Welcome Back!
It is with immense pleasure and enthusiasm I welcome families, new and old, to the 2025 school year. Perhaps the best way of welcome and to understand our goals and purpose this year is to reflect on the last twelve months, and particularly our graduating class.
Our Year 12 results in 2024 were again outstanding. The boys worked hard to achieve their goals and performed to their best. As College Principal I was exceptionally pleased to have eight boys in the top 1% of the State, 11 boys topping the State, and 17 boys receive straight A’s in all six ATAR subjects. Some 35 boys achieved straight A’s in their ATAR calculating subjects.
I think it is more than fair to say that as a College community we have helped ‘launch’ the boys well and are duly thankful for their hard work and that of the teachers and parents that guided them.
However, it is shortsighted to consider that these tell the entire story of a College or a Senior cohort. As a Catholic school in the Augustinian tradition, we have a mission that asks for more and indeed we do need to look a little deeper than a snapshot post to consider our impact and success.
I am not sure such metrics matter too much post university entry or starting in the workplace. We like many posted our ‘infographic’ to summarise our performance as a mark of commendation to our Seniors but in the real mission of our College there isn’t an ‘infographic’ you can post that details our differentiators; the development and challenge in growing character, integrity, and faith.
To parents new and old in 2025 and beyond, we will continue to work hard to ensure boys achieve their academic best. Rest assured we will with equal, if not greater passion look to ask questions of our academic, sporting, cultural and faith formation programs. Questions that look to answer important aspects of a Villanova education;
As graduates will they be men of respect, honour, and care?
As partners, fathers, sons, colleagues, and leaders will they show compassion, thoughtfulness, diligence, responsibility and be unafraid to show, and receive, love in all its forms and toward all people?
Will they have faith?
In their time at Villanova have they developed emotional intelligence, attitudes and action responses that encourage resilience, curb aggression, and allow growth and recovery from mistakes and failings?
In 2025 our value in focus is “The Restless Search for Truth”. It is through this lens that we will educate and challenge your boys. The measure of a student, and a school, can be reflected and celebrated through the metrics of academic performance.
We will continue to do that, it is important, but the real measure comes over time. It is this that will remain at the core of our purpose, action, and determination in 2025.
We can’t lose focus on our job to develop each individual’s humanity. To grow intellect is often far easier than to grow character because the ‘tangibles’ of character growth often hide in the shadows until they are tested.
May all of our Villa families in 2025 walk together with passionate intent understanding that their success is indicative of both their heart and their mind and to remember to always have their compass point in the direction of faith and values.
Great Hall and STEM Centre
For those who have attended the College or driven past in the last few months, you would see that our key infrastructure project that will future-proof our College, the Great Hall and STEM Centre has started construction.
While there is a long way to go there has been much design work, needs analysis and planning to get to this stage.
Thankfully, the project itself sits on the campus edge and will therefore have limited impact on student learning nor any likely impact on general safety on campus. However, over these next 18 months, there will be inevitable disruption, particularly to some of our traditional events and venue availabilities as construction engulfs the Seventh Avenue precinct and a portion of St Thomas of Villanova’s “Agora” region. As such I would ask for your patience and cooperation at events as parking among other things, becomes challenging at various events.
I will look to keep you updated as we move through the project and I would say that your contributions to the College’s tax-deductible building fund would be even more appreciated at this time of significant capital expenditure.
Parking and Driving around College Campus
The start of the school year is always a little chaotic and I would ask for your patience as we get into the rhythm of drop-off and pick-up.
I would also remind all parents to show support and respect to our neighbours by following all road signs and parking in only the designated areas, without having sections of your car impeding driveways, or picking your sons up in areas outside of signed pick-up zones putting them at risk as they cross roads at peak traffic times.
As a final point, I am sure many parents are aware that predicting boys behaviour is difficult at the best of times. When we add friends, conversations, mobile phones, and headphones into the occasion, it gets worse. As you drive around the campus, if it says forty, do twenty! The impact on you, your family and the College community should we have a student tragedy isn’t worth the ten minutes time that patience and care costs.
Mr Paul Begg, Principal
Many Hearts, One Spirit – A New Year, A Shared Vision
As we embark on the 2025 academic year, we are proud to introduce the Year 12 cohort’s theme for this year: “Many Hearts, One Spirit.” This theme is more than just a motto; it reflects the core values we strive to embody each day as a Villanova College community. It serves as a reminder of our shared commitment to academic excellence, personal growth, and, most importantly, to living out the Augustinian values that unite us.
“Many Hearts, One Spirit” captures the essence of what it means to be part of Villanova College. As a community, we come from diverse backgrounds, have different talents, and hold unique perspectives. Yet, we are bound together by a common purpose—to grow in knowledge, character, and faith. This year, the Year 12 cohort has adopted this theme as a reflection of their collective journey through their journey at Villanova, and it perfectly aligns with the ideals of our Augustinian tradition.
