Welcome to another big week at Villanova College. It certainly has been another great week of acknowledging the many accomplishments not only of our students but also recognising our Old Boys community. On assembly this week we presented our academic award winners for Semester One. It was a wonderful occasion where we could reflect upon the effort that goes into high performing student outcomes.
As we recognised our students from Year 5 through to Year 11 it was both heartening and rewarding to see the number of boys who are achieving at the highest of standards in their academic work. To consistently achieve A grade performances across all subjects is quite outstanding. Such performance doesn’t occur by accident. It takes great effort and commitment by each boy to achieving outstanding performance. It requires regular practise, quality communication, high levels of support and co-operation with teachers, and a set of goals that allow for students to reach those high levels. Each boy should be duly proud of their accomplishment and continue to focus their efforts on their goals.
Further to this on Friday we undergo our “Empower Ed” sessions. This is something at Villanova we are committed to, where each of our teacher mentors across the school, have a one to one conversation with every boy in the College to discuss his dreams, his expectations, his positive actions, and also to plan a pathway to their achievement. It does take time, it does take effort, it takes wonderful support from our great teachers, but it is this commitment shown by our staff that encourages and allows our student to become the best person they could possibly be. We are so indebted to the wonderful work of these teachers.
This week we also have celebrated, for the first time, what we have called our Old Boys ‘Muster’ Week. There have been a large number of events that are on this week that remind us of our history and identity as a Catholic school in the Augustinian tradition. On Monday morning we welcomed back our first Old Boys Mr Paul Liddy and Mr Gerard Loth who were Whinstanes first day students. They were present with us as we considered our 77 years of educating young men. Later in the week some of our younger Old Boys competed in a touch football game against current students – a tradition which actually goes back many, many years. There was a time when the Old Boys 1st XV played the current students 1st XV. Now obviously times have changed as have child safety expectations, so therefore that particular tradition can no longer continue. But the spirit of it can and it did as 15 Old Boys returned to play against the current students on Whinstanes Oval. It was a wonderful game filled with great fun and enjoyable memories. On Friday we start a new tradition as we host our generations breakfast where fathers and grandfathers of Old Boys return, with their current students, to share in a community breakfast. We hope this will become an important annual event.
The celebrations don’t finish with the school week as we host our annual Old Boys dinner on Friday evening. There is also a very special celebration on Saturday evening when we find ourselves with the 50-year-Old Boys who will gather together to share their stories and memories. These seniors of 1975 have been meeting regularly since they left the college and share such a wonderful spirit in the tradition of our great college. Finally, to close our muster this Sunday we have the Vincit Veritas Old Boys lunch which is an important marking and welcoming of our oldest Old Boys back to the college. We also celebrate our deceased Villanovans mass on Sunday morning with community. This is a solemn time to remember those who have been at our College and have passed.
It is often in my column I refer to our performance in sport which is very important to boys and certainly enjoyable to watch but this weekend we also have a wonderful College event occurring our Junior and Middle School boys are putting together a wonderful play.
This weekend also sees the performance of our Junior and Middle School play the Lord of the Flies. This has been a wonderful work of passion by Mr Michael Ware who is directing the play and miss Sally Ann Freeney who is producing the play.
This year’s Middle School production of Lord of the Flies presents a powerful and challenging story asks deep questions about human nature, leadership, and the fragile balance between order and chaos—questions that resonate with young men on the journey toward maturity.
These performances are the result of remarkable commitment, collaboration, and courage. Our young actors have given their time, energy, and hearts to this production, growing in confidence, discipline, and empathy along the way. Their transformation on stage reflects the broader transformation we seek to nurture in every Villanova student.
I also acknowledge the dedication and creative vision of our talented staff who have directed, produced, and supported this production with unwavering passion and care. Their belief in the boys and their ability to bring such a demanding story to life has been truly inspiring. Mr Michael Ware and Ms Sallyanne Freney have driven this project with passion to reengage our students in the performance arts and light their fire of interest.
Performance is more than entertainment—it is an essential part of formation. Through the Arts, boys learn to express themselves, take risks, and step into the lives of others. In doing so, they grow in character and in their understanding of the world.
