Following a long and arduous pre-season, our Swimmers are poised and ready to take on the AIC Championships this Tuesday 5 March. On behalf of the Villanova community, I wish all students well as they strive for personal best efforts on Tuesday. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Juanita Jacobs, Terri Dillon, Theresa Henry and Melissa Liddy for their tireless work behind the scenes, and our Head Swim Coaches Felipe and Nick.
Congratulations to our First VI Volleyball team who remain undefeated after four rounds of competition. Trailing a set early against St Edmund’s College last weekend was a poignant reminder that each and every week is like a grand final match. Our boys now focus on Round 5 versus Padua College this Saturday.
Please note, Trimester 2 Sport registrations are now open for Chess, Cross-Country, Football and Rugby Union. More information is provided below.

Mr Shaun McLean, Director of Sport
An excellent round of AFL against St Edmund’s College for the 1st XVIII AFL Team.
The first half was close with St Edmunds ahead at quarter time. In close games, effective use of the football is crucial. An important factor in developing a successful team is to encourage each player in the team to consider in your actions making your mate, ‘Best on Ground.’ When using the football this could include;
I challenge each player to apply these actions to their game, especially when the scores are close. Ensuring that you make your mate, ‘Best on Ground.’
A mindset of making your mate ‘Best on Ground,’ was key to a second half that saw the Leaping Wildcats score 7 goals to 3 through the second half against St Edmund’s College. This Friday the Leaping Wildcats play their final home game for the year against Padua College at Coorparoo AFC at 4.45 pm.
Mr Brian Pascoe, First XVIII Head Coach
With St. Edmund’s College having a small number of cricket teams, many of our sides came up against a variety of other Colleges who filled in the vacant spots last Saturday. Ambrose Treacy College lined up in many of the supplementary games but there were also matches against Marist, Padua, Iona and St. Laurence’s College.
Congratulations to Caeden Ford (8A), who scored a century in his first outing on Andrew Slack Oval. This was a mighty effort, as he carried his bat through the innings and scored 118 came off 95 balls and he was instrumental in helping the team score 2/228 runs and post a solid victory against St. Edmund’s. Well done Caeden!
Congratulations to all players for your efforts so far this season. We are now heading into the final three games, and it is still extremely important to attend all training sessions and to do your best on Saturdays. We have had a tough draw facing Marist and SPC in round one and two and if we are going to be a real chance of retaining the aggregate shield, then we’ll need to play well and have a good round against Padua this Saturday and Iona next week. Current tables suggest we have slipped to fourth place but with some solid performances, we can push the top teams and finish off strongly.
Coaches have mentioned that there has been an increasing number of clashes with football club trials and swimming club trials and parents are allowing their son’s to miss cricket games, and it has been putting teams under pressure to cover for the player losses on weekends. Some teams end up playing short and this can be very frustrating for coaches and families. In signing on you have committed your son to a team and outside sporting clashes should be avoided. Please contact the Sport Office as your first point of call before notifying coaches.
Mr Chris Everding, Cricket Coordinator
1st XI Cricket
Our First XI team were on the road last Saturday against SEC at Tivoli. I was confident that the 1st XI team were ready to put in a strong performance against SEC, due to missing out on playing any Cricket from the previous weekend.
Villanova won the toss and decided to bowl on a pitch that looked to offer something as well as the intermittent consistent showers at the venue. Our bowling innings started brilliantly again with Henrik Frederiksen (1-8) consistently beating the bat with his pace against the SEC top order. Joey Watson (1-8) then bowled with great consistency while Lachlan Whaites (1-7) was bamboozling the SEC batters with his terrific spell of outswing bowling. The pick of the bowlers on the day was Ned Godwin, who bowled brilliantly to clean up the SEC batting lineup to finish with figures of 4-9 of his 6 overs, which resulted in us bowling out SEC for a total of 68.
Chasing small totals can be tricky, and this was certainly the case with us losing Zac Joyce and Oliver Chalmers early to have us in trouble at 2-13. Mitchell Francis (24no) and Captain Finn Thallon (26no) then put on a valuable fourth wicket partnership to steer us home with only three wickets lost in the run chase.
The team focus now turns to the RD5 match up against Padua, who are always tough to beat – so the team will need to keep on improving and stay focused on playing our “positive brand” of cricket.
Good luck to all Villanova sporting teams in Round 5.
Mr Nathan Dufty, First XI Head Coach
As I write this newsletter item, a number of our swimmers are at Chandler competing in the Met East trials. I use Meet Mobile to track the times of our swimmers at official events such as this, and I am seeing some great times coming through. It is always good to see our boys challenge themselves in their sport and to compete against the best swimmers from other schools. Although swimming is often considered an individual sport, where the athlete will work to produce a personal best time with each and every race, the support and camaraderie from all members of the squad goes a long way to improving performances.
I have seen this support each week at our meets, and at training. Lewis Levine impressed me by walking beside Bede McLellan while he practiced his 15m start at training. He was cheering Bede along and then at the end, congratulated him. I saw him doing the same thing this morning with another Year 5 swimmer Michael. It is this attitude and respect for others in the pool, your teammates, which makes the early morning training, and the competition meets worthwhile. Lewis may not be the fastest swimmer in Year 5, but he is very much a valued member of the team whose attitude and commitment lifts others. There have been other incidents of this happening throughout the season, by other boys and I am so grateful to the swimmers for their encouragement of each other and the support they show. As Dan said in his address last week, winning a race may make everything more fun, but it isn’t the most important part of being in the squad.
Thursday night last week was our final preparation meet held at the Chandler pool. It was a great turn out from the squad and the last chance that some of our boys had to record times to confirm places in the swim squad. The team list and their events will be finalised after the Met East times are collated. We look forward to each of the boys performing their best at the AIC Championships next week, either in the pool swimming or supporting the squad and helping.
Next Tuesday 5 March, our swim squad will showcase their talents at Chandler, supported by the Year 11 cohort. They have trained since October last year. For the Year 12 students, it will be their final time representing Villanova in the swim squad. I wish to thank them for their assistance and continued dedication to the Villa squad. Enjoy your last AIC carnival. Daniel Walding and Ben Crawford as our Squad Captain and Senior School Vice-Captain have shown humble leadership and service to the squad. Congratulations to both of them as they lead the squad with the assistance of Ben Landers, Tyler Schafer and Lachie Rees on pool deck.
I look forward to reporting on our results in the pool next week. Congratulations to each member of the squad, they have spent six months training for an event that can take less than 30 seconds! We will be back in the water in Term 4 to get ready for 2025.
Mrs Juanita Jacobs, Swimming Coordinator
Another great week on the court for our Volleyball teams. I once again would like to thank the volleyball community for making our Saturday rounds possible, especially this past week for those who travelled to Ipswich. Whilst we recorded a number of wins and losses, the Villa program nudged their nose in front and took the ‘overall’ result for the day.
The success for our First IV team also continued with 3 sets to 1 win over a well-drilled St Edmunds team. The First team was presented some challenges throughout this match, the SEC attacking options caused some challenge for our defence and serving in the new venue also proved to be a big ask. With those things said, the boys performance carried through to a victory and they will be hard at work as they prepare to avenge the trial result in their next match v Padua. Special mention to First coach Shania who took the team solo!
This Saturday v Padua sees our Senior (10-12) teams playing at home and our Junior teams travelling to Padua – as always, the draw is available via the Locker Room page.
Our 10-12 teams will also be responsible for Court Duty this weekend whilst playing at home. This schedule can be found below.

