Mr Shaun McLean, Director of Sport
Round 5 was a successful one for Villanova Basketball with 26 wins from 31 matches versus Padua College.
A special mention to our Seniors playing their final home games this weekend against Iona College. Also, to our First V who are playing the (potential) premiership match on Saturday.
Please note Years 5-6 Junior Basketball games this week are played on Thursday afternoon 29 August due to the pupil free day on Friday.
Mr Jordan Mullan, First V Head Coach & Basketball Coordinator
After Saturday, it was obvious that winter is no more! It was a heated clash in every sense of the word on Saturday as Villanova took on a very tough Padua side. With some mixed results on the scoreboard, it was again another great collection of Rugby League matches.
A special mention to our First XIII Rugby League team who recorded another win for the season by edging out the strong Padua side by 2 points and finishing the match 24-22 up. Well done, gents! This weekend will also be the last match for our First team who finish on the bye for round 7. We wish the team all the best in their final sporting fixture for Villanova College.
It will be yet another tough ask for our teams as they take on Iona College in what always proves to be a competitive day. Fuelled by the cross-town rivalry, I know our teams will lift to the challenge this weekend.
In regard to the weather, temperatures are expected to hit 36 degrees on Saturday in parts of Brisbane. As such, I am strongly suggesting students have multiple water bottles handy for games and start increasing hydration levels well before the match start. Can I also encourage spectators to pack all required sun-safe equipment, especially those heading out to Ipswich (Tivoli) as there is very minimal shade and seating. An umbrella may also prove useful!
A few reminders for all our Rugby League Families ahead of Round 6
Wishing all teams the best of luck for this weekend v Iona.
Mr Todd Kropp, Assistant Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis First IV
Following an impressive start to the season, the First IV hosted Padua in what was sure to be a close tie. With Ben Bingham ruled out due to illness, Christian Jones made his debut for the First IV. Given his hard work at training and his significant improvement this year, Christain’s debut was certainly well deserved.
The tie started well, winning the first two doubles matches in close sets. Padua fought back in winning the next two doubles matches, also in close sets. At two matches all heading into the singles, the tie was delicately poised. Unfortunately, we couldn’t close out the tie, winning only one of our singles matches to go down five matches to three. Standout singles performance from Reuben Wagels, once again winning his singles comfortably in straight sets.
Sitting outright third on the ladder, with two tough rounds to play, a top three finish for the First IV is still well within our grasp. The key will be a victory in our final home match this weekend against Iona.
Mr Justin Musumeci, First IV Tennis Manager
I am glad to report that we once again have had some very positive results in our Round 5 matches against Padua. It was so refreshing to see the Villanova boys playing each rally until the end fuelled by the support that they also received from the rest of their teammates. I know that a lot of players will take a lot of confidence out of last Saturdays matches, which will hold us in good stead for this weekend’s tough Round 6 matches vs Iona.
I would also like to take this opportunity to provide an update on our position on the overall aggregate ladder, we are currently sitting in fourth position with us in a close battle with fifth spot with only a few points separating several colleges. I encourage all players to maintain their focus and to keep up their excellent training dedication for the final two rounds of the AIC Tennis season.
This weekend our Year 9-Opens teams will play at Morningside Tennis Centre. Each group will have their team photos, for any players that are listed as “reserves” – you are still encouraged to attend and be a part of the B team photos, this is not compulsory and is optional for all reserves players. As always, please check the weekly draw on the “Locker Room” section of the College website, as this will have the photo schedule details included.
I wish all Villanova sporting teams the best of luck for their Round 6 matches vs Iona.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Tennis Coordinator
Pre-season Meet #3 is on Thursday 5 September at the SAF (State Athletics Facility – Kessels Rd Nathan). Please visit the College website Locker Room page for further details.
Junior School students will be transported by bus at 2:15pm to SAF and will return at 5:15pm. Middle and Senior School students will depart at 3:10pm and a bus will return at the conclusion of the last event, arriving back at the College at approximately 8:15pm. Parents are welcome to attend and take their son/s home when they have finished their events – students are reminded to sign out with a Villanova staff member if they are leaving the meet with their parent/s after their events (JS boys to Mrs Carabetta and MS/SS boys to Mr Kemp).
