Basketball – 2024 Season Review
As Villanova College wraps up a spectacular AIC Basketball season, the school community is buzzing with excitement and pride. The season concluded with an exhilarating series of matches against
St Peter’s Lutheran College, marking the end of a highly successful year for Villanova’s basketball program.
A Season of Triumph
This year has been nothing short of extraordinary for Villanova College’s basketball program. With over 300 players from Year 5 to Year 12 and 31 teams competing across various age groups,
the program has been a vibrant showcase of talent and dedication. The hard work and commitment of these players have been rewarded with an impressive 13 premierships, underscoring Villanova’s dominance in the AIC competition.
The Colours Cup: A Groundbreaking Initiative
A major highlight of this season was the launch of the Colours Cup, an innovative competition designed specifically for junior and middle school boys. This inaugural event, led by Sports Club President Mr. Warren, has provided younger players with a unique opportunity to further develop their skills and experience competitive play. The Colours Cup has been a resounding success, offering a valuable platform for emerging talent and enhancing the overall basketball experience at Villanova.
Acknowledging Contributions
The success of Villanova’s basketball program is the result of countless hours of effort from students, staff, and coaches. A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who has contributed to this successful season.
Special thanks to the Sports Office, including Director of Sport Mr. McLean, Mr. Everding, Mr. Kropp, and Mr. Dufty, for their tireless support and dedication.
First V Premiership
Congratulations are in order for the First V Basketball team, which has achieved an impressive fourth consecutive undefeated AIC premiership. The boys throughout the year showcased their skill, discipline and willingness to push through every challenge and obstacle and all of these young men have continued to build upon the foundation set by Villanova Old Boys before them. This remarkable accomplishment could not have been achieved without the steadfast support of Mr. Rouhliadeff, Mr. Korst, Mr. Warren, Mr. Collins, and Mr. Rowland. Their commitment and expertise have been instrumental in guiding the team to success.
Looking Ahead: State Championship Preparation
As the season concludes, Villanova’s basketball program is gearing up for the next challenge. The First V team, along with select teams from Year 9/10 and Year 7/8, will soon head to the Champion Basketball School Queensland on the Gold Coast. There, they will compete against some of the best schools in Queensland for the State Championship. This upcoming event promises to be an exciting opportunity for Villanova’s talented players to showcase their skills on a larger stage and vie for state-level honors.
In summary, Villanova College’s basketball season has been marked by significant achievements, innovative initiatives, and a strong sense of community. As the program prepares for the State Championship, the school community can look back with pride on a year of triumph and forward with anticipation to the challenges and opportunities ahead. With continued dedication and support, Villanova’s basketball program is well-positioned to build on its success and continue to excel in the future.
Mr Jordan Mullan, First V Head Coach & Basketball Coordinator
Rugby League – 2024 Season Review
The 2024 Rugby League season at Villanova College was the largest in the program’s history, with a record number of teams and coaching staff, underscoring the growth and progress of the sport within the College.
With tremendous effort and dedication across all teams, Villanova secured 5th place in the overall AIC aggregate, achieving a 38.36% win rate across 73 games, reflecting the competitive spirit and determination of our players.
Under the leadership of Mr. Michael Cahill, along with 1st XIII captains Jackson C and Roman D, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience, securing a 3rd place overall finish, with a standout moment being their thrilling
24-22 comeback victory over Padua College.
The 2nd XIII team also had a strong showing, finishing 4th, with standout performances such as a 32-6 win in round 7 and a dominant 34-0 victory over St. Patrick’s College (SPC). The 10A team mirrored this success,
finishing 4th as well, with a notable 34-16 win over Ambrose Treacy College (ATC).
The 9A team delivered an excellent season, securing 4th place overall with impressive wins, including a 40-6 triumph in round 2 and a 30-0 victory against ATC. The 8A team overcame early season challenges to dominate St. Laurence’s College 46-10 in round 3, demonstrating their growth and determination.
In the younger divisions, the 7A team faced tough competition but showed their potential with a 26-18 win against St. Edmund’s College (SEC). The 7B team earned a 5th place finish, highlighted by a 46-4 victory over SPC.