Albert Einstein once stated,” “Chess holds its master in its own bonds, shaking the mind and brain so that the inner freedom of the very strongest must suffer.”
Tuesday morning saw the launch of our 2024 Chess Program. 14 promising Chess players from years 7-12 gathered to begin their training to secure a spot in the Villanova Firsts team.
Junior School
This week we will be launching a Chess Club on Thursdays at second break for students in year 5 and 6 who can play chess. This will take place in ST 9 and 10. This is a time for us to trial all Chess players and form our Junior A, B and C teams. Please email me at kunderhill@vnc.qld.edu.au to confirm your son will come along to these sessions. Selection for the teams will not just be according to skill level, but consistent attendance and sportsmanship will be major factors. This training time will change next term when the season begins. I would highly recommend you register your son at www.chess.com, where he can practise his Chess moves and see improvement in his skill level.
Students in Years 7-10 stay tuned for news on when training will begin for you in week 7!
Looking forward to a fabulous year of Chess.

A reminder that the training for the Villanova Cross-Country Squad including the Junior, Middle and Senior School runners begins this
Tuesday 5 March (AIC Swimmers do not need to attend).

Collection Notice for parents/guardians
2024 Student Residential Address and Other Information
The Australian Government Department of Education (the department) would like to notify you that we have requested for your child’s school to provide residential address and other information. Under the Australian Education Regulations 2023, the school is required to provide the department with the following information about each student at the school:
– names and residential addresses of the student’s parent(s) and/or guardian(s)
– student residential address (excluding student names)
– whether the student is a primary or secondary student (education level)
– whether the student is boarding or a day student (boarding status).
The school collects the above information by generating a unique and unidentifiable student reference number (SRN) for each student record. The school only uses the SRN for this collection. The SRN cannot be used for any other purpose. The number only indicates to the department that each record provided is for one student.
Purpose of the collection
The Student Residential Address and Other Information Collection (the collection) informs Australian Government school education policy and helps ensure funding for non-government schools is based on need. The information collected is used to inform school funding calculations. It is combined with Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data to calculate a non-government school community’s anticipated capacity to contribute to schooling costs.
In 2020, the department introduced a new measure of capacity to contribute: the Direct Measure of Income (DMI). The DMI is based on the median income of non-government school students’ parents or guardians using the collection data. For more information see Direct Measure of Income (DMI) Methodology.