I have witnessed them practise, perform and go through their dress rehearsals, and it is quite magnificent the way in which the boys have engaged and committed to this project. I wish them all the best as they perform this weekend across their shows on Saturday at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
So, it has been and continues to be a busy time in the Green and Gold. But we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Mr Paul Begg, Principal
Welcome back to Term 3! I trust that all families had a restful break and are returning with renewed energy for the term ahead. It has certainly been exciting and engaging to work with students across Year 7 to 12 and see the continued growth in maturity and character. I thank students for the way they have returned and engaged with me so far this term.
As we commence the second half of the academic year, it is timely to focus on the Villanova College value of Interiority – a call to look within ourselves with honesty and purpose. Interiority invites each student to reflect deeply on their Semester 1 journey – their academic progress, friendships, co-curricular commitments and personal growth. It is through this honest reflection that students are best positioned to set meaningful goals, take responsibility for their learning, and continue striving towards becoming their best selves.
When involved in this reflection, reports and feedback from Semester 1 provide a valuable mirror. They offer insight into our strengths as well as areas that would benefit from further targeted development. I encourage all students to take the time to reflect on, ask questions about, and use these insights as a launching pad for a successful Term 3.
This internal rumination ties in beautifully with our Empower Ed interviews on Friday where House Mentors will work with students individually on the goals they have set and how they will achieve them. In a lovely way, our Junior School has also been able to complete a similar goal setting event with their buddies in Year 11 and 12. Being down there to watch our 11’s and 5’s interact was, for me, a really touching moment.
As St Augustine reminds us, we
“should turn inward, away from external distractions, to discover God and ourselves. This “going within” involves introspection, self-reflection, and a search for truth within one’s own heart and consciousness.”
On another note, I would like to also take this opportunity to wish all students participating in Trimester 3 sports the very best for the season ahead. Whether on the basketball court, the tennis court, or the track, may our young men continue to demonstrate the Villanova values of teamwork and humility. While the scoreboard may reflect results, it is character, effort, and sportsmanship that truly define success.
Term 3 is always a rich and rewarding term at Villanova. We look forward to the continued growth and engagement of all students as they embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Best wishes for a successful and fulfilling term.
Mr Sean O’Neill, Dean of Students Senior and Middle School (Acting)
Catholic Education Week at Villanova College
Inspiring Minds, Nurturing Hearts, Building Futures
This week, Villanova College proudly joined Catholic schools across Queensland in celebrating Catholic Education Week—a time to honour the unique identity and mission of Catholic education in our community.
As an all-boys Catholic College in the Augustinian tradition, Villanova offers more than just academic learning. We are a community where young men are encouraged to explore their gifts, grow in compassion, and deepen their understanding of their faith. The theme for 2025, “Inspiring Minds, Nurturing Hearts, Building Futures,” beautifully reflects our commitment to forming well-rounded young men who are not only capable learners but also thoughtful, faith-filled leaders.
Throughout the week, students have been invited to reflect on their personal faith journeys—how they encounter God in everyday life, how they live out Gospel values, and how they are called to serve others. Our liturgies, classroom activities, and community conversations have provided valuable opportunities for our boys to connect faith with action, and to recognise the role they each play in shaping a just and compassionate world.
Catholic Education Week also gives us a moment to thank the many people who contribute to the life of Villanova College—our dedicated staff, supportive families, and parish community. Together, we work to create a learning environment where each student is known, valued, and guided to become the best version of himself.
One of the great joys of working at Villanova College is the opportunity to share in the faith journeys of our students. Teaching in a Catholic school allows me to explore my own beliefs more deeply while walking alongside our boys as they begin to ask life’s big questions. I love nothing more than when I’m inundated with questions during a Religion lesson—those moments of genuine curiosity, wonder, and challenge are when faith becomes real, relevant, and alive. It’s in these conversations that we grow together, discovering that faith is not just something we learn about, but something we live and experience each day.
As we continue this journey together, may we keep inspiring minds, nurturing hearts, and building strong futures rooted in faith, friendship, and the Augustinian spirit.
Mr Stephen Rouhliadeff, Head of Junior School
Happy Catholic Education Week!
