Cross-Country
The cross-country training for the ‘Running Wildcats’ has had a very positive start for those runners who have been training attacking the Veritas stairs when the fields were shut due to rain.
I strongly encourage each member of the squad to continue training through the Easter holidays to maintain the fitness developed through some outstanding training during the latter stages of Term 1.
The AIC Cross-Country Championships are scheduled for Wednesday the 29th of May, at St Patrick’s College sporting fields, Curlew Park, Sandgate, so the time to prepare is now.
There have been a number of students who have uploaded the Strava app. I encourage further members of the cross-country squad to download the free app and join the club. Although, the Strava app works better on fitness trackers and smart watches it is also very effective with any smart phone. However, you will need to carry your phone (arm brace preferable) when running to get maximum benefit from the app.
Strava is a free digital service accessible through both mobile applications and the web. Many students have been uploading runs regularly, following other athletes, giving them kudos and comments, joining clubs and challenges. It is a good way of following the training of your fellow ‘Running Wildcats’.
It is a closed club so to join the squad on Strava please join Strava and request access to the Running Wildcats Cross Country Squad 2024.

We look forward to having each runner in the team, become the best runner he can be. Dedication to training especially when no one is watching, is a key habit that enable a team, and an individual, to grow in character.
Mr Brian Pascoe, Cross-Country Coordinator
It was great to see plenty of Football action at Villanova Park last Saturday, there is a real excitement about the season ahead with us entering a strong number of teams across all year groups into the upcoming AIC Football season.
Last Saturday was a great opportunity for coaches to continue to evaluate each students “skill sets” while also finally seeing them in match play/scenarios. As we now have a well-earned break over the holidays, I kindly remind all parents and students to check the following important dates below.
If parents or students have any questions about Football, please contact the following people.
Years 5-8 Football
Junior Football Coordinator – Ms. Maria Mascadri mmascadri@vnc.qld.edu.au
Years 9-Opens Football
Football Coordinator – Mr Nathan Dufty ndufty@vnc.qld.edu.au
Wishing all families a safe Easter holiday break.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Football Coordinator
The wet weather has unfortunately kicked in at the wrong time for all players and coaches and has interrupted our selection trials. With only a few sessions available to have a look at the boys, we will not select any trial teams until after the holidays. Please be aware that ALL boys will make a team and all coaches will be looking at the boys first week back next term at training and at the Iona trial on April 20th.
Players will move around from team to team, as they train together and play at the same venue every week. All players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and regardless of their initial team selection, will be asked to change teams depending on their attendance at training, their attitude and how they interact with their teammates. Any negative behaviour at training or on the field will result in players jeopardising their place in a side.
For new Year 5 parents, this trial process will take will a period of time before coaches settle on teams. We know that many boys may have played at a club for up to 5 years already, but none of those clubs do any grading and our coaches are experienced enough to have a good idea of the ability levels of the boys. We ask you to be mindful of the process and know that we will be moving boys around. If your son is selected in a team and he believes that he should be in a higher grade, our role as parents is to encourage him to go out and be noticed, if he wants an opportunity in a higher grade.
We ask that all players stay behind and sit on the bench after each game next term. Last year many boys played their game and then headed off, leaving the following team short of reserves and most importantly, support. It is also important that all players from Year 5 to the 1st XV leave their space clean after games. It should not be the responsibility of the Villanova Park Groundsmen or representative of Colleges that we visit, to clean up after our boys. Unfortunately, this was an issue last year and we would like everyone to leave their space clean and tidy after they finish.
Over the holidays, there is a rugby camp for our Andrew Slack squad at the North Coast and Villanova will also be represented at the Ballymore Cup in the U18 Div 2, U15 Div 1 and U13 Div 1 competitions at Albany Creek Sports Ground. We wish all the boys and families participating the best of success and we’d like to thank the coaches for taking the time to develop our boys during the Easter vacation.
On April the 20th all Year 5 to 8 teams will play at Iona College, while the Year 9 to Open teams will play at Villanova Park. Team lists for the Iona trial should be posted by Thursday 18th April after the boys have had an opportunity to train on the Tuesday.
Please note we are still looking for a Year 9 Rugby coach. Contact ceverding@vnc.qld.edu.au if you can help.
Mr Chris Everding, Rugby Coordinator
The Villa Gym is available to all students in Years 7-12 over the Easter holidays. All sessions are 6:30-8am. Boys are asked to bring a towel and water bottle to each session. See dates below:
These sessions will be a great opportunity for our athletes to do some deload work and stay sharp over the break, as well for those in the LTAD program wishing to stay active during the holidays. Please note that there won’t be a session on Monday April 1st due to Easter Monday.
Mr Marco Mastrorocco, Strength & Conditioning Coordinator
The final Speed & Agility session for Term 1 was held on Monday morning 25 March.
Term 2 registrations are now available. See details and flyer below for Term 2. Note sessions will move to Friday mornings, from Weeks 2-9, commencing on Friday 26th April and concluding on Friday 14 June.
Speed & Agility sessions teach technique, change of direction and speed work to excel in your chosen sport.
