As we conclude the first Semester of 2025 I certainly reflect on what has been an incredible period of time.
We have welcomed an Augustinian Pope, broken ground on our STEM and Great Hall facility, we have had over 300 teams and 1000 boys represent the College in Cricket, Volleyball, AFL, Swimming, Rugby Union, Football, Chess and Debating. The House showcase has been run and won and it was again a triumph of spirit and encouraged the boys to move away from their stereotyped understandings of what it is OK to be a part of. We had a wonderful Mission week, inspiring masses and celebrations and some outstanding academic performances and achievements, not the least of which was the Da Vinci Decathlon teams placing in all 11 divisions we entered.
Our musicians have engaged in their program of learning and performance and delivered outstanding performances at both the debut concert series and the winter concert series which concluded on Thursday night with, for the first time invitational musicians from St Augustine’s Sydney as part of the annual sporting and cultural exchange. This year saw both Augustinian Colleges play the fixtures in Basketball, Rugby, Football and debating, and the music exchange, in fine style and wonderful sportsmanship understanding that this is not so much about competition as comradery and brotherhood.
All of this is wonderful, but we are only at halftime! The best is yet to come as we move on through the year and the boys are further challenged to commit, participate, excel and grow. This call is to their daily academics, their friendships, their faith and is expressed through daily actions. Too often, influenced buy both mainstream and social media, we fall into the allure of common accepted rhetoric about effort, achievement and performance forgetting very quickly that words mean little, and produce nothing, without clarity of purpose, an understanding of meaning and committed action. It is in this space that our teachers and coaches will direct the boys toward in this latter part of 2025.
I encourage the boys to enjoy their break but also to remember that without sustained effort their dreams will lie in wait for eternity. This time of break should be for rest and enjoyment but also be filled with considered reflection and interiority as they look at the fruits of their labour here at Villa. They need to ask the question “What more can I do, and who can help me, become the man who I am not yet?”
We welcome and congratulate the new Archbishop of Brisbane
It was with great pleasure we welcomed the news in Brisbane that he successor to Archbishop Mark Coleridge had been announced. The appointment by Pope Leo XIV last night of the Most Reverend Shane Mackinlay is a wonderful opportunity for our Brisbane Archdiocese to continue the wonderful work of Archbishop Mark. Our new Archbishop is currently Bishop of Sandhurst, in regional Victoria. Below is the statement from Archbishop Coleridge responding to Pope Leo’s announcement.
“For many reasons I welcome the appointment of Bishop Shane Mackinlay as my successor in Brisbane where he will be a distinguished addition to the line of Archbishops.
Bishop Shane has shown himself an unusually gifted man in his years as priest in Ballarat and Melbourne and as bishop in Bendigo and beyond.
He has a fine mind, and he will bring intellectual firepower to his ministry as Archbishop and to public debate in Queensland and Australia. He will be able to dialogue intelligently with a culture which at many points is distant from Christian understandings.
He is also an experienced pastor who knows how to listen and who through his time as Master of Catholic Theological College in Melbourne remained a Parish Priest near Ballarat. As bishop, he has been able both to shepherd the Diocese of Sandhurst and to accept responsibility on the global stage.
He deals well with both the big picture and the nuts and bolts, which is why he is a capable administrator. That will serve him well in a diocese as large and as complex as Brisbane.
Temperamentally, he is not easily flustered, having about him a poise that makes him a good driver in heavy traffic. That too will serve him well as Archbishop at a time when the traffic can be heavy.
At 60 he is also of the right age and maturity to assume greater responsibility not only in Brisbane and Queensland but nationally and internationally.