This week we have been embracing the Catholic Education theme of Communities of Faith, Hope & Love. The week allows Catholic school communities across Queensland to celebrate the unique spirit and shared mission of Catholic education. At Villanova College we hope that as a Catholic school in the Augustinian tradition that we are able to be the hands and feet of Christ here on earth. We are hopeful that by doing so we are bringing about a world that is more loving and just. Some of the ways in which we put our faith in action was evident through the many acts of service and love.
Our Vinnies group held a clothing collection drive for the patrons of Emmanuel City Mission (ECM) and the College held a free dress day to raise more funds for ECM to help feed the needy that often frequent the shelter. We are hopeful that these small donations will make a big difference in the lives of others.
Other fun activities included a special edition JAM for Junior School students and YCS and the Year 12s spending time in the Junior School celebrating the connection between the Juniors and their “big brothers” in the Senior School.
Another highlight for our students was visiting Lourdes Hill College and taking part in their Social Justice, Fast Fashion Forum promoting a sustainable future.

FUSE Cup Minecraft CTF Victory!
Last Wednesday schools from across the wider Brisbane district visited Villanova College to participate in the annual FUSE Cup Competitive Minecraft 5v5 Capture the Flag (CTF) tournament. This is the third year our college has hosted this event, thanks to our state-of-the-art networking facilities and dedicated fleet of esports laptops… and our even more dedicated playing groups and student AV team.
Largely led by Year 11 student, Zac H, the lower Hanrahan Theatre was transformed into a three-station esports arena with custom lighting modes. Behind the “look” was the networking, with a complex system of cabled devices, again led by Zac H and his team of junior AV assistants. The games were hosted on PC servers by a committed team of students Cameron D, Robert B, Thomas B and Jacob S. My thanks to their participation throughout the program.
Villanova entered two teams in the draw, and both teams faced off against each other in the second semi-final. For some time now, our Year 8 team has consistently held second place behind our senior team—the reigning AIC Championship squad made up of experienced Year 9 and 10 players. Today the Year 8 team were pushed in their attack and defence strategies and took the win 2-1 late in the match. These boys then went on to win a thrilling grand final against Hillcrest College to claim the FUSE Cup Minecraft trophy for the first time. Congratulations to Thomas B, Tim B, Nick B, Sebastian D, Coen W, and Finn Z. To our semi-finalists and reigning AIC champions Damian E, Taylor P, Alex T, Oliver T, and Joseph Y thanks for your gameplay, rivalry and sportsmanship.
House Esports Cup is Up and Racing!
Over the past two weeks, students in Year 7-12 House Mentor Groups have had a different start to their mornings. A team of esports facilitators (Cooper C, Damian E, Zac H, Adam K, Taylor P, Toby P and Alex W) led by Mr Matt Smith, Ms Sophie Kenny and myself, have taken a Nintendo Switch to each group for informal time trials on a carefully selected Mario Kart track. Students have been invited to race against the clock and their House peers to post the fastest track time possible. The faster the time, the more points for their group and House. Next week, we visit the Junior School at recess times to time trial our youngest racers in their Houses as well.
These time trials will culminate in the fastest racers in the House competing for their House Cup, with the House Champion competing in the overall House Esports Championship event. My thanks to our esports facilitators for their early morning starts and coordination of these time trial sessions across the campus. Thanks also to the College and our Student Formation Team for introducing and supporting esports as a House activity, building and supporting an inclusive program of social and competitive “sports” among our students. I will share the winners and competition highlights in further newsletter updates.

Co-Curricular Music Photos
A quick message of thanks to our students and staff for their preparation and organisation around last week’s co-curricular music photos. On what was already a day of interruption with parent-teacher interviews and period adjustments, all went seamlessly. Thank you all – looking forward to viewing the final product in our Yearbook in four months time.
Year 5 Open Rehearsal
On Tuesday this week, we were joined by parents of our Year 5 musicians at our first Open Rehearsal for 2025. The morning is a great opportunity for our parents to learn a little more about the secrets and mysteries of beginner ensemble, and a wonderful opportunity for our staff to make apparent where and how the learning occurs. Learning an instrument in ensemble is an incredible tool for developing self-regulation, social awareness, cognitive development, and empathy – it’s amazing so much is achieved, even through the process of learning ‘Hot Cross Buns!’
We are looking forward to our next Open Rehearsal next term. We hope that you are able to join us and enjoy the progress that the boys are demonstrating.