The theme speaks to the idea that, while each student is an individual with their own hopes and dreams, we are all part of something greater than ourselves—a vibrant and united community. As students enter or continue their journey in the Senior School, this theme challenges each young man to not only contribute to the school community but to also help strengthen it, ensuring that Villanova remains a place where every heart is valued, and every spirit is uplifted.
“Many Hearts, One Spirit” also echoes the values we hold dear as an Augustinian school: Humility, Interiority, Community, Restless Search for Truth, and Ongoing Conversion. These values provide the foundation for how we engage with each other and the world, helping to shape our graduates into young men of integrity, wisdom, and compassion.
The Senior cohort theme is a reminder that academic success is not achieved in isolation. It is built on a foundation of collaboration, hard work, and mutual support. Throughout the Senior School journey, each student will be challenged to pursue excellence in their studies, balancing the demands of rigorous coursework with the opportunities for leadership and personal development. Their academic journey will be informed by the values of truth and humility, recognising that learning is a lifelong pursuit.
As the Year 12 cohort of 2025 steps into this year with the theme “Many Hearts, One Spirit,” they are not only setting the tone for their final year, but also modelling what it means to live the Villanova way. They are asked to reflect on how they can contribute to the unity of the community and lead with integrity and compassion. The message is clear: We are stronger when we come together, embracing our differences, and working towards common goals – A challenge for all of us and for all students in the Senior School. The Year 12 cohort has perfectly modelled their desire for “Many Hearts, One Spirit” in the way they welcomed our new Year 5 and 7 students on Tuesday, teaching and leading the Villanova War Cry and Spirit Rally, which they followed with a Walk of Honour for all Year 5 students from the Senior Precinct to the Junior Precinct.
As we begin this new academic year, let us embrace the opportunities for growth, reflection, and service that lie ahead. By embracing the Augustinian values of humility, interiority, community, the restless search for truth, and ongoing conversion, our students can approach each day with purpose and integrity. Together, as a community, we look forward to another year of academic achievement, personal development, and meaningful involvement in the Villanova College experience.
February Date Claimers
Ms Kate Mellor, Acting Head of Senior School
Dear Members of our Middle School Community,
Welcome to a new academic year in our Villanova Journey! I trust that you have all enjoyed a wonderful holiday break, filled with opportunities to spend quality time with family and friends. For me, the summer has been both rejuvenating and relaxing. I feel refreshed – albeit a little waterlogged and sun-drenched, after many days spent at the beach. For me, there is nothing quite like the rhythm of the waves to reset and refocus for the year ahead.
As we commence this new chapter, I want to share how enthusiastic all of the Middle School staff are about the start of the new year and welcoming your sons back to Villa. Our teachers have been hard at work preparing for the year, and they are keen to meet their classes, build meaningful connections, and create an environment that inspires a love for learning. At Villanova, we firmly believe that at the heart of an excellent education lies the relationship between teacher a student. This is the main reason that we encourage every student to work hard to develop positive, respectful, and collaborative relationships with their teachers. These connections are the foundation for success not only both inside and outside the classroom but, through the lessons now being learnt, into their future lives.
This year, our College theme is centred on one of our core values: a Restless Search for Truth. This theme challenges us to go beyond academic achievement and engage deeply with the world around us. It is about enquiry—asking thoughtful questions, seeking understanding, and discovering how we can make a meaningful impact. It is about embracing the mindset of a lifelong learner, someone who strives to grow in wisdom, compassion, and integrity. I encourage every student to reflect on how they can accept this challenge and contribute positively to our community and beyond.
As part of our adult learning, I would like to remind parents about our upcoming Middle School Parent Information Evening next Thursday, 6 February. The evening will begin at 5:30pm on the Middle School astro turf at the front of the College with an informal opportunity to mingle with other parents and staff over canapés and a drink. Following this, there will be informative addresses from key staff members before breaking into year-level groups for more targeted discussions. This evening is a valuable opportunity to strengthen the partnership between home and school, which is vital for your son’s success.
As we embark on this next stage in our Villa journey, I am filled with optimism and enthusiasm for all that lies ahead. Together, as a College community, I know we can achieve great things. I look forward to getting to know our students and their families better and sharing in the many successes and milestones of the year.
Warm regards,
Mr Sean O’Neill, Head of Middle School
The first day of school is without a doubt my favourite day of the year. I am generally filled with a good blend of excitement and nerves. However, when I see our Junior School boys walk through the gates all those nerves go away and sheer excitement takes over. Beginnings are exciting. It marks a fresh start for us all – 2025 has all the potential and many experiences to come. Breathe deeply. Take a moment for yourself and all that you did to make it, successfully, to the start of our Junior School year. Families have played a very special part in organising uniforms, books, bags, lunch boxes and let us not forget the ultimate challenge of the work/school/home schedule. My heartfelt thanks to you all. What it takes, managing the butterflies and excitement of change and the unknown, will never go unnoticed nor unappreciated by Villanovan staff.
