Trimester 3 Concludes as Focus Shifts to CBSQ, Track & Field, Touch Football and Water Polo
As our Trimester 3 Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis competitions conclude, I would like to thank all students, coaches, staff, officials and families for their support throughout another successful season of Villa Sport.
Our Firsts programs enjoyed an outstanding campaign, with all three teams finishing with five wins and two losses.
First V Basketball finished equal second. First XIII Rugby League finished equal second. First IV Tennis finished outright third.
Across the College, our aggregate results were equally pleasing. Basketball finished second overall, while both Rugby League and Tennis improved to fourth place, highlighting the continued growth and depth across our programs.
A special congratulations to our premiership-winning teams:
Basketball: Second V, Fourth V, 11C, 10C, 9D, 8D, 7B and 7D
Rugby League: Second XIII
Tennis: 9B and 8B
We also acknowledge our undefeated primary teams:
Basketball 6B, 6C and 6D
Rugby League 6A
These achievements reflect the commitment of our students and the outstanding work of our coaches throughout the trimester.
The final round was a fitting way to conclude the season. The atmosphere at Goold Hall for the final AIC First V home fixture demonstrated the strength of the Villanova community, while it was equally pleasing to see strong support for our Rugby League and Tennis students competing at Villa Park and the Morningside Tennis Centre. For our Year 12 students, these matches marked the conclusion of many years of AIC sport, and we thank them for the leadership, service and example they have provided throughout their Villanova journey.
I would like to acknowledge our Sports Coordinators, Sharon Casey (Basketball), Wian Joubert (Rugby League) and Angus Sullivan (Tennis), together with Andrew Lund, whose leadership of our Track and Field program continues as we build towards the AIC Championships in Week 1 of Term 4. Thank you also to every coach, manager, volunteer and staff member who has contributed to providing positive sporting experiences for our students.
While one season concludes, another exciting period begins.
Track and Field preparations continue towards the AIC Championships, with athletes continuing training and competition opportunities over the coming weeks.
We wish our Opens Basketball team every success at the CBSQ Championships on the Gold Coast this week.
Touch Football and Water Polo trials are now underway, while preparations continue for our upcoming Cricket and AFL programs.
Families are encouraged to continue monitoring The Locker Room for schedules, trial information and program updates.
Thank you again for your ongoing support throughout Trimester 3.
Go Villa! 💚💛
Mr Matthew Hannan, Director of Sport

Basketball
What a fantastic way to finish the 2026 AIC Basketball season! In our final round against St Patrick’s College, Villanova recorded 24 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw, completing an outstanding season in which our teams recorded 159 wins.
Congratulations to all our teams on the way they represented the College throughout the season. A special acknowledgement goes to our Second V, Fourth V, 11C, 10C, 9D, 8D, 7B and 7D, who all finished first in their respective AIC rankings. Our First V also finished an excellent season in second place, winning their final five games in a row.
It was also wonderful to finish the term with our Colours Cup. The energy, House spirit and enthusiasm across the four afternoons made it a brilliant addition to the basketball program, and it was fantastic to see so many boys enjoying the game and representing their Houses.
Finally, a huge thank you to every coach, referee, scorebencher, venue and court supervisor, staff member, student and parent who helped make the season possible. A basketball program of this size simply cannot run without the generosity, time and commitment of so many people behind the scenes. Your contribution to our boys and to Villanova Basketball is greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to everyone involved in a terrific 2026 season.
Mrs Sharon Casey, Basketball Coordinator
Rugby League
Across the season, the Rugby League program continued to grow, with strong involvement from Years 5 through to Opens and a clear focus on improving the quality of coaching, player development and the overall experience for students. There were a number of excellent performances throughout the year, highlighted by the 6A premiership and a highly successful season from the Second XIII.
A major addition to the program in 2026 was the specialist skills program. Students had the opportunity to work with Joe Tomane through Kick & Catch sessions and Rory Ferguson through Wrestling & Contact sessions, alongside support from Cowboys development coaches. These sessions provided players with extra opportunities to develop their individual skills, contact technique and game understanding across the season.
A sincere thank you to Tilermade for their support of the specialist coaching program, as well as to all coaches, managers, staff, parents and supporters who contributed throughout the season. Most importantly, congratulations to all students for the way they represented Villanova and contributed to another positive year of Rugby League at the College.
Mr Wian Joubert, Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis
The 2026 AIC Tennis season has concluded, and congratulations to all players from Years 5-12 on another successful campaign. Throughout the season, our students demonstrated outstanding commitment, sportsmanship and resilience, representing Villanova College with pride both on and off the court. The enthusiasm shown at training sessions and on match days was a testament to the positive culture that exists within the program.
A special thank you goes to our coaches, managers and parent community for their support throughout the season. Their contribution played a significant role in providing a rewarding experience for all players. Finally, congratulations to our Year 12 students who have represented Villanova Tennis so admirably over the years. We thank them for their leadership and wish them every success in their future endeavours.
We look forward to building on this year’s achievements and continuing the growth of Villanova Tennis in 2027. Go Villa!
Mr Angus Sullivan, Tennis Coordinator