As we look to the installation on 11 September 2025, I have no doubt Bishop Shane will bring these gifts and fresh energies to the Archdiocese of Brisbane, where he will be creative in pursuing the path of synodality into the future God is preparing. I am grateful to Pope Leo for this wise choice of a new Archbishop, and I commend Bishop Shane to you and your prayers as he prepares for this new mission.” Ref: The Appointment to Brisbane of Bishop Shane Mackinlay – Archdiocese of Brisbane
Annual College Appeal
As we enter the end of Semester break families will have received my emails regarding the opportunity to contribute to our College building fund and assist in the completion and fit out of the new STEM and Great Hall project. At this time of year there are many wonderful causes to support and donate to and I do know that ours is just one of them. However, I do hope all of our families can contribute even a small amount to assist the College in securing this wonderful new state of the art facility for our current students and generations to come.
Mr Paul Begg, Principal
As Term Two draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the many achievements and memorable events that have shaped our journey over the past ten weeks.
Our young men have approached Assessment Weeks and Year 12 final Internal Assessments with diligence, focus, and integrity. The commitment shown across the senior years is a testament to the strength of their work ethic and the support of both their teachers and families. Well done boys!
A true highlight of the term was welcoming students and staff from St Augustine’s College, Sydney, for friendly competition and camaraderie. Our shared Augustinian values were on full display as students engaged in Football, Rugby, Basketball, Music, and Debating. Of particular significance was the inclusion of Student Leadership Development sessions—fostering dialogue and growth that will continue to shape our young leaders in the Augustinian tradition.
This weekend, our Year 12 students will celebrate a milestone moment—their Senior Formal at the Greek Club. This highly anticipated evening promises joy, elegance, and the creation of cherished memories that will last a lifetime. We hope it is a night filled with laughter, gratitude, and celebration.
Another notable event was the next event in the Loreto and Villanova Cup – the Netball competition. The game was played in great spirit and with intense skill, with Loreto emerging victorious to tie the overall standings at 1-1. The energy and enthusiasm on the court and among spectators highlighted the strength of our interschool friendships and the power of sport to connect.
Trimester Two Sport has also drawn to a close, and we commend all students on their growth, resilience, and sportsmanship. Whether through the elation of victory, the resilience required in a draw, or the important lessons that come from defeat, our young men have grown in character and camaraderie. As St Augustine reminds us: “In order to discover the character of people, we have only to observe what they love.” What our boys love — team, school, friendship, and fair competition—shone through in every moment of the season.
As we head into the winter break, we extend our thanks to all families, staff, and students for their partnership and dedication throughout Term Two. May the holiday period offer rest, renewal, and time with loved ones.
On a personal note, I want to express my heartfelt thanks for the privilege of supporting the gentlemen of the Senior School thus far. It has been an honour to get to know your young men and you as families. The engaging conversations, the opportunity to work in true partnership with you, and the chance to assist the boys in growing not only for today but for tomorrow, is something I will always cherish. Thank you.
Many Hearts, One Spirit.
Ms Kate Mellor, Acting Head of Senior School
As we reach the end of Semester One, I want to take a moment to thank our Middle School community—students, families, and staff—for a positive and productive first half of the year. There have been many highlights, and as I reflect on the journey so far, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and pride in what we’ve achieved together.
Welcoming our new Year 7 families and the entire Year 7 cohort into the Middle School in Week 1 was a significant and memorable moment. From there, we launched straight into an exciting and busy Term, with events like the Swimming Carnival, Year 7 Camp, House Breakfasts, and the Year 9 Rite Journey ‘Rite of Beginning’ all taking place in the first five weeks alone.
Throughout the semester, students have had rich opportunities to grow beyond the classroom. We’ve witnessed participation in Debating, Music Concerts, two full trimesters of Sport, a range of Ministry activities, and so much more. These experiences form the heartbeat of our community and are what make Villanova’s Middle School such a vibrant and well-rounded place to learn.
At the centre of it all remains our core focus: learning. I’ve had the privilege of completing many ‘Learning Walks’ across the term, visiting classrooms and observing firsthand the energy and thoughtfulness that our teachers put into creating engaging and meaningful lessons. It’s truly inspiring to see our young men developing new skills and growing in confidence across their subjects.