Our theme this year as a College is “The Restless Search for Truth.” Over the next ten months we will aim to honour our Augustinian heritage, embrace our Catholic identity, and show gratitude for the people, spaces, and opportunities we have. From the smallest gifts such as a smile or greeting, to the incredible physical resources such as our St Thomas of Villanova Learning Centre – we will not take for granted. Whatever chances we have, we will embrace and celebrate. Our time together is precious, and we are committed to making every minute count.
The Year 5s have officially taken their place as our youngest Villanovans. Their bright, wide eyes under crisp green College hats, with perfectly ironed grey academic uniforms and polished shoes was a sight to behold on Wednesday morning. This cohort brings the energy, positivity and life that reminds me what a privilege it is to be at the very start of the next 8 years of their Villanovan journey. Greeting these young men, together with our treasured Year 12 students being the “big brothers”, gives me the best feelings of pride, joy, and gratitude. Parents, you are putting your trust in us – we understand the emotions that come with this – thank you.
Year 6s have bounced through the College gates with a wisdom that comes only from living College life firsthand. 2024 shifted the goalposts yet these students navigated the unknown and forged ahead like champions. They are our newest leaders in the Junior School, ready to help their Year 5 buddies and channel all that they know into their best work academically and in co-curricular activities. Now on Level 2, their sky-high city views remind them that they are limited only by their imaginations – these boys have lived through setting goals and understand more about themselves as learners than they ever would have thought possible. They are ready and pumped to make the choices that will bring them the successes they understand exist when time and effort combine.
Our Junior School Staff return with some new faces, we welcome Mr Bourke (5.6), Mr Hayes (Learning Enrichment) and Ms Tasker (Learning Enrichment), teachers in new class spaces and professional goals of their very own. Collaborative teaching partnerships have used the time made available to determine the best for the two classes that join as lifelong learners. Learning Enrichment and Specialist staff are already coordinating timetables and planning for the boys alongside core class teachers. Mrs Mascadri, in her truly inspiring fashion, is determined that all Junior School families will feel like royalty in the first week back – there is no question too small or large for her to find a solution. Together, our team has worked thoroughly to prepare to welcome you all to 2025.
On Monday, 3 February, at 6.15pm, the Parent Information Evening will be conducted in your son’s Junior School classroom. We will start with some drinks and nibbles from 5.30pm on the Terraces at the front of the College on Sixth Avenue. It is a very important time to form connections within the college and be involved in the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead for you and your son. You will also have the opportunity to meet your son’s class teachers and see the collaborative and flexible learning spaces, where organisational and behavioural expectations are of a high standard. Channels of communication, procedures/policies, and the chance to clarify Term 1 matters will be given priority. OneNote and College email expectations and the support you can provide at home with both is important to understand. This evening should conclude no later than 7pm.
My sincere thanks to all staff involved for their work in helping you, the parents, settle into Villanova life through these meetings.
Mr Stephen Rouliadeff, Head of Junior School
As we kick off a new school year, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our students and families. Over the past eight weeks, there’s been a lot of preparation and progress behind the scenes, and it’s always so great seeing all the boys back and hearing about what they got up to in the holidays. By the sounds of it, there could be quite a few who will struggle without the 11:00am sleep in!
A special welcome also goes out to the students and families joining our Villa community for the first time – we are thrilled to have you with us.
At the end of last year, the boys completed the ACER Social-Emotional Wellbeing Survey, which is designed to assess their wellbeing and identify their social and emotional needs. This survey offers valuable insights into their positive and negative emotions, social skills, coping strategies, and resilience. I will share some of these findings at the upcoming Parent Information Sessions. Additionally, the survey enables year-level and gender-based comparisons, helping us identify trends unique to specific ages or cohorts. This allows us to implement targeted interventions and continuously refine and enhance our wellbeing program to meet the boys’ needs effectively.
Compared to their peers across the state, Villa students performed exceptionally well in many areas, giving us much to celebrate. Our boys consistently report feeling happy, connected to their school, and supported by their families, peers, and teachers. Strengths such as emotional regulation, optimism, and social skills were highlighted, with many students actively participating in school activities and forming meaningful relationships.
That said, the data also points to areas for growth, which we view as opportunities to further support our students. Key focus areas include fostering a love of learning, building strategies to manage self-doubt and stress, and encouraging inclusivity and respectful behaviour.
To counteract these trends, our wellbeing program will incorporate targeted lessons, activities, and guest speakers to address important life issues. Topics such as respectful relationships, drug and alcohol awareness, road safety, and social media will provide students with practical knowledge and strategies to navigate challenges, empowering them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Now in its third year, the Be Your Best Self program continues to evolve, offering new activities, opportunities, and experiences to engage our students. At the end of each year, the boys are asked for their feedback on the program and once again, they responded with honesty and insight. They offered both negative and positive opinions and provided thoughtful suggestions for improvement.
It was particularly affirming to see how well they understand the program’s purpose, believe in its benefits, and feel empowered to contribute ideas for its development. Their feedback has been carefully considered, and many of their suggestions have been incorporated into this year’s program, ensuring it remains relevant and impactful.
