Chess Report – Round 2 against St Patrick’s College
Thanks to the foresight of our auspicious Sports Director, our Chess players had an early release to catch a bus bound for Shorncliffe. Not knowing what was ahead, this proved to be a very eventful afternoon!
By the end of Round One, the scores were fairly even between the schools. Our Firsts and Senior teams faced some very stiff competition, with some very close matches. A huge shout-out to Adam Kielenniva, Matt Sondergeld, Jack Neate and Nick Sheahan for winning both their matches and for Dan Walding and Jia Lin for great comebacks in winning their round 2 matches. Well done Senior Teams!
Our incredible Intermediate and Junior A and B teams displayed great prowess in outstanding style and domination, Intermediates winning, (12-4) and (10-6) and Juniors 11-5 and 14-2! Worthy of note are the amazing Intermediates Damian Ellis and Cooper Le, and in Junior division Fred Currie and Carter Stiling (both Year 5), for incredible wins.
We look forward to hosting and winning against St Laurence’s here at Villanova this Friday. Reminder to all Chess players that we have photos from 3:15 – 3:30, so please be sure to be neatly dressed and on time.
Mrs Kath Underhill, Chess Coordinator
Dedication to training, effort and positive conduct are the characteristics of the students currently training with the cross-country squad. Although, the level of participation has been good further runners in the Under 15 and 16 age groups would benefit the squad. Thus, I challenge boys in those age groups, especially students fit from playing other sports to speak to either myself or Mr Roache about how you could get involved.
There have been many great runs at training thus far which develops the perseverance, consistency and hard work ethic of the members of the Cross-Country squad. I look forward to the effort being rewarded with many of the Running Wildcats given the opportunity to show how great they are and run at their best in the warm-up meets and the AIC Championships.
On Monday 22 April several members of the Cross-Country squad competed in the Composite District regional trials at the BSHS sporting grounds. Congratulations to all boys who competed bravely for Villa, the top 10 runners are selected to compete at the Metropolitan East trials.
Mr Brian Pascoe, Cross-Country Coordinator
Round 2 of AIC Football saw us up against SPC. Our Villanova sides performed well in the second round of the season. At the end of the day, we had a total of nine wins, four draws and 15 losses. In what has been a chaotic start to football season it was great to see our teams respond positively after a tough Round 1 vs Ashgrove, once again – it was great to see our Year 5 and 6 teams really enjoying themselves out at Curlew Park and playing with great spirit.
We will be taking on very strong opposition in Laurie’s this weekend in our Round 3 fixtures. Could I please remind all parents and players to check the draw carefully this week for game times and venues. Our Years 9-Opens teams playing at home at Villa Park will also have ‘team photos’ this Saturday, please check the newsletter this week for the team photo schedule. Our Junior teams will be playing away at Runcorn.
I would like to remind all players about the importance of training to the best of their ability and ensuring that what is practised at training filters into the game. There were several close games last weekend and if players continue to put in the hard work, hopefully we can continue to see positive results for Villanova Football! In addition, please ensure that if you are absent from training that you contact your coach prior to training, so that the coaches can plan effectively and get the most out of training sessions.
Good luck to all the players and coaches this week in your matches against Laurie’s.
Years 5-8 Football Junior Football Coordinator – Mrs Maria Mascadri, mmascadri@vnc.qld.edu.au
Years 9-Opens Football Coordinator – Mr Nathan Dufty, ndufty@vnc.qld.edu.au
Mr Nathan Dufty, Football Coordinator
Our Rugby teams will head into Round 3 against St Laurence’s College this weekend with a lot more confidence after a successful round against St Patrick’s College last Saturday. Villa only went down in two games against St. Patrick’s and both games were very closely contested. Congratulations to our 1st XV, who won a close match 32-31 with both sides unsure of the winner until after full time due to calculation errors. Euphoric scenes followed with confirmation of the win and our boys will be looking to upset the reigning premiers when they do battle on Andrew Slack Oval at 3.15pm this Saturday.
It is a rare opportunity, but we have every Rugby team in the College at Villa Park this week. It will give everyone a great opportunity to get out and support not just your son’s team but ALL Villa teams. I have no doubt that these are the places where we build community spirit and how awesome would it be for all of our players to stay back and support the First Rugby team and for our boys to a part of something big. It is also Old Boys day at the park, where we invite our Old Boys to head back to Villa Park to catch up with each other and share stories.
NO DOGS are allowed at Villanova Park. It is an AIC and College policy, that no dogs are allowed at Villanova Park. Can parents please organise different arrangements, if you cannot leave your dog at home. There were numerous dogs during the Round 1 clash against Marist College Ashgrove and we have no doubt that there were quite a few from the other College. It will save our staff having an uncomfortable conversation with those who do not want to follow the rules.
Mr Chris Everding, Rugby Coordinator
On Wednesday 1 May, Villa competed in the QAFL Primary Schools Cup Gala Day at Coorparoo AFC. The entire team played with determination and skill throughout the entire day. Their improvement from the first game until the last was almost unbelievable! In the round games we defeated Nudgee College 33-19, Coorparoo State School 63–1 and Norman Park State School 63–0. The team capped off a very successful day by defeating Nudgee College again in the final 63–0.
The highlight was not the comprehensive victories, but the way the entire team represented the College. They displayed outstanding sportsmanship, support for one another, and they listened to and applied the advice given to them by their coaches. All these attributes are why we play sport here at the College.
Congratulations to Jude Thompson, our Captain, who led by example and was awarded the Player of the Day for his outstanding efforts. Also, thanks to Charlie Corrigan and Isaac Solomon (2023 Old Boys) who assisted with coaching the team. Their expertise and advice were certainly appreciated by the boys.
The next round of the competition is in July and if successful there, we will have the opportunity to defend our 2023 State Title in October at Maroochydore.
Refer to the Locker Room Overview page for the Term 2 Training Schedule, which includes the S&C schedule. Students attending LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) sessions do not need to register prior to attending. Just turn up with your towel and water bottle.