While there is much to celebrate at the end of any term, we must also be honest about areas where improvement is needed. To this end, we will be placing a renewed focus in Semester Two on a few key issues that require attention:
These issues will be our behavioural priorities in the new term as we continue to work with our students to ensure their actions reflect the standards expected of a Villanova gentleman.
When we return, we’ll begin Semester Two with our Empower Ed Goal Setting sessions—an opportunity to set meaningful goals and start the second half of the year with clarity and purpose.
Looking ahead, I encourage all students to take time over the mid-year break to rest, recharge, and reflect on their Semester One journey. There is much to be proud of, and I hope each student finds space to acknowledge the progress they’ve made.
In the spirit of St Augustine:
“It is important to experience and appreciate the wonders of the world. Use well your free time, to travel, to explore, and to discover new things, for thus you may foster and grow an ever-increasing sense of wonder and gratitude.”
Wishing all families a safe and refreshing holiday.
Warm regards
Mr Sean O’Neill, Head of Middle School
Term 2 assessment is officially complete. Let’s all exhale together. There is no better feeling for students, after some busy weekends hitting the books as well as evenings spent revisiting main ideas on OneNote pages. Parents, you will also appreciate the relief from combining co-curricular schedules and finding precious minutes to quiz sons about exam topics. Junior School staff are still very busy with marking, moderating and, next week, entering the data into several platforms. There will also be Professional Development meetings as well as Term 3 Curriculum Planning until Friday of Week 10 for our staff.
Moderation processes take a great deal of time and concentration. The work submitted by students is first checked over by class core teachers. Then, teaching partners moderate samples and establish A, B, C, D and E achievement bands. This is done across fifty-eight pieces and during this time, there are conversations about the observations during the assessment process – use of time, mindset during the task and ability to focus in that time period. At weekly Year Level meetings, the Year 5 and Year 6 teams then bring the samples to cross check across the three learning spaces.
Discussions take place about expectations, teaching and learning experiences and consensus is reached between the grades, with the collaboration of the Head of Year Curriculum and Pedagogy Leaders – Melissa Liddy (Year 6) and Chloe Adams (Year 5). The Learning Enrichment Team is also involved in mediation, ensuring that supportive measures are in place for students with specific needs and diagnoses. After these meetings, teaching partners will refine their marking, and work on providing feedback to the students under the headings “What Went Well” and “Even Better If.”
Feedback during the learning phase is given the highest priority – including check in points that scaffold tasks into manageable pieces. The feedback that is recorded on the Villanova Assessment Cover Sheets, sent home at the end of term, is also important. It recognises what was completed well by your son – and this should be congratulated as part of your conversation at home. There is always something to praise and each boy should be proud of managing at least one thing in every subject area. There are also suggestions to remember in future tasks – and these are important to discuss, keeping a positive outlook to changes being a part of the learning process. Even one change is a step in the right direction. The aim is to always move forward, and some students might be on a steeper learning and achievement curve than others – but as long as it’s towards meeting expectations then be assured there are reasons to be proud and tell your son that he has done well.
There is something very comforting about the June/July holiday break. The cooler weather means we crave the sleeping in (very few jump out of bed with the sun rising late), thoroughly enjoy the odd pyjama morning (that sometimes reaches the afternoon) and get the time to cook those recipes that fill the house with comfort by the early afternoon (I really do love the idea of dinner by 6pm instead of the late shifts we must run with work and sport timetables during the term). The midday sun is one we can sit in with a great book, go for a river walk (without getting heatstroke) or tackle the gardening in comfort (I continue to find great satisfaction in growing chilli and herbs from seeds – the pots are out of control up both sides of the house). For families who are heading off camping, we wish you dry and sunny weather – may the campfires roar and soothe the souls. Groups who head to the beach, we hope the waves are clear and good for surfing. Interstate travellers, we wish you safe travels in the air and on roads. May the health of all communities be stable.
Term 3 begins on Monday 14 July. After Semester 1 reports are released, details will be emailed through for online Parent Teacher Conferences in Week 2, setting Term 3 goals and discussing strategies for progress across curriculum, social-emotional and organisational areas. We look forward to our boys’ returning, wearing their College ties as per Term 2. Stationery supplies restocked, some new class workbooks, haircuts meeting College expectations and shiny shoes will be expected, along with the motivation to reach every potential, with our full support.