Below is the program outline for 2025, which is grounded in the PERMA (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishments) framework and guided by Augustinian values. New units have been developed, and existing ones updated, ensuring they remain evidence-based and instrumental in fostering optimal wellbeing.
Now entering its second year, our Empowering Parenting Workshops have been a fantastic addition to the program. These sessions, run by expert professionals, address issues directly impacting your sons and provide practical strategies for families. The workshops align with the content of the wellbeing program, offering a multifaceted approach to your child’s development and strengthening the partnership between families, the community, and Villanova. However, for these workshops to remain viable and worthwhile, we need your support and attendance and strongly encourage parents to take advantage of these valuable opportunities.
This year, our goal is to continue strengthening the Be Your Best Self program, with a strong focus on prioritising the mental health and wellbeing of your sons. Our aim is to equip them with the skills and resilience they need to graduate as well-rounded, well-adjusted young men. I look forward to another fantastic year working with the Villa boys and supporting them on their wellbeing journey.

Welcome to the new school year! It began with a flurry of celebrations and a renewed sense of hope and anticipation of things to come.
Villanova College is a wonderful place to be, and after three years away from the College I feel extremely humbled and grateful for the opportunity to return. I am thoroughly enjoying being with our students, staff and families who have returned with a renewed sense of hope and optimism, eager to fully participate in the life of our school community.
It is therefore fitting that Pope Francis has decreed 2025 a Jubilee Year for the Church, themed “Pilgrims of Hope.” We are all pilgrims on this journey and, as we take on new challenges this year, we are reminded to always remain hope filled.
Saint Augustine reiterates the importance of hope, “whatever our state of life, we cannot live without these three dispositions of the soul, namely, to believe, to hope and to love.” This call to hope encourages us to trust in God’s providence, embrace the unknown with faith, and support one another as we journey together toward His promises.
It also important to note that the Jubilee theme is closely aligned with our own College theme of the “Restless Search for Truth” – that is the quest not merely to discover the truth of what is taught, but rather a commitment to live out the truth of what is learned. Fr Albert Esmeralda tells us that this search for truth in an Augustinian community takes place in a climate of love and friendship.
Certainly, several rituals marking the beginning of our Villanova year took place in a climate of community, love, and friendship. A highlight for me was the Rite of Beginning assembly on Wednesday morning, where we welcomed our newest members to the College. Watching our students collectively with their arms around each other swaying as they proudly sung our College anthem was a wonderful sign of brotherhood, unity, and hope for the year ahead.
The Tuesday spirit rally was another example of friendship and collective hope. Our newest members looking up to our Seniors who led the rally with gusto and pride. It was certainly a sight to behold.
There are many more opportunities at Villanova to bring hope, love, and friendship to others through our various student led Ministry groups and initiatives. We are always looking for students to be involved. Our Ministry groups include:
Green Team Green Team is passionate about all issues concerning the environment such as recycling, litter, planting of vegetation and sustainability.
AFAS (Australian Filipino Augustinian Solidarity) AFAS is the partnership between Villanova and schools and ministries in the Philippines. Our AFAS group promotes ongoing connection and solidarity and in particular looks to assist the poor and marginalised in the Philippines. Students have supported through donations of money and goods as well as visiting through immersions and being part of Global VILLAge zoom connections with our friends in the Philippines.
Vinnies – The St Vincent de Paul ministry raises awareness and fundraises to support about some of the most vulnerable members of the community. Some of these projects include fundraising to support Emmanuel City Mission homeless outreach, organising baskets of groceries for families and individuals at risk in our community, participating in a Sleep Out experience in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness.
YAYM (Young Augustinian Youth Ministries) This ministry is for students in the Middle School who are interested in voicing their ideas to better the College and broader community through fundraising projects as well as outreach to the elderly with their work to support residents of Duhig Village Nursing Home.
YCS (Young Christian Students) Students in YCS have traditionally engaged with Year 5 and 6 students through lunchtime games but expanded to look at the promotion of good mental health in the College last year and will continue to do this in 2025.
Important Dates
Please mark some of the key dates below into your diaries:
Mass of the Holy Spirit – 4 February: There will be a link on our socials for families to join if they are able.
Conversations of the Heart with All Hallows – 18 February: This is the first session of a four-part Twilight Retreat program with students from All Hallows School. The program is designed for Year 11 and 12 students to create a safe space and an environment where young people can share about the challenges of claiming healthy relationships.
Time and Space – Thursday 20 February: This is a great transition event that was launched last year and sponsored by our P&F, for Year 7 students and a significant mother figure. This event offers an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and the joys being faced by both mothers /mother-figures and sons and is an opportunity to strengthen connections. This year we are also introducing a significant father figure and son event.
The Rite Journey: The Departure – 6.30 am 5 March: An event for Year 9 students and their parents at Villa Park. Parents, carers, and mentors all join the students for an opportunity to learn, reflect and look forward.
Please join me in praying the Jubilee Prayer for 2025:
Father in heaven,
may the faith you have given us
in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled
in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom
May your grace transform us
into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,
your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread
the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise for ever.
