DIRECTOR OF SPORT ADDRESS
As we near the end of a busy and rewarding Term 2, Villa Sport has remained full of
energy and momentum. This week, we had the privilege of hosting St Augustine’s
College for their annual tour – a long–standing tradition that celebrates the shared
values and camaraderie between our two Augustinian schools. Across Football, Rugby
Union, Basketball and Debating, our students represented the College with pride. While
the results were fiercely contested, what left the strongest impression was the
outstanding conduct and hospitality shown by our young men. We have received
numerous messages from St Augustine’s staff and members of the public praising the
behaviour, respect and warmth displayed by Villanova students.
Thank you to all families who generously opened their homes to billet – your support is
deeply appreciated. A sincere thank you to the many people who helped bring this tour
to life:
• Our Football, Rugby Union, Basketball and Debating coaches and coordinators for
their tireless preparation and leadership
• The Events Team for their outstanding planning and support
• The Villanova College Canteen and Hospitality Teams for their catering and warm
service
• The presenters of trophies and those who led the Welcome Service so thoughtfully
• Our bus supervisors and coordinators at Villa Park and
• The Heads of School and student leaders who supported the leadership forums and
afternoon gatherings
To the team in the Sports Office, thank you for your ongoing initiative and efforts in
supporting this tour; all while navigating the close of Trimester 2 and the transition into
Trimester 3 Sport. A special mention to Mr Todd Kropp for leading the overall
coordination of this tour, managing everything from staff accommodation,
transportation, catering and venue hire to the billeting of St Augustine’s students with
great care. Your efforts ensured a memorable and meaningful experience for all
involved.
Looking ahead, the Confraternity Rugby League Tour to Rockhampton will take place
during the holidays. Best wishes to our players and staff as they prepare for this special
opportunity.
Trimester 3 Sport will commence immediately after the break, with trial matches and
selection sessions for Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis in Week 1. I will take this
opportunity to thank Mr Stuart Rowland for his service as Basketball Coordinator Mr
Stuart Rowland; Mr Liam Johnston will be Basketball Coordinator, effective immediately.
Round 1 fixtures are scheduled for Friday 19 and Saturday 20 July against St Patrick’s
College, with A/B Basketball Teams playing trials against Iona College on Tuesday, 15
July. The AIC Golf Championship takes place on Monday 21 July and Track & Field
training begins mid–Term 3.
Thank you to all players, coaches and families for your commitment throughout
Trimester 2. We look forward to launching into Trimester 3 with continued enthusiasm,
purpose and Villa pride.
Mr Matthew Hannan, Director of Sport

Chess
Round 7 against St Patricks was one fought to the better end, with gusto and
determination. These 2 simple ingredients resulted in an overall win for Villanova.
Being the last round of the season, we want to congratulate all players for turning up to
training and for then giving it their best throughout the season. Of course, the
abundance of Junior School players meant some students regularly had byes and we
appreciate your understanding with this.
This is a great opportunity to congratulate Adam, who captained his College with pride
and offered constant encouragement to his peers. On a similar note, we congratulate
our Year 12 students Issy, Turlough and Adam, who played their final game for Villanova
last week. Also a shoutout to Steve and Charlie for holding back a whitewash in the
Senior division.
Throughout the season, there have been many standout performers in Chess. Eamon
and Jackson have won 11 out of 12 matches in their respective teams – great going!
Intermediate Bs sealed their undefeated season winning the round convincingly and the
premiership for 2025!
Overall, it has been a wonderful season and Friday Afternoons have been both lively and
noteworthy. Our chess breakup will be in early term 3! Keep up your online playing lads
and let’s do even better in 2026!
Many thanks to the wonderful support of the Sports Department. Finally, the CHESS
TEAM; Mr Hayden Kennedy, Mr Liam Periera, Maria Mascadri, Mr Dante Schick and Mr
Callum Fleming for their guidance and mentoring of the boys.
Mrs Kath Underhill and Mr Hayden Kennedy, Chess Coordinators
Football
The 2025 AIC Football season concluded last Saturday with most of our teams playing
against St. Patricks College. Our Villanova teams finished the season strongly with 11
wins, 11 losses and 7 draws. It was a strong finish to the season for our program which
is a great way to end the season. I was present at Villa Park last Saturday and it was very
satisfying to see the significant improvement across all our teams.
The 2025 Villanova Football season saw us finish the season 5th on the aggregate ladder.
I had a lot of our fantastic coaches contact me after their respective matches on the
weekend commenting on how much they’ve enjoyed the season, this was an
improvement on the previous season in which we finished 7th, It’s very satisfying to
know that we have a good base to work with moving forward and a great dedicated
coaching team that have a strong passion for our Football program. As Football
coordinator, it was my third season in the role and I know that with these ingredients,
plus some new and additional initiatives that were implemented for this season,
Villanova Football will continue to be a force in the AIC Football in future years which is
very exciting for the college.
As with all our sports at Villanova College, none of it would be able to run as
professional and as productive without our great coaches and Volunteers. The amount
of time that goes into planning and implementing a Football season is something that a
lot of people don’t understand, I want to say a massive thank you to all our fantastic
coaches who showed great commitment across the entire season. There is a lot of work
that went into the selections, coaching and management of the 29 teams (430
students) that represented the College this year and a huge thank you goes out to our
coaches. We continue to rely on the generosity from parents, old boys, and external
coaches to give our boys the chance to play every Saturday.
