Chess Report – Round 4 versus St Edmund’s College
Following a great Co-curricular assembly today, our Chess players were primed for a fabulous afternoon. We were all delighted with Chess Captain Daniel’s speech, full of wisdom and encouragement for his players. When the Eddies squad arrived…it was game on!
After Round 1 there was tension in the air. We had won three divisions and drawn two, so it was hard to predict how Round 2 would go. The lads took the time for a break and some afternoon tea, before regrouping for Round 2.
Not sure whether it was the sausage rolls and party pies, or the choc chip muffins, but Round 2 saw the Villa lads play some of the best matches all season. Congratulations to our Firsts who all won their Round 1 matches, a first for the season! Rumour has it that their lucky socks did the trick!
Fantastic results across the board, Villanova was victorious in five out of five divisions. Well done gents, I congratulate you on a sensational effort! Let’s keep this going Team Villa as we face Padua over on the north side next Friday. Remember to attend all Chess training sessions as this momentum will surely lead to many more victories!
Mrs Kath Underhill, Chess Coordinator
There are different motivators for doing Cross-Country running: it makes us fitter, faster; it increases our endurance; it can change how our body looks; and fundamentally it changes how we feel. We may not identify this as our primary motivation for donning running shoes and heading out the door when it’s raining, but research shows that the way a run makes us feel is the main reason why we should run. The positive effects of running translate into all areas of our lives, not just the time when we’re exercising. Challenge leads to belief, leads to positivity. In brief we can say that running:
For the first time since 2019 the Running Wildcats have been able to race in all scheduled warm-up meets. Many in the squad are juggling multiple sporting commitments and there are a few positions to be filled. We endeavour to reward runners who have made the commitment to training for the duration of the season with a position in the team. A few places are still to be filled in a couple of the age groups, so where more than 12 runners have shown commitment throughout the season in their age group, some may be offered a position to run in an older age group.
Students who have made a considerable effort but miss one of the 12 positions to race in the AIC Championship’s (with a further two students to be named as reserve) will be on hand to support the team on the day.
The full team and reserves will be posted on the sport noticeboard and listed in the sport section of the Villanova College App by lunchtime Friday, 24 May.
In partnership with Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation, Villanova Old Boy Tim Franklin is currently taking on his biggest challenge yet, in a quest to achieve global movement and break down his own barriers by running around the world.
Tim is an ordinary guy, with an extraordinary goal. Run around the world. He is all about owning your life, celebrating successes, and learning from failures.
Members of the Running Wildcats joined Tim as he embarked on his journey on Saturday the 3 December 2022. I invite you now to welcome Tim home as he plans to complete his journey running around the world back where he started at Southbank. Tim is expected to run his final leg on Sunday June 30 2024.

First XI
It was an underwhelming performance by the Villanova First XI this week falling 4 – 0 to SEC. Despite some hopeful moments and creative passages of play the lads struggled to find the consistency needed to break down a well-structured and very organised SEC. The boys now turn their attention to the upcoming fixture against Padua who are just two places above Villanova on the season table, with a potential victory bringing Villanova to within two points in their hunt to move further up the ladder. Please come out to support the First XI this week and get involved in the College spirit for the third last round of the season.
Mr Hudson Rogers, First XI Head Coach
Round 4 Football saw us up against St Edmunds College. After a tough weekend result wise in Round 3 vs SLC, I challenged all players and coaches to turn up against SEC with a positive attitude and to always keep learning from our previous performances. It was extremely pleasing to see the great results against SEC and across our supplementary matches. Overall, we had 14 wins, 10 losses and four draws across the day. Our challenge now is to keep turning up every week, keep listening to the team coaches, play in the right spirit and to always have a positive attitude.
Once again, our Junior teams continue to impress with some great results overall, a special shout out to all Year 5 and 6 coaches and Mrs Mascadri, who have all been making sure that the Junior training sessions and match days are all running smoothly.
This weekend we will be taking on Padua in our Round 5 fixtures. As I mentioned last week – could I please remind all parents and players to check the draw carefully for game times and venues. I would once again like to remind all players about arriving at least 30 minutes before your game. There were still several situations on the weekend where players arrived just before kick-off, this makes it extremely tough for coaches to plan for the game and it also puts a lot of unwanted pressure on your teammates.
Our Years 5-8 Football teams are playing at home at Villa Park, the Years 9-Opens Football teams will be playing away at Padua.
Good luck to all the players and coaches this week in your matches.

