On Monday, 29 July, six of our finest golfers showcased their skills at the AIC Golf Championships held at Keperra Golf Club. The team included Henry Wright (+1), Oliver Wright (5), Zac Joyce (8), Tate Ramsay (13), Harvey Anderson (17), and Archie Goad (12). The day began with cold, blustery conditions, making it almost impossible to keep warm on the front nine as players teed off from 7:30am onwards. Both the wind and the challenging greens made it extremely difficult to build momentum; however, as the day warmed up, so did the scoring.
Villanova placed second overall in the Gross Score Competition behind Iona College and sixth overall in the Balharry Shield (Net Score) behind eventual winners Ambrose Treacy College, with only nine shots separating first to sixth place. Two of our best performances on the day came from Henry Wright, who shot an impressive 79 off the stick, finishing third in the Individual Gross Competition and Tate Ramsay who shot 88 (net 75), finishing sixth overall in the Individual Handicap Competition. A noteworthy mention also goes to Oliver Wright who won the Nearest the Pin Competition on the fourth hole, with his ball resting only 1.07m from the hole. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day, with the team demonstrating resilience and skill in the challenging conditions. Congratulations to all of our golfers for being excellent ambassadors of our College.
Mr Matt Conlan, Golf Coordinator
After a big opening round against Ashgrove, our teams looked to elevate against rival St Patrick’s College. The boys from Shorncliffe have historically been one of our tougher rivals in the AIC playing a very fast and up-tempo style of play, matching what the Wildcats have impressed upon the AIC for the last decade.
A great start from our teams on Friday night with our year 5 and 6 teams going undefeated. Our Year 7s continued the momentum early Saturday morning, but the older years is where we faced our greatest challenge. Whilst results didn’t go our way in some of the A/B Games for Year 9/10/11 there were a lot of positives to be taken out of the games.
In our 1st V game St Pat’s came out firing after a big win against Padua the week before, and whilst our boys had their opportunities, they were able to weather the fast-starting Pat’s to take the first quarter 17-11. After a rally from Pat’s in the second quarter, the third and fourth were all Villa allowing the team to get a strong 85-50 win in Round 2. Next week present’s a new challenge against rival Lauries at their home.
Mr Jordan Mullan, Basketball Coordinator
It was another great morning of Rugby League this past Saturday at Villanova Park as we took on a well-trained St Pats outfit. Our Senior teams travelled to Iona College and our Junior teams got their first taste of running out of the Villanova tunnel. For anyone that attended, the fields were in great condition and presented as a great facility for the day, I would like to acknowledge Clyde and the grounds team at Villa Park for their great work.
It was certainly a mixed bag of results again this week, proving how close the Rugby League draw truly is. I do wish to acknowledge our 5A Rugby League team, unfortunately this group of young men went down in their match 12-8 but for anyone that saw this match it was a great display of Rugby League, and our team showed some skills well beyond their years. A tough loss for the team, but we know these experiences will be of great benefit in the years to come.
A few reminders for all our Rugby League Families ahead of Round 3:
Wishing all teams the best of luck for this weekend v SLC.
Mr Alex Russell, Rugby League Coordinator
After a tough opening round against Marist College Ashgrove, I’m glad to report that we had some very positive results in our Round 2 matches against St Patricks College. After not getting the desired results in Round 1, it was refreshing to see the Villanova boys playing each rally until the end fuelled by the support that they also received from the rest of their teammates. I know that a lot of players will take a lot of confidence out of last Saturdays matches, which will hold us in good stead for this weekend’s tough Round 3 matches against SLC.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our First IV team who recorded their first win of the season against a very well-trained St Pats. This is particularly special in knowing that the Villa students have been improving each round since the trials, showing their growth on the court in both the skill and positive mindset areas. Sometimes it’s easy to underestimate your opponent and become complacent, but it was good to see that this wasn’t the case. Congratulations to the entire Firsts playing group and to 1st IV team manager Mr Justin Musumeci and coach Mr Darren Blade.
Can I please remind all players about the importance of making sure that you arrive in time for team warmups, this is at 7.30am for the “1st session” and 10am for the “second session”. It places a lot of unwanted pressure on your teammates and team manager if you’re not on time, which usually results in the team order changing last minute and potentially even having to forfeit matches. Please allow additional travel time to your match venues.
This weekend our Year 5-8 teams will play at Morningside Tennis Centre. Each group will have their team photos, for any players that are listed as “reserves” – you are still encouraged to attend and be a part of the team photos, this is not compulsory and is optional for all reserves players. As always, please check the weekly draw on the “Locker Room” section of the College website as this will have the photo schedule details included.
I wish all Villanova sporting teams the best of luck for Round 3 vs SLC.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Tennis Coordinator
AIC Tennis First IV vs St Patrick’s
After a disappointing opening round result against Marist, the First IV bounced back against St. Patrick’s winning a thrilling tie on countback. The tie started by splitting doubles rubbers. Standout performances from Ben Bingham and Reuben Wagels winning both their doubles matches.
At two all going into the singles matches, Villa then lost the first two singles matches of the tie, leaving us precariously placed down 4-2 in matches with two matches to play. Needing to win the final two matches convincing to give us a chance of victory, Reuben Wagels and Oliver Simmons playing outstanding tennis under pressure, winning 6-0,6-0 and 6-4, 6-1 respectively to give Villanova a victory on countback of games, 50-45.
We will continue to work hard on the court in preparation for our first away tie against St Laurence’s this weekend.
Mr Justin Musumeci, First IV Manager
The AIC Track and Field season officially got underway this week with training for our various disciplines.
Track and Field training continues next week – Week 5, Term 3.
Monday and Wednesday – Middle Distance- 6:45am-8:00am Meet at Goold Hall.
Tuesday – Sprints, Hurdles, Jumps and Throws 3:45pm-5:00pm at Villanova Park. Boys will be transported to Villa Park by bus after school and a return bus will arrive back at the College at around 5:45pm. Parents can pick up their son/s at Villanova Park at the conclusion of training, however, if they are not collected by 5:10pm at Villa Park, they will be put on the return bus back to the College.
Please note this is the program for the next two weeks. Sprints, Hurdles, Jumps and Throws will then also add Monday afternoon sessions from the 19/8 as per the schedule at Villa Park.
We do understand that many of our athletes will have other co-curricular commitments including AIC Rugby League, AIC Tennis or AIC Basketball. The Sports Office at Villanova College is keen to negotiate an individual training schedule with these students for them to participate and represent the College in Track and Field. This is important to our program as it ensures our best athletes are representing Villanova on the day of the Championships.

StreetSmarts AFL Queensland Schools Cup – Quarter Finals
Villanova’s Junior Male AFL Team which included students from years 7, 8, and 9 travelled to Ormeau Sports Park to play in the quarter final of the AFL Queensland Schools Cup against an AFL School of Excellence, Varsity College.
With 18 members of the team returning from the year 9 survival camp at Emu Gully the team faced some challenges in the game. The team started well and were ahead at each break however, Varsity College kicked a couple of goals late in the third quarter to make it a close contest.
At the third quarter interval coaches Mr Dent and Mr Greenwood challenged the boys telling the team whichever side were prepared to apply the most effort in the fourth quarter would be the winner.
Congratulations to the Junior Leaping Wildcats who played brave and with intent throughout the final quarter to record a positive win after displaying a great whole team performance.
The team now looks forward to playing in the Queensland Schools Cup on the 3rd of September at People First Stadium against Palm Beach Currumbin SHS.