The 6A and 6B teams put in strong performances, with notable victories such as the 6A’s 36-0 win over SEC and the 6B’s 38-6 triumph against SEC. The 5A and 5B teams ended their seasons on a high note,
with the 5A securing a hard-fought 12-8 win over ATC, and the 5B claiming a 28-16 victory over SPC.
Across all teams, Villanova players scored a combined total of 1,004 points, showcasing their offensive strength and teamwork. As Rugby League enters its sixth year at the College, the program continues to grow,
and our players are fully embracing the tradition and passion of the sport.
A heartfelt thank you goes to all the players, staff, and supporters who contributed to the success of the 2024 season. Your dedication made this season possible, and we look forward to seeing everyone back in the green and gold in 2025.
Mr Alex Russell, Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis – 2024 Season Review
AIC Tennis First IV vs St Peter’s
Taking on an undefeated St Peter’s team gunning for the First IV Premiership was always going to be a tough challenge for the boys. This proved to be the case, with our First IV going down 8-0.
Standout performers were our Captain Oliver Simmons and Reuben Wagels, both with going down valiantly in excellent singles performances. While overall the result wasn’t what we were hoping for,
the whole team fought incredibly hard in both singles and doubles, just as they have done all year.
Prior to commencing the season, we knew that the competition across the schools was incredibly even. This meant that no win was going to come easy, but also that every tie was winnable. The boys started with a tough loss, going down 6-2 to against eventual runners up Ashgrove. Round 2 saw our most important victory of the season against St Patrick’s. Down 4-2 with two singles matches to play, outstanding victories by our Captain Oliver Simmons 6-4, 6-1 and number 1 player Reuben Wagels 6-0, 6-0 led to a victory on games, 50-45. This started a run of victories for the team, dominating St Laurence’s and St Edmund’s to set up a 3-1 start to the season. With Ben Bingham out due to illness, Christian Jones made his debut for the First IV against Padua. While that tie didn’t go our way, we knew that victory against Iona the following week would secure a top three finish. The boys regrouped to put together our most polished performance of the season, defeating Iona 5-3.
While the season ended with a loss to St Peter’s, our 3rd place finish was Villanova’s best in First IV Tennis since 2015. This result was reward for the hard work and dedication of the entire squad led by our departing Captain and three year First IV representative Oliver Simmons. His contribution to the tennis program over many years and his maturity as the leader of the team this year will be a legacy of his at the College. With Reuben Wagels, Ben Bingham and Luke Phillips all available again next season, and our new tennis development squad implemented this year to help grow future First IV players, we hope results like those from this season become sustainable into the future.
Special thank you to Villanova Tennis Coordinator, Nathan Dufty and our Head Coach, Darren Blade, their hard work, planning, and tactical acumen were crucial in our success this year and will be in the years to come as we strive for greater success. From a personal perspective, it has been a privilege working with Nathan, Darren and this group of fine young men who are excellent ambassadors for the College, both on and off the court.
Mr Justin Musumeci, First IV Manager
2024 Tennis Season
A big congratulations go to all the Tennis players from Years 5-12 on such a fun and fantastic season. The 2024 season saw an array of tennis talent coming from all AIC schools in various age groups making the competition across the board very competitive. Being my second season as Tennis Coordinator, I was able to lean on my experience from the previous season and implement new ideas to the overall program, to make sure that it continues to develop across all year levels.
I was very impressed with the commitment and attitude of our players but most importantly, extremely proud of how our players and managers conducted themselves across the entire 2024 season.
As always good results don’t come easily. Our pre-season commenced way back in late March with 12 of our best players in the College invited into the “Firsts Tennis Squad Program” whereby these top players would train every Tuesday and
Thursday evening for 12 consecutive weeks leading into the Tennis season. Towards the end of term 2 we began preparing for the AIC Season with year level trials and training beginning for the remainder of the Villa tennis players.
From the 16 teams submitted into the AIC Tennis competition, we showed that we were competitive across the season and always showed that Villanova spirit of fighting till the very end. Across the 2024 season, 7 of our teams had top 4 finishes, plus to top it off – our 7A team secured an undefeated premiership, the Tennis that the 7A team displayed on the court across the season was of the highest quality, Manager Mr. Adam Zanatta, and all the year 7 students should be extremely proud of their fabulous achievements.
