Director of Sport Address
AIC Trimester 2 sport continues this week, with Chess, Football and Rugby Union preparing for Round 7 fixtures against St Patrick’s College. As we move into the final stages of the season, I would like to thank our students, families, coaches, staff and support staff for their continued energy, flexibility and commitment across Villa Sport.
Round 6 against Marist College Ashgrove provided another important opportunity for our students to compete, learn and represent the College with pride. Across Chess, Football and Rugby Union, there were strong individual and team moments, along with continued examples of effort, resilience and commitment against quality opposition.
This week, our G.R.E.A.T.S. focus is Service. Service in Villa Sport is shown through team-first actions – helping a teammate, thanking a coach, respecting officials, preparing properly and contributing positively whether selected, substituted, injured or supporting from the sideline. These small actions matter and help build the culture we want across every sport.
As we enter the final round of Trimester 2 sport, a clear reminder is needed regarding behaviour and discipline. Any red card issued in Football or Rugby Union may result in suspension from future fixtures, including suspensions carrying into subsequent sport seasons where appropriate. We want our students to compete with effort and courage; however, this must always be done with self-control and respect for opponents, officials, teammates and the College.
This fortnight also marks the beginning of important Trimester 3 preparations. Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis trials commence next week and I would like to thank our Trimester 3 coordinators and coaches for the work already taking place behind the scenes. A significant amount of planning happens before students arrive at a trial and we are grateful for the time, care and organisation being invested into these programs.
Families are encouraged to regularly check The Locker Room main page, as well as the relevant sport-specific pages, for trial information, training details, team selection updates and any changes to arrangements. Weekly draws, training schedules, team lists and key sport updates will continue to be shared via The Locker Room, with the Villanova College App used for urgent updates, cancellations and same-day changes.
Looking ahead, Week 8 fixtures will be played against St Patrick’s College on Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13, including Firsts matches hosted by St Patrick’s College. In Week 9, training and trials commence for Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis. Selected students will then travel to Sydney for the St Augustine’s Tour from Monday, June 22 to Wednesday, June 24, before selected students compete at the Rugby League Confraternity Carnival at Marist College Ashgrove from Sunday, June 28 to Saturday, July 4.
Families are also asked to note that the first Year 10 Basketball trial will take place on Tuesday, Week 1 of Term 3, which is the same day as the Iona A/B trial fixture. Students will be advised of any relevant details at that Tuesday morning training. A Rugby League Camp is planned for Saturday, July 11 and a Basketball Camp is also being planned. Further details for both camps will be shared in the days ahead; however, coaches and players are strongly encouraged to attend these opportunities where possible.

No Dog Policy
A reminder that there is a NO DOG policy at all AIC sporting fixtures. Venue coordinators at and adjacent to Villa Park have reported that some pet owners are ignoring the gate signage. Pet owners who ignore the signs will be asked to remove their pets immediately.

Chess
Villanova Chess has continued to perform strongly across the past fortnight. In Round 5, the First IV went down 11-5 against an undefeated St Peter’s College side, while Intermediate B continued their excellent start to the season by winning their first five matches. Across the afternoon, Villanova recorded four wins and two draws from 10 fixtures.
In Round 6 against Marist College Ashgrove, the First IV responded strongly with an impressive 10-6 win. Intermediate B also continued their undefeated run, moving to six wins from six matches. Across Friday afternoon, Villanova won four matches and drew four from nine fixtures.
This Friday, Chess fixtures will continue against St Patrick’s College. Students are reminded to arrive in the correct uniform, represent the College with pride and maintain the high standards of respect, focus and sportsmanship expected of Villa Sport.

I would like to acknowledge and thank members of Villanova’s ‘Running Wildcats’, Squad for the perseverance and enthusiasm they brought to the Cross Country program again this year. The numbers of runners that continues to grow is a direct reflection of the passion the coaches have for running and their desire to see young men develop into better versions of themselves. It was a challenging season with all of the warm-up races cancelled due to the ongoing poor weather.

In appreciation we recognise the positive intent and efforts of coaches and mentors including Jane Weule, Jordan Roache (’01), Gerard Gannon (’79), Bailey Horvath (’25) and Dylan Fryga (’25). I would like to acknowledge the gifts shared with the squad by the staff which complemented and enhanced Villa’s Cross Country program.
Villanova gained a credible equal 6th place at the AIC Championships in Secondary and equal 5th in Primary. This result was not what we have achieved for the last few years, but is a fair reflection of the performance of the Running Wildcats on AIC Championship Day.