Welcome to Week 3 – a critical stretch in Trimester 3 where character and consistency are what count most.
Round 1 of AIC sport saw an impressive start across Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis – with all Firsts teams securing strong wins over St Laurence’s College. These were hard-fought contests built on discipline, resilience and trust in the game plan.
🏀 First V delivered a composed 75–62 victory in front of a packed Goold Hall crowd
🏉 First XIII edged out Lauries 24–22 in a gutsy Grand Final rematch
🎾 First IV sealed a 5–3 win, closing out both doubles matches under pressure
Across the board, Villa teams showed they are ready to compete – and just as importantly, ready to improve.
To all students, remember: selection is earned each week, not given once. Coaches value commitment, coachability and effort in every training session. To those not selected in AIC squads, the Colours Cup is now open for registration – a chance to stay involved, develop your game and support your mates.
We now look ahead to Round 2 against St Edmund’s College – with our Rugby League boys enjoying another home round at Villa Park. Thank you to all families supporting our canteens, transport logistics and coaching staff.
Congratulations to our Villanova golfers who represented the College so well at last week’s AIC Golf Championships. Well done to the boys on their efforts, and thank you to Mr Conlan for his support and guidance in taking the team.
Finally, a date claimer – Villanova will host the AIC Track & Field Meet 1 at QSAC on Thursday, 28 August. If you can assist as a staff volunteer (for around three hours), please email Mr Andrew Lund. Your help is deeply appreciated.
Thank you again for your support, encouragement and belief in Villa Sport.
Go well, stay humble, and Go Villa!
Mr Matthew Hannan, Director of Sport

Basketball
The AIC Basketball season tipped off with an exciting and hard-fought Round 1 against St Laurence’s College. Across all grades, Villanova teams put on a strong showing, racking up 22 wins from 31 games — a fantastic start to the season! A big thank you goes to our coaches for the time, energy, and preparation that went into getting our teams ready.
Our First V team faced a fierce challenge from a talented Laurie’s outfit. The game was a thriller from start to finish, with both sides trading blows before the Villa boys found their rhythm and pulled away in the final quarter to claim a well-earned 75–62 victory. It was a gritty, determined performance — the kind that sets the tone for the rest of the season.
With momentum on their side, the First V and all teams have been training hard this week ahead of another big match-up in Round 2 against St Edmund’s College.
We encourage all families to stay in the loop by checking the Locker Room page for weekly updates, team news, and important reminders. Let’s keep the energy up and continue to support our teams throughout the season!

Rugby League
It was a frosty morning out at Villa Park as we commenced the official AIC season with round 1 versus our favourite rival, St Laurence’s College. The coaches and players have been preparing for many weeks now and were eager to see how we would fare on the field. Across the day, Villanova won 7 matches, lost 4 and listed 1 draw. This was a fantastic result against a very strong League College, with a special mention to our Second XIII team and coach, Mr Joubert, for recording a massive 36-10 win.
With the day set, the clock hit 12.15 which meant our First XIII team would take the field in what was the Grand Final rematch from the Confraternity Shield tournament a number of weeks ago. In that match, the SLC team took the win 18-12 in what was an absolute cracker of a game, and we knew that round 1 would be no different. After a great performance by our side, they recorded their first win for the 2025 AIC season 24-22.
First XIII Captain, Hudson B, had this to say:
After falling short to Lauries in the Confraternity Grand Final, we identified a number of key areas for improvement leading into our Round 1 game against them. The focus was on maintaining our attack under fatigue and staying committed for the full 60 minutes. Michael, our coach, really emphasised the mental side of our preparation at training—reminding us that to win this game we’d need to dig deep, and show second efforts not just for ourselves, but for the brother beside us. We came out firing, playing fast and flat through the middle, and went up 12-4 early. As expected, Lauries fought back and took the lead with about 20 minutes to go. What made me proud was the way we didn’t roll over—we stayed committed, kept turning up, and found a way to ice the game in the final minutes.
Looking ahead to our match against SEC, our focus is on tightening up our discipline—avoid giving away costly penalties that puts us under pressure—and staying calm and patient in attack near the line. No need to overplay, just back our shape and stick to simple, smart footy. With all of this in place, I’m confident we’ll come away successful against Eddies.
