Chess…… A Trying Round of Trials!
Following on from the first trial round against St Laurence’s in Term 1, last Friday saw the second trial round for AIC Chess, and it was certainly a trial for us!
With a few of our key players out with illness and social commitments, Team Villa was lacking a little in strength. However, as we often see, low results in trials often can mean sensational results in the rounds! Our star player last Friday was Jack Power, Year 12 who won both of his matches in style!
Team Villa is very keen to play against Marist College this week, so we are really looking forward to a wonderful Friday afternoon over on the northside. The bus will leave Villanova at 3:15 pm and the return bus is booked to leave Marist College at 5:30pm, arriving back at Villanova by approximately 6:00 pm. All students will need to be collected promptly from the front of the College (Sixth Avenue).
Team lists will be published on the Locker room by Thursday, but I am sure the team managers will communicate this before then. If your son is unable to play on Friday, please contact your team manager by Thursday, so that we can arrange a replacement.
We would remind all chess players to register at www.chess.com, where practice, game hints and tips can only lead to greater skill and game success.
All players must attend all training sessions.

Dedication to training, effort and positive conduct are the characteristics of the students currently training with the cross-country squad. Although, the level of participation has been good further runners in the under 15 and 16 age groups would benefit the squad. Thus, I challenge boys in those age groups, especially students fit from playing other sports to speak to either myself or Mr Roache about how you could get involved.
The level of enthusiasm displayed in the running training has been infectious for the whole squad. The following students have really impressed with their effort, intent, and commitment to training Thus far in the season. Developing a great love for running has caused their performances to improve significantly, and this is a real inspiration to the students around them.
Lytton District Cross Country
The boys mentioned above will represent the College at the Lytton trials next Tuesday at Villanova Park. All boys have received a note and should be at Villanova Park by 8.00am and check in with Mrs Weule, ready for a course orientation at 8.30am. Boys are to wear the Villanova running singlet and shorts. Runners are to make their own way to and from Villa Park.
Mr Brian Pascoe, Cross-Country Coordinator
Last Saturday saw us up against Iona College in our last round of trials before the season starts. This was a great opportunity for all Football coaches and students to work on their final preparations for the season ahead. As I walked around the matches at Villanova Park, it was great to see so much activity and excitement across the day. The Football program has had a lot of new additions to the program and as the Football Coordinator, I feel extremely confident that the program is ready for the season ahead and more importantly – moving forward in the right direction.
I would like to thank our Football Technical Director Mr Hudson Rogers and our Junior Football Coordinator Mrs Maria Mascadri for all their hard work and dedication across the last six weeks and during the trial process. They have been able to implement a lot of new ideas which will only see our Football program continue to grow. Thank you also to all the team coaches and managers in coordinating the trials and for preparing your teams in readiness for the Round 1 AIC season.
Can I please remind all students and parents that the correct Football uniform must be worn on game days for every round. We want to make sure that all Villanova teams that represent the college look professional on match days and I kindly ask for all students to make sure that they have this ready to go before the upcoming Round 1 matches.
Best of luck to all coaches and students in your Round 1 matches against Ashgrove.

Villanova Park will play host to Marist College Ashgrove for Round 1 in the AIC Rugby Competition for our younger boys this Saturday. Ashgrove is always a tough round, and we are hoping that the preparation we have put into our teams leading into Round 1, will have them well prepared and ready for the challenge this Saturday.
It will be a tough assignment for our players this weekend, but the boys are keen to get out there and kick off the season proper. Our trials last Saturday were tough, and the coaches have been making the necessary adjustments and will put the final pieces together. Team changes can be made weekly, and selections are not just based on player performance.
As teams are announced this week, the reality is, some boys will be disappointed with their grading. The best way to deal with this matter is to show resilience and to work even harder at training and during the game each week to prove to your coach that you are capable to move up in the gradings. The coaches have been asked to monitor all players and change teams weekly based on player performance, attendance and attitude. A player’s position in a team is not guaranteed and we strongly encourage our coaches to reward those who show improvement.
When dealing with teenage boys during a rugby season where things can get heated, we can expect emotions and tempers to flare on occasions. As a result, the boys under our care can and do get things wrong and they do make poor decisions and judgements from time to time. Our job as educators (whether that be parents, teachers or coaches) is to address these matters with our sons/students/players and lead them to be better men in the future and show them how to deal with issues appropriately.
The use of inappropriate language, the silly pushing, shoving, and fighting on field, incidents where our spectators are seen to incite poor behaviour from the players on field will not be tolerated and the College has and will continue to enforce appropriate expectations/standards and we will teach the boys what good behavior looks like.
Any RED cards given to players will result in an automatic one-week suspension from playing. This is supported by all AIC Colleges across the association. If the College deems the behaviour to be more serious, then a meeting will be held with the player, College Principal and Director of Sport to discuss the length of the ban.
Sport provides another platform where teaching and learning occurs, these situations do not simply exist in the classrooms alone.
Boys are to be mindful of their attitude to other players and their coaches at training and during matches. Negative comments towards teammates may result in players being removed from a team and placed somewhere else. It is important, regardless of ability levels that we respect all players and remember that we are all on the same team. Your behaviour is also on display for everyone to see or hear and some boys may be taken from the field if they are not able to control their emotions. The key thing we look for in the boys is not how they react but how they respond, and these issues will be addressed by our coaches.
Good luck to the boys playing at Villanova Park and also to our older students playing at Marist College Ashgrove.
