DIRECTOR OF SPORT ADDRESS
Following a strong opening to Trimester 3, our Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis teams now turn their attention to Round 3 against Padua College.
Round 1 delivered some excellent results across the College. Our Basketball teams recorded 26 wins from 29 matches, including nine wins from 12 Aggregate fixtures. Rugby League secured nine wins from 14 matches, with the First XIII producing a strong 20–12 victory over SEC. Our Tennis teams recorded 10 wins from 13 matches, including a commanding 7–1 victory by the First IV.
While these results provide plenty to celebrate, they also give every team an opportunity to identify where further improvement is required.
Our GREATS focus this week is Accountability.
Accountability means arriving prepared, attending training consistently and completing the role your team needs from you. It is demonstrated when students communicate appropriately, listen to feedback, take responsibility for their decisions and maintain high standards even when nobody is watching.
It also means being honest about our performances. When we play well, we should recognise the preparation and teamwork that made it possible. When we fall short, we should accept the result, learn from it and respond positively at the next opportunity.
Being accountable is not about assigning blame. It is about owning what we can control and following through on our commitments to our teammates, coaches and College.
Tuesday’s College Assembly provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate students who have demonstrated these qualities. We recognised our Trimester 2 AIC Premiership teams, AIC Cross Country placegetters, GREATS recipients and Confraternity Rugby League representatives.
Congratulations to our Chess Intermediate B, Football 6B and 6C, and Rugby Union 6A Premiership teams. Congratulations also to Taj G., who was presented with the inaugural Justin Kerr Memorial Shield in recognition of the spirit, character and integrity he demonstrated throughout the Rugby League program.
Thank you to our captains and students who contributed to the Assembly, as well as every coach and staff member who supported these achievements.
This weekend, all Rugby League teams will host Padua at Villa Park. Across Basketball, Years 5 and 7 to 9 will travel, while Years 6 and 10 to Opens will host. In Tennis, Years 5 to 8 will travel, while Years 9 to Opens will host.
Regardless of your team, venue or role, the expectations remain consistent: arrive prepared, compete with determination, respect the officials and support your teammates. When the contest becomes difficult, remain composed and accountable for your response.
A reminder that regular sports training will not proceed during Ekka Week. Monday and Tuesday gym sessions will proceed as scheduled, while any selected Firsts team arrangements will be communicated directly by the relevant coaches. We also look forward to the Interhouse Track and Field Carnival at Villa Park on Thursday, August 13.
Thank you to Ms Sharon Casey, Mr Wian Joubert, Mr Angus Sullivan and Mr Andrew Lund for their leadership and coordination of our students and coaches. Thank you also to our coaches, officials, medical staff, venue managers, volunteers and families for the significant contribution each of you continues to make.
Please check The Locker Room and the Villanova College App for team lists, fixtures, venue information and any late changes.
Best wishes to every student representing Villanova against Padua College this weekend. Be prepared, take responsibility for your role and play your part for Villa.
Go Villa! 💚💛
Mr Matthew Hannan
Director of Sport

Rugby League
Villanova Rugby League has enjoyed an excellent start to the season against St Laurence’s and St Edmund’s Colleges. The First XIII, Second XIII, 6A, 6B and 5B Green teams have all opened the season with consecutive victories.
There have been several standout performances, including dominant wins by the 8B team, 40–6, and the 6B team, 36–0. The opening rounds have also produced some thrilling finishes, with the First XIII securing a 24–22 victory, while the 10A and 5B Green teams recorded narrow wins in Round 2.
Players are encouraged to attend the additional Wednesday afternoon development sessions led by specialist coaches Joe Tomane and Rory Ferguson. These sessions provide focused coaching in kicking, catching, wrestling and contact skills, supporting the continued development of players across the program.
Mr Wian Joubert
Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis
The opening two weeks of the AIC Tennis season have set the stage for an exciting year ahead, with players displaying strong commitment, sportsmanship, and determination across all grades. After a productive pre-season, teams have hit the courts eager to put their training into action, and the early rounds have already produced some competitive matches and encouraging performances.
Throughout the first two weeks, players have shown excellent teamwork and resilience, with many matches coming down to closely contested sets and tiebreakers. It has been fantastic to see new players embracing the challenge of AIC competition while experienced team members have led by example both on and off the court.
Our focus remains on continual improvement, supporting teammates, and representing the college with pride. As the season progresses, there will be plenty of opportunities for players to build confidence, develop their skills, and contribute to team success.
We encourage all members of the college community to support our tennis teams throughout the season. Whether you attend matches, celebrate results, or cheer from afar, your support plays an important role in creating a positive and successful team environment. Go VNC Tennis! 🎾
Mr Angus Sullivan
Tennis Coordinator
Track and Field
The 2026 Track & Field season is off to an outstanding start, with athletes demonstrating excellent commitment and improvement across all event groups. A highlight of the pre-season has been the addition of Monday trainings at UQ, which has provided valuable training opportunities for our athletes. The program has been a tremendous success, with students benefiting from access to quality facilities, coaching expertise, and a high-performance training environment.
It has been particularly pleasing to see athletes improving across the board, with strong attendance at training and encouraging performances in early season testing and preparation sessions. The continued effort and enthusiasm shown by our students provides a strong foundation for the season ahead.
We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new coaching staff for 2026:
We are excited to have such an experienced and passionate group of coaches supporting our students this season.

Two Villanovans ace the same hole
Wednesday, June 24 proved to be an extraordinary day at The Brisbane Golf Club.
Villanova Old Boy and former Wallabies captain Andrew Slack recorded his first hole-in-one on the 163 metre fourth hole at 70 years of age. Only a few hours later, current Year 7 student Joseph U. played the same hole and achieved his first hole-in-one at just 12 years of age.
Two Villanovans, two first hole-in-ones and the same hole on the same day – a remarkable achievement and a wonderful Villa connection.
Congratulations, Andrew and Joseph!