As we turn our attention to round 2 v St Edmunds College. A few reminders for this coming weekend –
All the best to our teams for Round 2!
Mr Todd Kropp, Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis
First IV Tennis
The First IV embarked on a big challenge to start the season, playing at home at Morningside Tennis Centre to take on one of the preseason favourites in St Laurence’s College. Villanova started well, winning one of the doubles rubbers to take a 1-1 tie with the four singles and doubles rubbers to come.
With the confidence of the team sky high after a such as good first up doubles showing, the boys then went to work on the singles court, with two victories from our number 3 (Alex W) and number 4 (Luke P). It was a great effort from our vice-captain (Ben B) and captain (Reuben W) who put up a great fight against very strong opposition for their singles matches.
With the scores tied at 3-3 heading into the last round of doubles, the team really stood up, showed great character, and played some exhilarating doubles tennis, with both matches going back and forth but ultimately resulting in both pairings winning their doubles matches, which meant that we took the Round 1 win against SLC 5-3.
Overall, the win was an outstanding result for the team who have been training for many weeks, so it was great reward for much hard work and the team’s commitment to be ready to go for round 1. It will certainly give the team much confidence as we take on strong competition again in our round 2 opposition in St. Edmund’s this weekend.

Villanova Tennis Championships
On Sunday 20 July, we held our ‘annual’ Villanova Tennis Championships at Morningside Tennis Centre. I would also like to thank our superstar Junior Tennis coordinator Mrs Maria Mascadri, who assisted in running the day and kindly gave up her time yet again on a Sunday morning, her dedication and commitment to the Tennis program is always appreciated by myself and the entire Villanova Tennis community.

Round 1 Tennis vs SLC.
I would like to congratulate all our Villa Tennis players from our Round 1 matches against St Laurence’s. It was always going to be a tough day against a very well-trained opposition. I did get the opportunity to watch the matches that were played at Morningside Tennis Centre where the years 9-Opens teams competed. It was very refreshing to see how competitive and energy driven our players are, and how far they have come from the beginning of the pre-season. It was great to watch our boys compete in tie-break situations with the same determination that they started the match, it is certainly much easier said than done – but I strongly encourage all our players to value and fight for every opportunity to win a rally, game, or set.
The results showed that we had 8 wins and 8 losses across the day. The highlight for the program overall, is that we were very competitive across “each year group” against SLC, showcasing that the hard work and dedication that the students and coaches are displaying, are leading to positive and well-deserved results on match days.
This upcoming Saturday, 2 August, our Years 9-Opens teams will be at home again at Morningside Tennis Centre, while our Years 5-8 teams will be away at George Alder Tennis Complex and ATC Campus.
Good luck to all teams in your round 2 AIC Tennis matches.

Selection process
The goal of this selection process is to address and resolve players’ concerns in a structured and collaborative way. It begins with direct communication with the coach and escalates to higher-level review (if necessary), ensuring fairness and the effective resolution of both minor and serious issues.
Step 1: Direct Communication
The player discusses their concern directly with the coach, who also provides feedback.
Step 2: Further Action
If the student’s concern is not resolved, the player consults the relevant Sport Coordinator, who will look to involve the coach.
Step 3: Serious or Unresolved Issues
For significant concerns or unresolved matters, the player and their parents will meet with the relevant Sport Coordinator and the Director of Sport.
Minor Disputes (handled by coach or Sport Coordinator):
Serious Misconduct (escalates to Sport Coordinator & Director of Sport):
Final Reflection
“ Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” – John Wooden
As we move deeper into Trimester 3, John Wooden’s words remind us that true success is not measured by trophies or scoreboards, but by the effort we give every day. Whether you are pushing yourself at training, cheering from the sidelines, or stepping up when it counts – your actions shape the culture of Villa Sport.
From the grit shown at Confraternity to the energy of Round 1, from the quiet grind of early mornings to the joy of Colours Cup on Friday afternoons – this program is built on commitment, not comfort.
Thank you to every student giving their all, and to every coach, coordinator and parent walking alongside them. Your consistency, care and example elevate what we do.
Let us tackle the rest of this term with purpose and pride – knowing success is earned one session, one serve and one selfless act at a time.
