Director of Sport Address
Round 1 has arrived, with our Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis teams preparing to face St Laurence’s College this weekend.
There is always something extra in a Villa – Lauries round. The rivalry brings plenty of excitement; however, our responsibility remains the same: to compete with determination, support one another and represent Villanova College with humility and pride.
Our GREATS focus throughout Trimester 3 is Respect.
Respect is demonstrated through the way we encourage and hold our teammates accountable, listen and respond to our coaches, communicate with opponents and officials, and represent Villanova in the Green and Gold.
Last weekend’s trial fixtures against St Patrick’s College gave our students and coaches an important opportunity to test combinations, build confidence and identify areas for further improvement.
Thank you to every student who approached the trials with enthusiasm and commitment, as well as the coaches, staff and families who supported a very busy week of training and fixtures.
Congratulations also to all students who competed in Sunday’s Villanova Tennis Championships. The quality of tennis and sportsmanship throughout the day was excellent. In particular, congratulations to Junior School Champion Xavier A. and Middle School Champion Luka D. on their outstanding performances.
Our golfers represented the College with distinction at Monday’s AIC Golf Championships. Villanova finished third in the Team Gross Championship, missing second place by only one stroke, and placed fifth in the Team Nett Championship. Congratulations also to Harvey A., who won the Longest Drive competition.
At Friday’s College Assembly, we will introduce and recognise our First V Basketball, First XIII Rugby League and First IV Tennis teams. This will be a special opportunity for the College community to hear from our captains, acknowledge the players and coaches, and build momentum ahead of the opening round.
For students awaiting team selections, remember that selection is never based on ability alone. Attendance, effort, attitude, coachability and commitment to your teammates all matter.
Being selected this week does not guarantee selection next week, while missing out on Round 1 does not close the door. Keep training, keep listening and continue giving your coaches a reason to notice your improvement.
This weekend, compete hard, respect the officials and look after your teammates. Celebrate the good moments together and respond positively when the contest becomes difficult.
The result matters, but so does the way we represent our College before, during and after each fixture.
Thank you to our coordinators, coaches, officials, medical staff, venue managers and volunteers for everything they have done to prepare for Round 1. Thank you also to our families for supporting transport arrangements, uniforms, training commitments and the many early starts that come with AIC Sport.
Please continue to check The Locker Room and the Villanova College App for team lists, fixtures, venue information and any late changes.
Best wishes to every student representing Villanova against St Laurence’s College this weekend. Enjoy the opportunity, compete with confidence and play your part for Villa.
Go Villa! 💚💛