First XV
A win is a win would perhaps be the best way to sum up the First XV performance on the weekend against a spirited and determined St Edmund’s side who had a mission of spoiling our perfect aggregate record in rugby across the day.
Unfortunately, our team couldn’t get into the groove of our style and shape of play and costly errors in defence gave the Eddies side a sniff of victory which they almost took.
Fortunately, our First XV found enough fortitude to be ahead on the scoreline when the fulltime whistle blew to record a one-point victory.
Amid the frustration of the playing and coaching group, there were some very pleasing aspects of play including our set piece and hunting for the ball which was not rewarded. Captain courageous Jackson Connor played his heart out to be awarded the Daly Medal for best Villa player on ground by the opposition.
The focus of the team this week is to play to our strengths and construct a gameplan designed to spoil Padua and secure a famous away victory at Banyo. The coaching group is confident that if all squad members play to their potential, the quality of our attack and defence will realise our best performance of the season.
Mr Matt Levander, First XV Assistant Coach
Our results on Saturday, suggest that we are improving each week and that we should be ready to take on Padua and Iona in the next two rounds with more confidence. Villa won 18 out of the 24 games played in round four and were victorious in all 13 matches played against spirited St. Edmund’s sides.
The 1sts fought out a tough win by one point, while the 7As recorded their first win of the season and the Year 10s continued their winning ways. With a tough round coming up against Padua this Saturday, we will need to be focussed from the opening whistle and play out the full game and not rest up as Padua will keep coming at our teams. It seems both Colleges are quite evenly matched in the opens, year eight and seven, while on paper Villa might dominate the year nines and tens, but they are playing away.
We have been lucky with the draw this year, with a number of home games and now we revert to the usual split round with the older boys (Year 9- open) playing Padua at Banyo and the younger boys (Year 5-8) playing at Villanova Park.
Good luck to all coaches and players this Saturday, prepare well at training and hit the ground running when you run on the field on Saturday.
Mr Chris Everding, Rugby Coordinator
The first XV Rugby Union team has been relentless in their pursuit of victory this season. Despite facing adversity and enduring setbacks, their dedication and hard work is not going unnoticed. The boys’ resilience has been on full display, holding strong until the final whistle in every match. Their perseverance is a testament to the rigorous pre-season training regimen of three weekly gym sessions, where they honed their fitness and strength to peak levels.
In-season training is helping the Rugby boys to maintain their physical conditions to the best possible standards.
Our Long-Term Athletic Development program continues to thrive, with a remarkable cohort of students showing unparalleled enthusiasm and dedication. It is inspiring to witness students from all year levels, including Year 7, eagerly participating in early morning sessions. Their passion for learning and improving is truly commendable. Recently, the focus has been on mastering the mechanics and techniques of fundamental movements such as squats, and hinges. The boys work together, learning to watch out for mistakes and correct one another (see pic) improving understanding of the movement.
Through dedicated practice and guidance, students are refining their skills and laying the groundwork for future success. Their commitment to growth and development sets a shining example for the entire school community.
Refer to the Locker Room Overview page for the Term 2 Training Schedule, which includes the S&C schedule. Students attending LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) sessions do not need to register prior to attending. Just arrive with your towel and water bottle.
Mr Marco Mastrorocco, Strength & Conditioning Coordinator
Term 2 registrations are now closed. Information regarding the Term 3 programme will be available soon.
On April 19, nine students from Villanova College proudly represented the College at the Rocky Trail Academy MTB event. Brisbane turned on the weather, with close to 400 participants from 46 schools, it was a spectacular day ready for racing. The event featured three tracks, each offering its own challenges — some with fast turns and impressive jumps, others presented more rugged cross-country terrain. All riders had the opportunity to attempt each track up to five times, with their best time for each track recorded.
While we didn’t have any podium finishes this time, our boys performed admirably with several placing in the top third of riders. Their performance was a remarkable achievement, especially considering for most it was their first Rocky Trail MTB event. Equally commendable was the conduct displayed by each student, as they managed their time, nutrition, and lent support to one another throughout the day.
We extend our gratitude to the Villa Sports Department for making it possible for us to participate in this event. A special thanks is due to Mr McLauchlan for his support and dedication to the boys, taking the time to offer guidance, engage in conversation, and as our unofficial photographer. We are also immensely grateful to the many parents who contributed to the organisation and success of the day. And always remember, kids Sport is meant to be fun…