Villanova Football has experienced a mixed but encouraging fortnight. In Round 5, the program recorded 10 wins and six draws from 26 matches against St Peter’s College, including six wins and one draw from 11 Aggregate matches. The First XI also recorded a strong 2-0 win in wet conditions.
In Round 6 against Marist College Ashgrove, Villanova recorded five wins and three draws from 27 matches. The 6B and 6C teams continue to enjoy strong seasons and remain undefeated, while the First XI competed well against a strong MCA side before going down 2-0 after being level at halftime.
This weekend, Football fixtures will be played against St Patrick’s College. With the season moving into its final rounds, all students are reminded of the importance of representing Villanova College with pride, discipline and respect. Correct uniform presentation is expected at all fixtures and behaviour standards must remain high on and off the field.
Students are reminded that any red card issued in Football may result in suspension from future fixtures, including suspension carrying into subsequent sport seasons where appropriate. We ask all players to compete hard, support their teammates and uphold the standards expected of Villa Sport.

Villanova Rugby Union has produced some strong performances across the past fortnight. In Round 5, the program recorded 10 wins from 15 matches against St Peter’s College, including three wins from three Aggregate matches. The Seconds, Thirds, 10B and 6A remained undefeated, while the First XV recorded an excellent 45-7 win over St Peter’s earlier in the week.
In Round 6 against Marist College Ashgrove, Villanova recorded five wins from 21 matches. The 6A team remains undefeated and continues to show great consistency. The First XV showed strong moments in the first half against a very strong MCA side, trailing 14-5 at halftime before eventually being defeated 40-5. There were a lot of close scores as games closed in on halftime but Ashgrove proved too strong and ran away with some matches.
This weekend, Rugby Union fixtures will be played against St Patrick’s College. As we enter the final part of the season, all students are reminded to represent Villanova College with pride, discipline and respect. Correct uniform presentation is expected at all fixtures and behaviour standards must remain high before, during and after games. After last Saturday, the players have worked hard at training and have reset themselves to put in a good showing to finish off the season. Good luck to all the rugby teams playing at Shorncliffe and to the junior teams playing away at different venues. In particular, we’d like to wish all of the seniors playing on Saturday, the best of luck as they represent Villanova for the last time in rugby union.

The Villanova Basketball Program will commence trials for the 2026/27 season next week. Trials will be held from Tuesday to Friday and will continue in Week 1 of Term 3. All trials will be conducted at Villanova College and will be run by year level.
Students attending trials are required to wear either their Villanova sports uniform or Villanova College basketball attire. Appropriate basketball footwear should also be worn.
Trials
Students should attend all trial sessions scheduled for their year level wherever possible. Team selections will be based on performances across the trial period.
Year 5
Team selections are based on performances observed throughout the trial process. All students are provided with the same opportunity to qualify for a team, with selections made by coaching staff and supported by the College.

Please note that due to limited court availability in Week 9 of Term 2, there are limited opportunities to conduct some trials before the holidays. As a result, the first Year 10 Basketball trial will take place on Tuesday, Week 1 of Term 3, which is the same day as the Iona A/B trial. Boys will be advised of any relevant details at that Tuesday morning training.
Please note that team selections are reviewed throughout the season. Should movement between teams occur, coaches will communicate directly with both the student and their parents.

Trial Details
The first couple of weeks of training will be used as trial sessions to assist with team selections. Students will be allocated a number, which coaches will use throughout the trial period to help identify players and select teams.
A list of student names and allocated numbers will be provided before trials begin.

3:45 – 5:15 Tuesday and Thursday
Training will be held at Villa Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Training will be held at Little Langlands.
Year 5 students will train in the mornings and Year 6 students will train in the afternoons.

Term 2 Speed & Agility Program
Registrations are now open via Parent Lounge – a fantastic chance for students to sharpen their skills and build confidence! Sessions kicked off on Thursday of Week 2 (30 April).

• Open to all students in Years 5–8
• Cost: $180 for 8 sessions delivered by elite-level coaches
• Day: THURSDAY mornings ONLY
• Time: 7:00am to 8:00am
• Venue: Whinstanes Oval

This is a great opportunity to build speed, coordination and confidence in a dynamic and supportive setting.

Regional Sport
In 2026, there have been some updates made to the School Sport Representative pathway. Villanova College now joins the Central Sharks district (former Composite & Lytton) for 10-19 Years Sport.

Met East U12 AFL State Carnival
Congratulations to the seven Villanova College students who represented Met East at the U12 AFL State Carnival in Cairns.
Met East had a strong carnival, finishing the qualifying rounds as the second seed before claiming the bronze medal with a win over Met North in the 3 v 4 playoff final.
A special congratulations to Cash C. and Zac G. who were selected in the Queensland U12 AFL team following the carnival. Cash also captained the Met East team, with Zac named Vice Captain.