Amen
You have made us for yourself O Lord
And our hearts are restless, ‘til they rest in you.
Ms Eleni Greenaway, Dean of Mission and Identity
Happy new year to all Villanova families for 2025. Whether you are a returning family or new to the College, it is great to have students back on campus. I look forward to meeting parents / carers over the coming weeks at the various events planned to start the year and to communicate the important messages as they relate to Teaching and Learning.
EmpowerED Program
To commence the new year, all students will be involved in the EmpowerED program on Friday 21 February. A major part of this initiative is that students work with their House Mentors to review their academic achievements and progress in 2024 and set goals for 2025. Information will be sent to students in the coming weeks; however, I would encourage parents / carers to start conversations with their son(s) about the program, and particularly how important it is for goals to be set.
Year 12 Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences
A reminder that Year 12 Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday 19 February. This is a great opportunity for Year 12 parents / guardians and students to engage with teachers early in the year in order to discuss students’ progress and best way forward for the year. Conferences will run from 3.30pm to 8.00pm. Parents / carers will be emailed details soon in order to make bookings. Please note that these conferences will be online via Microsoft Teams.
Scholars’ Assembly
Our Scholars’ Assembly will be held on Tuesday 11 February. This assembly recognises the academic achievements of students from Semester 2 last year. For students in Years 5 to 9, an academic award is given if a student, in their core subjects, achieves a minimum of 4 A’s and a B in their semester results. For students in Year 10, 11 and 12, an academic award is awarded if a student, in all of their subjects, achieves a minimum of all A’s and a B in their semester or unit results.
Started last year, the College will also recognise students who have demonstrated consistency across the school year; those students who received an academic award in Semester 1 and then also in Semester 2 will be given an Academic Award badge as a way of acknowledging their determination and academic purpose.
We also look forward to welcoming back some our most recent graduates from last year’s Year 12 cohort at the assembly to celebrate the fantastic results they achieved.
The Role of Curiosity in Learning
Fuel Your Studies with the Power of ‘Why’
Curiosity is a superpower in disguise. It’s what drives us to ask questions, seek answers, and explore the world around us. When you bring curiosity to your studies, learning transforms from a chore into an adventure. Instead of memorising facts, you uncover connections, develop insights, and truly understand the material. So, how can you harness curiosity to enhance your study routine?
Ask Questions—Constantly
Curiosity starts with a question. As you study, pause to ask yourself questions like:
For example, when learning about historical events, don’t just focus on what happened—ask why it happened, who benefited, and how it impacted the future. Questions like these deepen your understanding and make the material stick.
Tip: Keep a ‘Curiosity Journal’ where you jot down interesting questions as you study. Research the answers later to satisfy your curiosity.
Connect Topics to Your Interests
When you relate what you’re studying to something you’re passionate about, it becomes far more engaging. For instance:
Drawing these connections helps you see the relevance of your studies in everyday life and keeps your motivation high.
Tip: Use analogies from your hobbies to simplify complex ideas. For example, think of the heart as a pump in an engine if you’re into mechanics.
Go Beyond the Textbook
Curiosity thrives when you explore beyond the surface. Don’t limit yourself to the assigned reading—dive deeper by:
Tip: This extra effort doesn’t just expand your knowledge—it also shows your teachers that you’re genuinely engaged with the subject.
Create Your Own ‘What If’ Scenarios
Challenge yourself to think critically by imagining alternative outcomes or scenarios. For example:
Tip: This kind of thinking fuels curiosity and builds critical thinking skills.
Stay Curious, Stay Engaged
Curiosity is the engine of learning. By asking questions, connecting topics to your interests, and exploring beyond the textbook, you can transform even the most challenging subjects into exciting puzzles to solve. Remember, every discovery you make builds your understanding and sharpens your skills. So next time you sit down to study, channel your inner detective and let curiosity guide the way.
Study Skills
For parents (and students) wanting to access additional resources to assist with study, the College subscribes to the Study Skills Handbook website. The Study Skills Handbook website is an online resource with units students can work through to develop their study skills.

BYOD Startup Checklist For ALL Students!
As we commence 2025, it is important to ensure that all students’ BYOD laptops are completely prepared for the year ahead. Here is a short checklist to go over with your son to ensure he is ready:
And finally, some practical reminders. Students should always transport laptops in proper satchels and hardcases. Villanova is a very active campus with busy corridors and congested gates at peak travel times. Hardcases are the most practical way to reduce any likelihood of accidental damage. Labelling is also critical, as many students have the exact same laptop (e.g. HP EliteBook) and the same mouse/pens.