Mr Stephen Rouliadeff, Head of Junior School
This week, we were delighted to welcome our brother school, St Augustine’s College, as they join us on their SAC tour. Together, we are reminded of the deep bond we share through our Augustinian heritage and the values that unite us. This year, our theme—the restless search for truth—echoes the heart of our tradition and invites us all into a deeper journey of discovery and faith.
Both Villanova College and St Augustine’s proudly uphold the motto Vincit Veritas—Truth Conquers—a phrase inspired by the writings of St Augustine. It reminds us that truth is not just a concept, but a lived experience that draws us closer to one another and ultimately to Christ.
Led by College Leadership and the Mission and Identity Team earlier in the week, new staff were able to delve deeper into this theme at an overnight staff formation retreat – Forming Hearts and Minds. It was an experience grounded in the Augustinian story and the shared purpose that shapes life at Villanova College. The retreat was a chance to explore Villanova’s mission, values, and strategic direction while building a deeper understanding of what it means to teach and lead in an Augustinian school. Through sessions on relational pedagogy, reflective practice, and restorative approaches, our staff reflected on their own passions and how they contribute to the growth of fine young men. It was a meaningful experience of connection, reflection and formation.
Young Christian Students
Last week, our YCS leaders and Year 12 students spent time with the Junior School, playing games and building connections that go beyond the classroom. Moments like these reflect the heart of our community – where leadership begins with kindness and service. Thank you to our YCS Executive for their organisation of this initiative.
Green Team
On Mission Day, our Green Team led the collection of cans and containers for recycling through the Containers for Change program. Several Year 10 RE students took the initiative to assist with transporting the items to the local depot – a great example of service, sustainability, and student leadership in action.

As Term 2 comes to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on what we’ve achieved and to look forward to the holidays.
Below are some simple tips to help ensure boys make the most of their break:
Speaking of fun, it’s worth mentioning how awesome it was to see all the boys participate in the House Choir during Mission Day. Everyone loved it — boys had a great time, and there are still (somewhat) friendly conversations about who they thought should have taken out the podium finishes! I’ve also heard plenty of talk about ideas for next year’s event, so you know it’s a winner when everyone’s already talking about what’s next.
It’s been great to see so many boys participating in the Push Up Challenge each morning. We do our push-ups, share a few laughs, and have conversations about mental health and wellbeing along the way. It’s a positive way to start the day, and I love how many boys are getting involved and showing support. Keep it up — it’s great to see everyone coming together in this simple but impactful way.
One of the highlights of the year so far would have to be watching the Year 12 cohort do a wellbeing lesson on social dancing. Lead by Robert Dryden, the boys leant classics like Nutbush, Stayin alive, Macarena and YMCA. They were cautious beforehand – actually I’ll be honest – they didn’t want to do it. But that all changed the minute they started dancing in the hall. I’m looking forward to seeing their moves at the formal this Saturday. Rumour has it some of them were even practicing on the weekend.
I recently had a chat with Year 8 student Charlie M, who told me he had a birthday party over the weekend. Instead of the usual gifts, he asked his friends to donate to the You Are Not Alone Fun Run happening this weekend. What an incredible act of kindness. Charlie managed to raise just under $100, and I was truly blown away by his generosity. Moments like these exemplify the qualities we hope to see in our Villa men—thinking of others and making a positive impact to raise awareness around mental health. Thanks, Charlie—you’re a true legend.
You Are Not Alone Fun Run details: on June 22 at the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. Organized by Villa students since 2021, this year’s event features live music, food trucks, and a 4.5km run or walk focused on raising awareness for youth mental health. Everyone is welcome! Tickets are $15 each, and you can sign up at yrna.com.au.
Enjoy your break — relax, unplug when you can, and come back refreshed and ready for Term 3!