Basketball
The opening week of the AIC Basketball season has been a busy and exciting one, with trial games taking place against Iona College and St Patrick’s College. These matches provided our coaches with a valuable opportunity to finalise selections and assess players in game conditions ahead of the season.
Congratulations to all the boys who trialed this year. With more than 380 students earning a place in a Villanova team, it is fantastic to see the continued growth and enthusiasm for basketball across the College. Team selections are never easy, and we thank all students for the positive attitude, effort and sportsmanship they displayed throughout the trial process.
This week marks the beginning of the AIC competition as we take on St Laurence’s College. We encourage all players to represent Villanova with pride by competing hard, supporting their teammates and demonstrating the GREATS values both on and off the court. Student who have not yet collect their basketball singlets show do so from the uniform shop.
A reminder that all training sessions are compulsory. If you are unable to attend training or a game, please notify your coach as soon as possible using the contact details available on the MyVilla Basketball page. All fixtures, training schedules, team lists and important season updates can also be found on the MyVilla Basketball page, so please check it regularly to stay informed.
We wish all our teams the very best for Round 1.
Ms Sharon Casey , Basketball Coordinator
Golf
Villanova at the 2026 AIC Golf Championships
The Villanova squad, captained by Oliver Wright, arrived at the Keperra Golf Club for the 2026 AIC Golf Championships with clubs polished, hopes high, and a firm commitment to bringing home the coveted Balharry Shield that has evaded our grasp in recent years. Not only did the team have to battle the opposing schools, but also the somewhat inclement weather, with winds gusting sporadically throughout the morning. In the Team Gross Championship, Villanova finished a very respectable 3rd place with a total of 327, securing a podium finish behind only Iona (317) and St Edmund’s (326). In the Team Nett Championship (Balharry Shield), Villanova recorded 318, finishing 5th overall behind eventual winners Marist College Ashgrove (288).
Tate Ramsay produced the best score for the team with a respectable gross score of 77 (nett 75). Oliver Wright contributed a gross score of 79 (nett 79), Joseph Unnasch recorded a gross score of 83 (nett 82), Archie Goad chipped in with a gross score of 88 (nett 82) and Harvey Anderson posted a gross score of 90 (nett 85). However, his scorecard only tells part of the story. Harvey claimed the Longest Drive prize on the 10th hole with a monster drive of well over 300 metres. Witnesses reported that the ball travelled so far that NASA was on the phone to him later in the day.
The depth of our squad continues to develop and improve with all of our players edging towards being scratch markers. This certainly holds us in good stead for 2027 and beyond. In summary, a podium finish, a longest-drive champion, and plenty of quality golf made for a successful day out for Villa. Congratulations to Tate, Oliver, Joseph, Archie, and Harvey on representing Villanova with distinction.
Mr Matt Conlan, Golf Co-ordinator
Rugby League
Villanova Rugby League has enjoyed a positive start to the season following a successful holiday development camp and trial round.
The holiday camp provided students with a valuable opportunity to develop their core Rugby League skills, work with experienced coaches and prepare for the upcoming AIC season. Thank you to the North Queensland Cowboys staff, Villanova coaches and students who contributed to making the camp such a worthwhile experience.
Our trial matches also provided coaches with an opportunity to finalise team selections, assess combinations and identify areas for improvement before the beginning of the competitive season. Congratulations to all students on the effort, enthusiasm and sportsmanship they displayed throughout the trial round.
A reminder that the Wednesday Skills Session continues this week from 3:15 pm to 4:00 pm at Little Langlands. These sessions focus on key areas such as wrestling and contact, kicking, catching and general skill development. All Villanova Rugby League students are encouraged to attend and take advantage of the opportunity to work with our specialist coaches.
We now look forward to Round 1 against St Laurence’s College, with all matches being played away at St Laurence’s home fields. Students are reminded to check the Locker Room for team lists, game times, venue information and any final updates.
Best of luck to all players and coaches for the opening round. We look forward to seeing our teams represent Villanova College with pride, effort and sportsmanship.
Mr Wian Joubert, Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis
Week 1 of Term 3 saw our Villanova tennis teams compete strongly in the final week of internal trials, as well as take on St Patrick’s College in our annual trial match on Saturday. We also had our extended First IV squad travel to Iona College on Tuesday afternoon for a series of friendly matches. Congratulations to all the boys who competed throughout the week. You played with determination, showed great sportsmanship, and most importantly, enjoyed yourselves.
Sunday saw the staging of our annual Villanova Tennis Championships. Despite some minor weather concerns, the event was a tremendous success. Congratulations to our Junior School Champion, Xavier Arnold, and our Middle School Champion, Luka Dickie. A special thank you to the coaches who gave up their time to support and assist throughout the championships.
This week, we take on our geographical rivals, St Laurence’s College. While we always strive for success on the court, I encourage all players to remember the GREATS values that underpin our program. Competing with respect, humility and integrity is just as important as the result itself.
A friendly reminder that all training sessions are compulsory. If you are unable to attend, please notify your coach via the email address listed on MyVilla. We look forward to another great week of tennis. 🎾

Track and Field
Welcome to another exciting year of Villanova Track and Field. In 2026, our focus is on creating an environment where every athlete can improve, challenge themselves, and contribute to a strong team culture built on commitment, resilience, and continual growth.
Our goal is simple: help every student become the best athlete they can be, regardless of their starting point. Through quality coaching, purposeful training, performance tracking, and clear individual goals, we aim to develop athletes who embrace hard work and strive for consistent improvement throughout the season.
A key development for 2026 is our emerging partnership with UQ Athletics, which will provide new opportunities for athlete development, exposure to high-performance training environments, and pathways for students seeking to extend their involvement in athletics beyond school. Together, we look forward to building a program that promotes participation, celebrates achievement, and inspires every Villanova athlete to reach their potential both on and off the track.
For future news updates pertaining to track and field, please visit the track and field page in the Locker Room on MyVilla.

Villanova First XVIII AFL Captain Will W. Earns Queensland and Brisbane Lions Academy Honours
Congratulations to Will W., a Year 12 Alypius student and Captain of the Villanova First XVIII AFL team, on his continued success in Australian Football.
Will was recently selected to represent Queensland in the AFL Under 17 Futures team, travelling to Melbourne to compete against Victoria Country.
The match provided an important opportunity for players to showcase their ability, with 44 of the leading Under 17 players from across Australia to be selected for the AFL Futures match on AFL Grand Final Day at the MCG.
Will has also continued his involvement in the Brisbane Lions Academy, earning selection in its Level 4 Academy Program as one of only 13 invited players.
This is an outstanding achievement, particularly as Will is an underage member of the squad.
The College is incredibly proud of Will’s dedication, commitment and achievements. We look forward to following the next stage of his football journey.