2025 Acceptable Use of Computer Network Agreement to sign by 7 February
It’s time to sign! Each year it is College policy that students in Years 7-12 read and agree to the Acceptable Use of Computer Network agreement. This policy sets out our reasonable expectations for students using our networking and IT equipment, to ensure equitable, safe, and sustainable access. This year’s agreement is found on pages 14, 15 and 16 of the 2025 College Diary – issued to your son on the first day of school this year. Simply read the policy on these pages and sign the agreement together. Your son’s House Mentor Group teacher will look for these signatures in Mentor Group sessions over the next week. This is to be finalised by Friday 7 February, so please engage with this process at the earliest opportunity. Follow this link to see where you need to sight and sign this agreement.

Welcome back to VNC Music 2025
On behalf of the entire music team, I would like to welcome all new and continuing members of our Villanova community. We are looking forward to working with our musicians across the year and preparing some great music to share with you all.
At the conclusion of 2024, Mr Brodie McAllister shared that he would be moving on from our community to take on a full-time music tutor role at St James College in Fortitude Valley. We congratulate Mr McAllister on this opportunity and wish him all the best on this new adventure; I am certain that we will see him again come August! We welcome to our Brass Department Miss Zoe Atkinson. Zoe is a great lower brass instrumentalist and I am certain a great addition to our program. We also welcome Mrs Maree Hall to our choral department. Maree will be working with our Villanotes and our newly formed Aural Musicianship Program in Year 5. I am certain that you will join me in making our new staff most welcome.
Lessons and Rehearsals
Communication regarding our rehearsal schedule for 2025 has been forwarded to all musicians. Please click here for a copy. We are looking forward to all rehearsals commencing in Week 2. Ensemble conductors will communicate with ensembles this week confirming arrangements for next week’s first session.
Please remember that rolls are marked at the beginning of each rehearsal. If you receive an alert regarding your son’s attendance, its purpose is to open a dialogue around the situation. We take our duty of care of your son very seriously and want to ensure all students are safe and where everyone expects them to be.
We are undertaking a new process with timetabling this year in the hopes that we may create a seamless connection across our various tech platforms. You and your son will receive an email communicating your term lesson dates. Please ensure these are either printed and placed on the fridge (old school) or placed in your digital diaries for monitoring. Another email will be sent over the weekend sharing how we will be monitoring attendance and communication through this new mode of record keeping. I hope that this will provide a little more clarity across the entire department as we move into the new year.
Year 5 Instrumental Music
We will meet our Year 5 musicians for the first time this year on Tuesday 4th February. Information regarding the program model and delivery we have here at Villanova will be emailed home to all families. We are looking forward to working with you all over the coming year and believe that your son will enjoy his experience here in the music department.
Music Support Group
Our next Music Support Group meeting will be convened on Monday 10th February in the Chapter Room at the front of the Augustine Centre, commencing at 6:30pm. All parents are most welcome to attend. We encourage you all to come along and learn a little more about what happens behind the scenes in music here at the College.

WELCOME TO 2025 SPORT
Director of Sport Address
Welcome to another exciting year of Villa Sport! I hope the holiday period was a time of rest, reflection, and recharging. For many, it was also an opportunity for growth and preparation – whether through preseason AFL and volleyball training, cricket tournaments or swimming championships. The dedication shown by our students and coaches has been outstanding and sets a strong foundation for the year ahead.
As we begin 2025, I encourage all our students to embrace the mindset that “Winning is possible, but learning is guaranteed.” Success is about more than results – it is about how we conduct ourselves, how we treat teammates and opponents and how we grow from every experience. At Villanova College, our Augustinian values of humility, integrity, and community guide everything we do.
Already we have seen these values in action. Volleyball preseason players have trained hard, showing respect for opponents and officials in their trial matches. Our cricketers, across trials and tournaments, have displayed sportsmanship and resilience, understanding that success is built on self-discipline and respect. The AFL squad has pushed each other through summer, ensuring every player feels valued. In the pool, our swimmers have embraced early mornings and tough sessions, knowing success comes through commitment and team culture.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our sporting community. To our students, thank you for representing Villanova with pride. To our coaches, support staff and coordinators, your leadership inspires our students to be their best. To our parents and families, your support – on the sidelines, at early morning drop-offs and behind the scenes – is invaluable. And to the Villanova Sports Club, your ongoing commitment ensures our programs thrive. As I step into this role I am grateful to be surrounded by such a strong and supportive community.
Villanova continues to excel across a variety of activities and contexts. From swimming state champions to high-level preparations in volleyball, cricket, and AFL, our athletes are making significant progress on major sporting stages. They are also gaining valuable experience at tournaments such as the Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) basketball competition; where a large number of boys participated and competed outstandingly. We look forward to celebrating more achievements throughout the year.
I also extend a warm invitation to all parents and supporters to attend the first Villanova Sports Club meeting of 2025 on Tuesday, February 11. This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with other families, support our sporting community and play a role in shaping the future of Villa Sport.
As we approach trials and competition, I remind our students, parents, and coaches that how we play is just as important as the outcome. Spectators, your support matters – I encourage you to welcome all teams, respect officials and appreciate the efforts of all players. Boys, take pride in every contest but always compete with humility and fairness. Shake hands, thank the opposition, and respect your coaches and teammates – this is what can define Villanova Sport.
