent, and the cheering was immense! Well done Tom! You made a difference when it was really needed.
Our Chess season comes to an end this Friday with our home round against St Peter’s Lutheran College, undefeated in many divisions. However, this will not stop our boys from giving it all they have. Wishing you the very best this Friday, Carn the Cats, and then we’ll celebrate!
Mrs Kath Underhill, Chess Coordinator
The improvement demonstrated by so many runners throughout the Cross-Country season has been a privilege to witness.
‘Perseverance, God’s greatest gift, never give up!’ St Augustine
I would like to acknowledge and thank the coaches for the expertise, dedication, and enthusiasm they brought to the Cross-Country program again this year. The numbers of runners that continues to grow is a direct reflection of the passion the coaches have for running, and their desire to see young men develop into better versions of themselves.
In appreciation we recognise the positive intent and efforts of Jordan Roach (’01), Gerard Gannon (’79), Joaquin Wieczorek (’23) and Mitchell Rieck (’23). I would like to acknowledge the gifts brought to the squad by staff new to Villa, Matt Smith and Jane Weule whose strengths complemented and enhanced Villa’s Cross-Country program.
Villanova gained a credible equal third place at the AIC Championships. This great result was a fair reflection of the performance of the Running Wildcats on AIC Championship Day.

I ask each of the Running Wildcats to consider developing your running passion and see where it takes you in the future by continuing to run throughout the year.
Several of the Running Wildcats continue their running training and I hope more of you test yourself by continuing to run and consider joining an external squad to stay running.
Congratulations to all members of the Running Wildcats on an excellent AIC Cross-Country season.
Mr Brian Pascoe, Cross-Country Coordinator
Last weekend saw us come up against our old rivals in Iona College. This round is always a tough and competitive match up across all sports and once again – it proved no different across all Football matches.
Overall, we had 10 wins, five draws and 13 losses. It was great seeing the improvement from a lot of teams across the day who played Iona in trials earlier in the term which resulted in some unfortunate heavy defeats. During the term, we’ve asked all players to keep training hard weekly, learn from our mistakes and always look to improve by listening to your coaches. Thank you to all players for keeping up a positive attitude and showing that true Villanova spirit.
This weekend we come up against SPLC in the last round of the season, I once again ask all players to make sure that they finish the season strongly and put in a great team performance to end the season. It’s very easy to look at wins and losses and judge the season purely based of results, we knew this season was going to be challenging and when we look across the team results throughout the year, we’ve shown significant improvement in a lot of areas which gives us a positive base to build on for next year.
I would like to say thank you to the many parents who have volunteered their time helping throughout the season, I would also like to give a special shout out to all of the college staff and several team coaches who have helped out throughout the season with bus supervision. This requires a substantial amount of extra commitment and without them, students wouldn’t have been able to get to training weekly throughout the season – so a massive thank you to all of you.
Good luck to all coaches and players in your final Football matches of the 2024 season.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Football Coordinator
With Round 7 upon us, we wonder where the last six weeks have gone. Many teams are just getting their combinations clicking and the boys are responding to new positions or different voices and then it’s over. It has been really pleasing to see how our boys have been improving over the course of the season and seeing how they respond to challenges and lift each other up when their backs are against a wall. Last Saturday against Iona College, our players saw many of those challenges. I believe our boys went out to play football and play for each other. They did not indulge in niggling the opposition nor did they go into matches with any intent of foul play. There comes a point where, you can only take so much and then the switch is flicked and this did happen. This does not reflect what our Colleges are trying to promote in our boys. They are good boys; they look out for each other and they will always be there to support each other.
We came away with 11 wins on Saturday and 15 losses. The aggregate games were shared 6-6, which is a win for Villa. Iona was expected to win most of them but our players were up to the challenge and performed well getting home in some tight contests. The 4ths, 10A, 10B, 9A, 9B and 8A games were well played and these sides really gave it to Iona.
With the one round to go, Villa has already secured the 10A, 10B, 8A and 6C premierships. Congratulations to those players and coaches. Our seconds, fourths, 9C, 8B and 6B teams should all finish second, depending on how other results go this weekend.
Good luck to all players and coaches. Enjoy the last game and be there to support your mates in other teams. For those playing at Villanova Park, please stay around and support the 1st XV as they conclude the season and send off the Year 12’s, who play their last match for the College.
NO DOG policy. A reminder to families that Villanova Park is private property and a dog free zone. Please leave your dog at home.
Mr Chris Everding, Rugby Coordinator
Villanova will be entering teams into the Zone competition in Term four this year and we would like to encourage ALL our cricketers to think about playing for the College rather than other clubs. The boys in Year 6 to Open will be playing divisional cricket in the BEARS comp and we want to try and keep our A/B and C/D players together to develop their cricket and to get a core group of players to stay together to help improve and raise the standard of cricket at Villanova. We didn’t perform as well as we would have liked this year in the AIC competition, and the success of AFL has begun depleting our cricket numbers. Villanova is hoping to get these boys back and to try and keep our AIC teams together for the Term 4 competition, so we can be better prepared for the 2025 cricket season. Please keep this in mind and have a chat to other families who might think of playing for another club.
Refer to the Locker Room Overview page for the Term 2 Training Schedule, which includes the S&C schedule. Students attending LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) sessions do not need to register prior to attending. Just arrive with your towel and water bottle.
Please be advised of the changing schedule for S&C in Week 9, Term 2. See link below.
As we approach the end of the season, we want to extend our heartfelt best wishes to all the soccer and rugby union teams preparing for their final matches. It’s been an incredible journey watching our athletes give their all, demonstrating resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to excellence across all the grades.
No matter the outcomes, we are immensely proud of each and every one of you. For the First teams, but in general anyone who attended the S&C and LTAD sessions across the term, your hard work in the gym and on the field, are a testament to your character and dedication to your sport. Let’s finish strongly, support each other, and celebrate the journey we’ve shared this season.
During the holidays, we will give everyone a rest for the first two weeks, but the gym will be open to anyone on the last week on the following dates:
The Term 3 S&C schedule will be available soon.

Speed & Agility Training – Year 5-8 students
Speed & Agility is crucial to most sports. Future Athletics’ Speed & Agility programme is designed to teach students these skills to form a strong base for their chosen sport.
Regardless of the sport, the skills learnt through our Speed & Agility programme will help young athletes and set them up for the future. Sprinting technique, coordination, plyometrics, flexibility, change of direction training and core exercises are some of the skills taught in the sessions. These sessions are conducted in a fun and playful environment focusing on the child and helping them enjoy sports.
This programme is available to all students in Years 5-8. The Term 3 programme will run on Friday mornings, from 7-8am on Whinstanes. The programme runs for 8 weeks from Friday 19 July to 6 Sep.
Registration is made through payment on Parent Lounge. The event is now active.

Giving Day 2024
Today Thursday 6 June, from 8am to 8pm, we are calling on all families and Villanova College Old Boys to support our Giving Day. This is more than just a fundraiser; it’s an opportunity for us to come together and invest in the future of our students and community. Every donation, big or small, will help us build a new Sports & STEM Precinct at Villanova College. This exciting development, located at the corner of Seventh and Main Avenue, will provide our students with state-of-the-art facilities to excel in both athletics and academics. Your contribution is not only tax-deductible but also plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Villanova College and the experiences that our students will carry with them after they graduate.