Villanova placed 4th in the AIC Tennis aggregate for 2024, I’m very proud of this result which is a huge improvement from our 7th place finish in 2023, I’m sure that all returning players will take a lot out of the 2024 season and make sure that Villanova Tennis continues to make a positive movement in AIC tennis for 2025 and beyond.
Overall, our 1st IV team came 3rd securing 4 wins and 3 losses over the season. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank our departing First IV Captain Oliver Simmons for not only his performance on court, but for being a true advocate for Villa tennis by being a superb mentor/leader. Oliver was in regular communication with me across the season about how he can assist and improve the overall program, his passion for the sport overall really shone through and has laid a strong foundation for others to follow. Oliver was always a pleasure to watch on the court, his grit and determination to never give up on a rally being his greatest asset. We will also keep a careful watch on current First players Rueben Wagels, Benjamin Bingham, Luke Phillips as they continue to improve their skillset, I’ve got no doubt that Villanova Tennis will be a strong force in the AIC Tennis competition in 2025.
It was another great season for our Junior School Tennis players having recorded several wins on the court during the season. It was so refreshing to see the boys train hard throughout the entire season, plus come out each week and show their true passion for the game. A special mention must go to Ms. Maria Mascadri for all her dedication and commitment to our Junior Tennis program, she provides such a positive and professional environment for all the junior students, which always sets the tone for students to continue in the sport from Year 7 and beyond.
This season we were able to reestablish the ‘Villanova Age Championships’ which were held on a Sunday early in Term 3, it was great to see so many students register and support the Age Championship’s. I’d like to acknowledge
Year 6 student, Jacob Shipton on being named Junior Age Champion, Year 7 student Jacob Aldenton on being named Middle-Aged Champion, and Year 10 student Rueben Wagels on being named Senior Age champion.
In closing this report, I must sincerely thank all coaches and managers including Mr. Darren Blade, Mr. Justin Musumeci, Mr. Liam Johnston, Mr. Sam Simmons, Ms. Amanda Waterson, Mr. Nico Vega, Mr. Adam Zanatta, and Ms. Maria Mascadri for all their time and effort given throughout the entire season. A great group of people who did a fantastic job in looking after their respective teams, they were so supportive of the entire program, while always wanting the very best for the students. A special mention also goes Mr Damien Roberts and the entire coaching team at “Tennis gear Morningside” for their assistance in getting our Tennis program on the court.
Finally, I would like to thank the players once again for their commitment given, and a special mention to all our ‘departing year 12 players’ for their commitment to the Villanova Tennis community over many years.
Congratulations again to everyone involved on such a fun and fantastic season, I certainly do look forward to hitting the courts again in 2025!
Mr Nathan Dufty, Tennis Coordinator

Villanova’s 2024 AIC Track and Field Team are very much looking forward to competing at the annual AIC Track and Field Championships which will be held on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th October
at the Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre (QSAC).
The team’s preparation has been encouraging and we are looking forward to a successful carnival. Unfortunately, not everyone who has trained will get the chance to compete on Thursday and Friday.
However, we believe that all those who have trained are important members of the 2024 AIC Track and Field Team, therefore all squad members who have trained throughout the season are invited to
attend the carnival with the competing team as a spectator/reserve.
A final team list will be posted in the Parent Lounge and Student Cafe portals. Simply log in as normal to these portals. Select the ‘Links’ tab from the top tool bar. From the drop-down menu, select the
‘Team Lists & Weekly Schedule’ tab to view the documents. On Day 1, only competing athletes and reserves for the events scheduled, will attend QSAC. All team members and reserves listed are invited to
attend the carnival on Day 2. We would like all athletes and reserves to attend Day 2 (even though they may have had their event on Day 1) as we are keen for all boys to be present for the photo in the morning
and to support the team on the major day of competition.
The Track & Field Team photo (all athletes and reserves) will be taken in quadrangle at Villanova College at 6:45am sharp. Boys need to arrive by 6:30am,
photo at 6:45am then on the buses by 7am. Boys who arrive late, after 6:45am, will miss the photo.
Please find some information below regarding the event schedule, bus departure times, uniform requirements etc. Although parents may attend the event it is a requirement that all student athletes on both days arrive at the College and use the bus service provided to the venue. This is to ensure the staff account for all boys and the entire team is present for photos. Parents may collect their son from the venue if they are in attendance and sign them out with a Villanova staff member.