There are only two more meets left in the season before the AIC Championships in Week 1 of Term 4. It is therefore vital that athletes attend training and the remaining meets to allow coaches the best opportunity to start finalising the team for the AIC Championships. Coaches may also need to reduce the squad in certain disciplines to allow for our athletes vying for a spot in the team to compete against one another.
Numbers are restricted in Field events at the meets, and athletes will be told if they are required to compete next week at either training on Monday or Tuesday. All sprinters are still encouraged to run both the 100m and 200m events next week.
Training and Pre-Season Meet #3 will continue in Week 9 according to the schedule below.
Monday – Middle Distance- 6:45am-8:00am Meet at Goold Hall.
Sprints, Hurdles, Jumps and Throws 3:45pm-5:00pm at QSAC (Kessels Rd, Nathan)
Tuesday – Sprints, Hurdles, Jumps and Throws 3:45pm-5:00pm at Villanova Park.
Wednesday – Middle Distance- 6:45am-8:00am Meet at Goold Hall.
Thursday – Meet #3 at SAF (State Athletics Facility – Kessels Rd, Nathan)
Please note that on Monday 2 September the Sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws training will be held at QSAC and not Villa Park. We are hoping that the extra opportunity for the boys to train in the venue of the AIC Championships will be beneficial to their overall preparation. Boys will be bussed out to QSAC after school and a return bus will arrive back at the College around 5:45pm. Parents can pick up their son/s at QSAC at the conclusion of training. If they are not collected by 5:10pm at QSAC, they will be put on the return bus back to the College. A bus to and from Villa Park will be available for boys on Tuesday afternoon.
Holiday Meet at UQ
There will be an Invitational Holiday Meet for Track & Field on Thursday 26 September. In order to confirm Villanova’s attendance, we are asking Track & Field families to complete the registration form link (below) if your son is available to attend. Villanova’s participation in the meet at UQ during the holidays will depend on the level of interest from Villa T&F athletes. We will require the JotForm to be completed by Monday 2 September – if we get enough interest, we will confirm via app message and newsletter.

AFL – SEQ Primary AFL Gala Day Success!
On Wednesday, 22 August, our Year 5-6 AFL team participated in the SEQ Primary AFL Gala Day. The boys remained undefeated in their pool matches, starting with a commanding 37-0 victory against Mango Hill State School, followed by an impressive 50-0 win over Yeronga State School. The highlight of the day was their thrilling comeback against Padua College. Despite being 19-0 down in the first half, the boys displayed skill, determination, and a never-say-die attitude to secure a 26-19 victory. In the qualifying final, Villa triumphed with a 46-6 win against Banksia State School and then capped off the day with a resounding 36-0 victory over Nudgee College in the final match.
Throughout the day our boys were fantastic ambassadors for the College, with several opposition coaches approaching me to commend the team on their sportsmanship and skill level. Their outstanding performances led them to qualify for the State Championships, which will be held at the Maroochydore Sports Complex on Friday, 11 October – Saturday, 12 October.
A big thank you to the many parents who supported the boys on the day, and we can hardly wait until we lace up the boots again to compete against the best AFL schools in the state.
Go Villa!
Mr Matt Conlan, AFL Coordinator
Cricket Term Four- Registrations are open!
All Villanova cricketers are encouraged to sign on for Villanova in the upcoming Pre-Xmas cricket competition. Our teams will now be graded, and boys will be able to form their teams and play at a higher level in the divisional BEARS cricket competition (Year 7 to 11) and EDJCA (Year 5 and 6). We strongly urge all our players to please consider signing on for Villanova Cricket Club, so we can prepare together for the upcoming AIC season early in the New Year. Registrations are now open, and you can sign on by going to the cricket page on the Villanova Website.
Training will be in the morning during the week for all teams and these sessions will be run by outside coaches. This service is included in the sign on fee. We do need parents to be assistant coaches and run the boys during matches throughout the season.
Cricket Parent helpers needed.
For the College to run an effective Term Four club cricket programme, we need the assistance of parents to take over running the logistics. We have been fortunate enough to have several good parents run the Zone cricket for many years and they have moved on as their boys have graduated from the College. Roles will consist of assistant coaches (coach the team on Saturdays) team managers, year group managers and Bears and EDJCA delegates.
Please email Mr Nathan Dufty, ndufty@vnc.qld.edu.au, if you can assist and take on a role for Term 4 club cricket.
