Director of Sport Address
This week’s G.R.E.A.T.S. focus is Respect, and it provides a fitting theme as we reflect on a significant week of achievement and recognition across Villanova Sport.
At this week’s Trimester 3 Sports Assembly, we had the opportunity to celebrate our students across Basketball, Rugby League, Tennis and Track & Field. Across Trimester 3, Villanova celebrated 11 Basketball premiership or undefeated teams, two Rugby League premiership teams and two Tennis premiership teams. It was wonderful to acknowledge these achievements in front of the College community and, equally, to recognise the coaches, staff and families who supported our boys throughout their seasons.
Following last week’s focus on Growth and the preparation of our Track & Field squad, our 2026 AIC Track & Field season concluded with Villanova finishing fourth in the Primary competition with 391.5 points and eighth in the Secondary competition with 487.5 points. Our Year 6 team produced an excellent result, finishing third overall with 225 points.
Congratulations to our individual event winners Harrison H., Jack F., Eli B., Henry F. and Harry K., with Jack F. completing an outstanding distance double by winning the Open Division 1 1500m and 3000m.
At the Sports Assembly, we also recognised our Trimester 3 major award recipients Sam M., Max R., Reuben W., Jack F. and Lindsay D., together with our G.R.E.A.T.S. Award recipients Tom D. (Basketball), Lachlan F. (Rugby League), Sam C. (Tennis) and Sohum B. (Track & Field).
Respect is demonstrated not only through results, but in how we compete, how we respond when things do not go our way and how we recognise the achievements of others. It is seen in the way we treat teammates, coaches, officials and opposition; in being humble in success; and in representing Villanova with pride.
There is still plenty happening across Villa Sport. Our First V recently competed at the CBSQ Open Championships, finishing 10th in Division 1, and we wish our Year 9 and 10 Basketball teams all the very best as they compete at the CBSQ Junior Secondary Championships.
We also wish our Primary AFL boys every success in their upcoming competition. Enjoy the opportunity to compete alongside your mates, represent the College proudly and demonstrate Respect through the way you play and support one another.
As I mentioned to the boys at our Sports Assembly, results and awards are important and deserve to be celebrated, but success is not measured solely by final placings. Commitment, improvement, teamwork and the manner in which we represent Villanova remain equally important. Giving our best remains the standard.
Looking Ahead
There is plenty to look forward to next week, beginning with our 2027 Trimester 1 Coaches Induction Evening on Monday, October 19, from 5:15–7:00pm at St Thomas Auditorium, Level 3. The evening is particularly relevant for coaches involved in AFL, Cricket, Swimming and Volleyball as we prepare for the 2027 season; importantly, attendance also satisfies the associated compliance training requirement.
Families are also advised that the Weeks 4–7 Training Schedule will be published next Friday, October 23. Please continue to monitor the Locker Room and Villanova College App for the latest training information and updates.
Next weekend will also be another busy one for Villa Sport:
Best wishes to all students involved. Represent Villa with pride and Respect.
Finally, thank you to everyone who has reached out with kind messages and well wishes following the announcement that I will move into a Head of House role at Villanova College in 2027. I am grateful for the support and look forward to continuing to work with our students and families in a different capacity. The change will also allow me to prioritise family time more in the immediate term.
As the College advertises the Director of Sport role and undertakes the appropriate recruitment process, my focus remains on supporting our students, staff and sporting programs and ensuring a positive transition into 2027.
Thank you again for your support. It has meant a great deal.
Go Villa! 💚💛
Mr Matthew Hannan, Director of Sport

Players are expected to compete hard and fairly, accept officials’ decisions, respect teammates and opponents and demonstrate humility in victory and graciousness in defeat.
These expectations apply before, during and after fixtures, including online interactions.
No Dog Policy
A reminder that there is a NO DOG policy at all AIC sporting fixtures. Venue coordinators at and adjacent to Villa Park have reported that some pet owners are ignoring the gate signage. Pet owners who ignore the signs will be asked to remove their pets immediately.

Basketball
CBSQ Opens Basketball Championships
In September, our First V Basketball team competed at the CBSQ Open Championships, finishing an impressive 10th place in Division 1.
CBSQ is always a highly competitive tournament, bringing together some of the strongest school basketball teams from across Queensland. Our boys competed extremely well throughout the four-day competition, demonstrating determination, teamwork and resilience against quality opposition. Finishing 10th in Division 1 is a fantastic achievement, and the boys should be very proud of their efforts.
Congratulations to the following players who represented Villanova College:
Tom D., Nate S., Sam M., Byron D., Lennox C., Alex L., Benno J., Will B., Tyler S., Diego M., Logan H. and Knox V. O.
CBSQ Junior Secondary Championships
This coming weekend, our attention turns to the CBSQ Junior Secondary Championships, where our Year 9 and 10 basketballers will represent Villanova College.
Congratulations to the following boys on their selection:
Lennox C., Alex L., Benno J., Will B., Andy L., Diego M., Logan H., Knox V. O., Olivio V., Aiden W., Eli B. and Tom D.
We wish the boys all the best as they take on some of Queensland’s strongest junior basketball teams. We look forward to seeing them represent the College with pride, determination and great sportsmanship.
Mrs Sharon Casey, Basketball Co-Ordinator
Track and Field
The 2026 AIC Track & Field Championships brought another exciting season to a close, with Villanova athletes proudly representing the College across all age groups. From our youngest competitors in Year 5 through to our Opens athletes, students demonstrated commitment, resilience and a willingness to challenge themselves throughout the season.
As a College, Villanova finished 4th in the Primary competition with 391.5 points and 8th in the Secondary competition with 487.5 points.
Our age-group results were:
A number of athletes produced outstanding performances throughout the Championships. In particular, Jack F delivered an exceptional distance double, claiming victory in both the 1500m and 3000m events and reinforcing his standing as one of the premier middle-distance runners in the competition. His performances were a reflection of the dedication and consistency that underpin success in athletics.
While championships are measured in points and placings, the growth of our program is measured by participation, commitment and a willingness to improve. Across the season, athletes attended training sessions before and after school, supported teammates and continually looked for ways to improve their performances. These habits create the foundation for future success.
As we look ahead to 2027, there is significant reason for optimism. Many of this year’s athletes will return with valuable championship experience, while a new group of students will join the program and contribute to Villanova’s continued development. The challenge now is simple: maintain the momentum, commit to the preparation, and continue building a culture where every athlete strives to be their best.
Thank you to all athletes, coaches, staff and families who supported the program throughout the season. We look forward to seeing what can be achieved in 2027.
Mr Andrew Lund, Track and Field Co-Ordinator