With summer conditions in full force I urge all players to prioritise hydration, sun safety and recovery. Look after yourselves and each other.
Wishing everyone a fantastic start to the season – I look forward to seeing you on the courts, fields, and pools in the coming weeks.
Mr Matthew Hannan, Director of Sport

Step 2: Further Action

For significant concerns or unresolved matters, the player and their parents will meet with the relevant Sports Coordinator and the Director of Sport.

AFL
While most of us enjoyed the sunshine and beautiful weather during the holidays, the Open Squad worked hard in the gym and on the field throughout January. From all reports, our Open AFL players are ready and primed for the season ahead. Meanwhile, the Years 5–10 teams began training this week in preparation for their trial games this weekend and the season ahead.
Important Information for Trials and Term One Games
Parental Support
We kindly ask parents to support our coaches by fostering positive attitudes and efforts among their son’s team on game days. Encouraging fun, mutual respect, and growth is key to creating a positive environment. All students are expected to show respect towards teammates, coaches, and opposition players at all times.
After this weekend’s trial games, minor adjustments to team lists may occur based on performance, attitude, and effort during training and games throughout the term.
Best of luck to all players in their final trial matches this weekend!
Mr Matt Conlan, AFL Coordinator
Cricket
Zone Cricket Report
Last term, six Villanova teams competed in the Eastern Districts and BEARS cricket competitions, made possible by dedicated parent volunteers. Special thanks to Matthew Borger and Michael Pauli for their behind-the-scenes efforts in team registrations, coaching coordination, and logistics, as well as to our coaches and managers: Brad McMahon, Denis Dardengo, David McMahon, Kylie and Mick Harris, Steen Carlson, Rachael Tiernan, Paul Innes, James McKenzie, Dan Glass, and Matt Blair.
Division 1 Champions
Villanova 4/153 defeated Wynnum 8/82
Congratulations to our Division 1 team on their hard-fought victory in the final last December. This achievement is a testament to their teamwork, built since Year 5, and the unwavering support of parents. Special appreciation to Brad McMahon and Denis Dardengo (coaches) and Simon Dickie (manager) for their invaluable contributions.
AIC Cricket
All players should be aware that we have a full round of cricket trials this Saturday 1 February against Ashgrove College. The Year 5 teams will have internal trials at Kianawah Park, Tingalpa. As is typical this time of year, there will be a certain level of ‘organised chaos’ as our coaches continue the selection/trial process. The A/B teams also had internal trials last Friday at Villa Park, which has added to our preparation. Some boys have also been moved to different teams after training sessions this week were still used as a net selection trial. Negotiations have been made with Ashgrove to allow coaches from both Colleges to be flexible during the matches this Saturday. Therefore, leniency will be given this weekend, for the coaches to give all players an opportunity to perform. The team lists for this Saturday’s trial round will be finalised and posted online by no later than 10am on Friday the 31 January.
As this weekend’s games are only a trial, may I please ask parents and players to be patient. There will be some movement of players from team to team as the coaches finalise teams ready for Round 1 next weekend v SLC. All boys should check the website regularly to keep up to date with all information regarding teams, training, and games. All players are to wear the correct Villanova cricket uniform; have adequate water, sunscreen, and a hat for the games. Please be advised that all training schedules are now finalised, and training has begun as of this week as per schedule posted on the Villanova College website. All Year 5 training begins in Week 2.
Villanova Cricket Uniform
All players from Years 5-12 are to wear whites.
Cricket Whites
Under no circumstances are players permitted to wear club shirts or club hats.
Important note – All cricketers from Year 5-12 are asked to wear protective equipment. It is compulsory for all batsmen and wicket keepers whilst keeping up to the stumps to wear a helmet. All players are required to purchase and wear their own cricket box (protector) too. The College will provide two helmets per kit, per team.
Cricket managers needed:
Many of our 26 teams are coached by Old Boys or parents. It is important for each team to have a manager to get any important information out to all team members and their parents. Other jobs include, coordinating a contact list, looking after the gear, and organising rosters for scoring and umpiring. This role will allow the coaches to ‘Coach’ and not have to deal with the administrational side of things. If your son is playing and you can take on a manager’s role, could you please email Mr Nathan Dufty at the Sports Office, ndufty@vnc.qld.edu.au to sign on and to let the coach know this Saturday. Unfortunately, we cannot give out personal information and managers will need to get the parents to pass this information on.
Year 5 Cricket Trials
Cricket trials begin this Saturday morning 1 February. All teams will play at Kianawah Park, Wynnum Road Tingalpa. There are 11 cricket fields at this venue and our allocated field numbers are 11 and 12. They are directly in front and on the left-hand side as you drive into the complex. The 5A/B trial will be on Field 11, while the 5C/D trial will be on field 12. Can all players please assemble at 7.30am for am 8am start. Games should conclude by 11.00am at the latest. Please see the map below.
Weekly Team Lists are found in Parent Lounge. Players are to wear cricket whites if they have them or the College sports uniform. Cricket gear will be supplied.
