Director of Sport Address
Villa Sport continues to build strong momentum through Trimester 2, with another positive weekend across Chess, Football, Rugby Union and Cross Country.
In Chess, our Firsts and Intermediate B teams have now won their first four matches, while Villanova recorded three wins from 10 matches on Friday afternoon. Our players continue to show patience, focus and respect as they represent the College each week.
Our Cross Country squad is preparing for an important lead-up meet at Curlew Park this Wednesday, the same venue as the upcoming AIC Cross Country Championships. This is an important opportunity for students to test themselves, gather times and continue building consistency ahead of next week’s Championship event.
Football recorded 10 wins and six draws from 26 matches, with six wins and a draw from 11 Aggregate fixtures. Congratulations to the three Year 6 teams, 5A and 9A, who remain undefeated. The First XI also has a big week ahead, with fixtures against Iona College on Thursday and St Peter’s Lutheran College on Saturday as part of Reconciliation Round.
Rugby Union enjoyed another strong round, recording nine wins and two draws from 23 matches. All Opens teams recorded wins, while the Seconds, Thirds and Fourths remain undefeated, along with the 10B, 6A and 6B teams. A special congratulations to the First XV, who retained the Tiger Cup in a thrilling 33-31 win.
This week also includes the Opens Cross Country Team announcement, the Sports Lunch and Reconciliation Round across Chess, Football and Rugby Union. Thank you to all staff, coaches, students and families who continue to support these important opportunities for connection, reflection and pride in the Green and Gold.
Students are invited to take part in the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) program running in the gym every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. This free program is open to all students, regardless of experience or ability level and focuses on building well-rounded physical skills such as strength, coordination, agility and overall fitness. It’s a great opportunity to stay active, develop confidence and improve your holistic physical ability in a supportive and inclusive environment.
As we move through a significant fortnight of Villa Sport, I encourage all students to keep showing up with effort, humility and strong team-first habits. These are the small actions that build momentum, strengthen culture and make Villa Sport something special.
Go Villa! 💚💛
Mr Matthew Hannan, Director of Sport

Trimester 2 Sports
Football
The football season has reached the halfway point, with plenty of positive results and continued improvement across the program. After four rounds, several teams are starting to build strong momentum, with several important wins recorded in the most recent round against Iona.
Week 4 was a strong round for the College, with wins recorded by the Second XI, Third XI, Fifth XI, 10B, 9A, 7A, 7B, 6A, 6B and 6C.
Standout results included the Second XI winning 5–1, the Third XI winning 4–0, the Fifth XI winning 7–1, and 6C producing an excellent 6–2 victory.
A special mention goes to the teams who remain undefeated so far this season: 9A, 6A, 6B, 6C and 5A. In particular, 9A and 6A have been outstanding, both winning all four of their games so far.
Overall, there has been strong progress across the program, with teams continuing to improve each week. Well done to all players and coaches on a positive start to the season.
Mr Wian Joubert, Football Coordinator
Rugby Union
The First XV have had a busy week with the round three clash against Iona at Iona, resulting in a narrow 33-31 victory. The boys took control early in the match but as is usually the case in these big games, Iona came back and almost stole a victory. There was a quick turn around with the round four clash against St. Peter’s College played on Tuesday afternoon at Easts rugby club. This fixture is moved from the Saturday due to the U18 schoolboys championships on over the next three days.
The game at Easts was dominated by Villanova with slick passing and strong running in the middle by the backs, a strong scrum and great defence by the forwards. The final score of 45-7 in favour of Villanova was a reflection on the game. The boys now have a 10 day break before taking on powerhouse Ashgrove on the 6th June for what could be their opportunity to take out the 1sts XV premiership. It’s been 16 years since the 2010 team held the premiership trophy high and we need to get a big contingent of Villanova supporters out to Marist to back the boys.
Iona, is always a tough round and our younger teams were certainly challenged by bigger opposition. The Opens flew the flag again, winning all four games and have put themselves in a strong position to take out premierships as they all remain undefeated.
We urge all families to continue to support Villanova rugby by volunteering your time at the canteen each week, while your son’s warm up and also by staying at the venue to allow them to sit on the line to support their mates and to be ready in case they are called upon to run on for the next team. Most teams carry the 15 players and rely on the team below them to supply the bench. There have been some cases where teams are left with no reserves because boys have just gone home. If you son happens to be listed in two teams, he will play in the lower ranked side and then sit on the bench for the next game. Coaches may ask boys at training to stay behind and bench for them. If players want the opportunity to play at a higher level, then they should stay and show they are keen.
This Saturday is the last home fixture for our Opens, Year 10 and Year 9 boys. Please get out there and show your support.
Mr Chris Everding , Rugby Union Coordinator

Met East State Title and Queensland Schools Selection Congratulations
Congratulations to Oli T. and Denzel N. on a fantastic week representing Met East Football at the recent State Titles.

Both boys played important roles across the tournament, contributing to a strong Met East campaign built on effort, discipline and defensive resilience. The team progressed through a challenging week of football before claiming the State Title in a tense final against Met North, with the match finishing 0-0 before Met East secured victory on penalties.
This is a wonderful achievement for the full Met East squad and coaching staff. To have both Oli and Denzel also selected in the Queensland Schools team ahead of the National Titles in July is a very proud moment for the boys, their families and our Villanova College community.
Well done Oli and Denzel. We look forward to following your continued journey and wish you both all the best at the National Titles.
