Director of Sport Address
Our GREATS focus this week is Respect.
In sport, respect is demonstrated through how we compete, respond and support one another. It means competing hard and fairly, accepting officials’ decisions, communicating positively, appreciating good play from both teams and showing humility in victory and graciousness in defeat. These expectations apply before, during and after fixtures, including online interactions.
Round 5 provided many examples of determined competition. Our Basketball teams recorded 25 wins and a draw from 28 matches, including 12 wins from 12 Aggregate fixtures. The First V came from behind to win 81-69 against St Peters, securing their third consecutive win of the season. Rugby League recorded eight wins from 12 matches, including two wins from three Aggregate fixtures, while the First XIII secured a hard-fought 32-14 victory at St Peters. In Tennis, our teams recorded two wins from 15 matches, including two wins from 11 Aggregate fixtures, and the First IV continued to compete hard in a 6-2 loss to St Peters. Respect is not determined by the scoreboard. It is shown in the way we acknowledge teammates, opponents, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators, whether the result goes our way or not. I remind all members of our community to uphold the AIC Code of Conduct – April 2026 and raise any concerns respectfully through the appropriate College coach or Sport Coordinator.
This week, Villanova will host AIC Track and Field Meet 2 at QSAC, our AFL team will face St Laurence’s College at Coorparoo AFL and our Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis teams will prepare for Round 6 against Marist College Ashgrove. Friday’s 2027 Year 5 Orientation Day will also include AFL and Cricket trials. Thank you to the staff and volunteers supporting these opportunities.
Let us represent Villa with pride through the respect we show in every contest, conversation and contribution.
Mr Matthew Hannan, Director of Sport

Basketball
It was another fantastic weekend for Villa Basketball, with our teams recording strong wins across the board against St Peters on Saturday.
While it was wonderful to see the continued strength and development of our basketball program, what made me even prouder was the way our boys conducted themselves when some games became quite one-sided. Rather than focusing only on the scoreboard, our players continued to encourage their opposition and demonstrated great sportsmanship and respect. These are the moments that reflect what Villa Basketball is really about.
Next Saturday will also be a special one, with all of our Year 12 teams playing their final games in Goold Hall. We look forward to recognising our Year 12 players and seeing them take the court at home one final time.
Go Villa!
Mrs Sharon Casey, Basketball Coordinator
Rugby League
It has been another strong fortnight for Villanova Rugby League, with several teams continuing to build momentum as we approach the final stages of the AIC season.
A highlight of the weekend was the Year 5B Green v Year 5B Gold fixture, with both Villanova teams producing a highly competitive and entertaining game against one another. The match finished in a fitting 20–20 draw, with both teams displaying some great rugby and excellent sportsmanship throughout.
The Second XIII remain undefeated, continuing their outstanding season and putting together a fantastic run of performances.
We now look forward to two consecutive home rounds to finish the season. This week brings some important fixtures, with both the First XIII and 6A facing tough premiership-deciding games. The following week, Villanova will host St Patrick’s College in the final round of the AIC season, providing a great opportunity to finish the year strongly in front of our home supporters.
Congratulations to all players and coaches on another positive fortnight, and we look forward to a big finish to the season over the next two weeks.
Mr Wian Joubert, Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis
As we enter the final stages of the season, the Villanova Tennis Program continues to build momentum with just two rounds remaining before finals qualification is determined.
The past fortnight has seen some excellent performances across all age groups, with players demonstrating strong commitment at training and impressive resilience during competition. Pleasingly, seven Villanova teams currently sit within the top three positions on their respective ladders, placing them in a strong position heading into the final rounds of the season.
Beyond the results, it has been fantastic to see players continuing to develop their match play, tactical awareness, and teamwork. The depth of talent across the program has been evident each week, with many students embracing new challenges and contributing positively to their teams.
While our teams are in promising positions, the focus remains firmly on continued improvement and finishing the regular season strongly. Every match and every point will be important over the coming weeks as teams look to secure favourable finals positions.
Thank you to our players, coaches, team managers, and families for their ongoing support throughout the season. Your commitment and enthusiasm play a significant role in the success of the program. We wish all teams the best of luck for the final two rounds and look forward to an exciting conclusion to the 2026 season. Go Villa!
Mr Angus Sullivan, Tennis Coordinator
Track and Field
The Track & Field season continues to build momentum, with an outstanding number of Villanova athletes competing at recent practice meets. These competitions have provided valuable race and event experience, and it has been fantastic to see so many students achieving new personal best performances across a wide range of events.
The commitment shown by our athletes at training and competition is beginning to translate into excellent results. Across the squad, students are developing confidence, improving their technical skills, and demonstrating the benefits of consistent training. We encourage all athletes to continue taking advantage of upcoming practice meets as we build towards the AIC Track & Field Championships.
Met East Track & Field Championships
A special congratulations to the Villanova athletes who achieved outstanding results while representing Met East at the recent Track & Field Championships.
Jack F. continued his exceptional season, claiming 1st place in the 1500m (4:12.14) and 1st place in the 5000m (14:55.93).
Jack M. produced a strong performance to secure 2nd place in the 1500m (4:48.45).
On the sprint track, Lindsay D. dominated the competition, winning both the 100m (11.38s) and 200m (22.51s) to claim two Met East titles.
In the field events, Villanova athletes also performed exceptionally well:
These results are a testament to the dedication and hard work of our athletes, coaches, and families. Congratulations to all students who represented Met East, and we look forward to following their progress throughout the remainder of the season.
Mr Andrew Lund
Track and Field Coordinator