When the trials have concluded, the boys will be selected into teams. This year it looks like we will have five teams, and the boys will be notified as to what team they have been selected into at the conclusion of the trial.
Saturday’s draw, coaches’ details, by-laws, and training schedules have been placed on the website for you to view. A revised team list for Round 1 against St. Laurence’s College will be posted next week.
Please note that many of the boys will change into different teams and that this is part of the trial process. There will be a few changes made throughout the season to try and get the boys into their right ability level groups. If there are training clashes with other commitments, after these changes, please contact Mr Nathan Dufty in the Sports Office and we will attempt to work out a solution.
It will take some time to eventually get the boys into their right teams. Please be patient with the selection process as we can only grade the boys on what we see. Their attitude and sportsmanship also contribute to the selection process, as we expect very high standards in both these areas when the boys are representing the College.
Wet Weather Procedure
In the event of rainy weather, a notification will be placed on the Villanova College App.
If afternoon training is to be cancelled due to rain evolving during the day, then an alert will be posted via the Villa App by 2.00pm, as well as giving an announcement to the students over the College’s PA system. If training is cancelled during the session, boys at Langland’s will be taken to the undercover carpark at Easts Rugby League Club and boys can be collected from there.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Villanova Cricket Coordinator
Swimming
The 2025 Villanova swimming season is underway. Our dedicated and enthusiastic swim squad have continued to train with their coaches during the holidays with 30 to 40 swimmers in the water each morning. Thank you to all the boys and their parents for supporting the squad and continuing their training. Now that we are back to school, there is the expectation that boys will be training and participating in the Friday carnivals leading up to AIC Championships on 11 March.
Boys are reminded to get to the pool early for each session to check in with the teacher on duty before the training session. We have the Gold squad training at Langlands Pool and the Green squad at the Villanova pool.
Our first meet will be at St Peter’s College (not Yeronga as previously stated) on the 7 February. Buses will take the boys to the meet and will be returning at the completion of the carnival. Parents are welcome to attend and collect the boys from the pool. This meet is open to all members of the Villa squad including the Green squad members. If you are not able to attend the meets, please email me in advance so that we can confirm numbers for the bus. More details about the preparation meets will be published during the coming week as venues, times and bus transport information is confirmed.
Thank you to the swimming staff – coaches Alberto, Nick, Old Boy Dan Walding and Villa staff Terri Dillon, Mel Liddy, Hannah Elder, Julie Colbert, and Lauren Robinson for their ongoing support of the season.
I also wish to offer our congratulations to all our Villanova swimmers who competed at the Queensland State Championships and the Regional Relay Championships in December! Qualifying for the State Championships is an incredible achievement, and we are so proud of the hard work, determination, and sportsmanship shown by our 26 competitors. Villanova medal recipients from the Championships feature in the “External achievements” section of this Newsletter.
Mrs Juanita Jacobs, Swimming Coordinator
Volleyball
It has been a busy time on the court for the Villanova Volleyball program in readiness for the 2025 AIC season. Our trials began in Term 4 of 2024 with a number of internal sessions and two matches vs Iona College and St Laurence’s College. In addition to this, a number of our teams, including the First VI Volleyball Squad, have been hitting the court since the beginning of Term 4.
Our First VI squad partnered with the First VI team from Brisbane Boys College for our pre-season training and preparation and enjoyed taking on Brisbane State High School and Ormiston College in some friendly matches.
Our First VI squad also entered the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup hosted by Volleyball Australia. This tournament was a fantastic opportunity to engage in some match play against opponents from around the country. We know this off-season preparation will be of great benefit to the teams as the season gets closer.
This Saturday we take on St Peters LC in the final trial for the season. Our Senior teams will travel to St Peters and our Junior teams will play at home. Our Junior teams (Year 7-9) are asked to play in their HPE, Squad shirt or House Polo before they collect their hire jerseys next week.
A few reminders about the 2025 AIC Volleyball season:
In closing, I wish all the best to all our AIC teams competing, and an extra special welcome and best wishes to our Year 7 teams who will take to the court for their first official AIC volleyball match next week.
Mr Todd Kropp, Volleyball Coordinator
First XV Rugby
The Villa Rugby preseason is well underway, and our Andrew Slack Squad are hard at work preparing for the challenges of the upcoming season. The dedication and commitment shown by this group of young men is outstanding, as they embrace the high standards and expectations of representing Villanova College.
Our focus in the early stage of the preseason has been on two key areas: strength and conditioning, and core skill development. The players have made excellent progress in these areas, working to ensure they are physically and mentally ready for the demands of the AIC competition.
As we move closer to the start of the competition, we are encouraged by the dedication we have seen in the group. The preseason is about more than just preparing for games – it is also about building a team that exemplifies the Villa DNA: humility, respect, and a love for the game.
Thank you to all the families, coaching staff, and the Villa community who continue to support these players. Your encouragement and belief in their potential drive us to be at our best. We are looking forward to an exciting season as we represent Villanova College with pride and passion.