There is a lot of work that went into the selections, coaching and management of the 29
teams that represented the College this year and a huge thank you goes out to our
coaches, for what has been a successful season.
I would like to thank our parents: Thank you to Mr Phil Rigby, Mr David Arancibia, Mr
Andrew Masci, Mr Nicholas Matigian, Mr Daniel Gribbin and Mr Elliot Fox. A huge thank
you to our Old Boys who came on board this year. Thank you to Mr Maxwell Wheatley, Mr
Gabriel Spina, Mr Nichloas Vega, Mr Harry Bryant, Mr Samuel Rigby, Mr Jack Affleck, Mr
Demitri James, Mr Luke Waterson, Mr Harry Newman, Mr Will Makridakis, Mr Nicholas
Keskinidis, Mr Ziggi Lenarduzzi, Mr Henrik Frederiksen, Mr Max Simpson, Mr Lachlan
Atkinson, Mr Bede Earthrowl, Mr Henri Williams Poulter, Mr Gianni Chiarelli, Mr Luca
Guitierrez and Mr Alex Russ.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the fantastic staff members who
coached a team. Thank you to Mr. Liam Johnston, Ms Amanda Waterson, Mr Carlos
Yuen, Ms Julie Colbert, Mr Bailey Bourke, Ms Bridgette Watson, Mr Athony Kemp, Ms
Caitlin Walls, and Ms Maria Mascadri.
I would also like to extend a massive thank you to all our external coaches who gave up
their time to take a team for the season. Thank you to Mr Hudson Rogers, Mr Damien
Rogers, Mr Oscar Keith, Mr Patrick Ohman, Mr Luis Arancibia, Ms Clare Campbell, Ms
Sarah Birchall and Mr Dimitri Mascadri. Without the ongoing support and assistance
from the many members of the Villanova College community, the 2025 Football season
would not have run so smoothly.
This season I was also very fortunate to have the strong support of a Junior Football
Coordinator once again. Filling this role for the second season running was Ms. Maria
Mascadri who did such a fantastic job in making sure that all years 5–8 Football teams
were looked after, Maria spent countless hours and always went above and beyond to
ensure that all students and coaches were supported on a weekly basis, there is no
denying that the great results achieved in our junior ages were contributed to by the
hard work and professionalism that was shown by Maria. I’m sure that all coaches and
parents would agree that Maria has been such a great addition to the Football program,
and I simply wouldn’t be able to deliver the overall program without her loyal support to
me personally and her strong commitment dedication. Thank you, Maria.
I would like to give a special mention to our 1st XI Football Head Coach Mr. Hudson
Rogers and 1st XI Football Assistant Coach Mr. Damien Rogers. Both Hudson and
Damien were in their second season with the 1st XI team. The college and I cannot thank
them both enough for their commitment and dedication to the 1st XI team and overall
Football program. Thank you for the countless hours spent in shaping the Villanova 1st XI
Football program, the improvement shown from the 1st XI team this season was clearly
noticeable and it was just reward for the hard work and dedication shown by all
involved.
A shoutout also to all departing year 12 Football students who have dedicated a lot of
time to the Villanova Football program, we hope that you’ve had a lot of fun along the
way whilst creating many fond memories that will last you a lifetime. Thank you also to
our year 12 Football parents who have spent thousands of hours in making sure that
their sons get to training and matchdays and everything in between.
Lastly, I would like to thank our fantastic ground staff of Clyde and his team for having
our fields facilities at Villa Park in pristine condition every weekend. The amount of
positive feedback that we get especially from opposition spectators saying how great
our playing fields are, is a credit to them so many thanks again to Clyde and his team.
I look forward being a part of and seeing the Villanova football program continue to grow
in future years.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Football Coordinator
Rugby Union
The rugby season concluded last weekend with a solid round against St. Patrick’s College.
Villanova came away with 13 wins and 9 losses and won the aggregate games 8–3. It was the
only opportunity we had to have all of our rugby teams play together at Villanova Park and all
fields were running flat out from 8am, with many boys having the opportunity to be at the one
place and stay to support their classmates and then the first XV.
With the season concluding we must congratulate the following teams on their success.
Congratulations to our aggregate premiership winning teams:
9B coached by Mr Anthony Caruso and Mr Troy Speedy
Congratulations to our non–aggregate premiers;
7C coached by Mr Sean Mahon and Mr Peter Green
5A coached by Mr Connor Moloney and Mr Cameron Bukowski
5B coached by Mr Matthew Hickey and Mr David Harris
We would also like to acknowledge the 9A’s for finishing second and the 3rds, 4ths, 7As,
7Bs and 9Cs for finishing third in their respective competitions.
The aggregate points for the rugby season were:
Ashgrove 81, Iona 70.5, SLC 68, Padua 64.5, Villanova 61.5, SPC 40, SEC 30.5 and SPE3.5.
Aggregate premiers: 1sts Padua, 2nds SLC, 3rds Ash, 4ths Ash, 10A Ash, 10B Ash, 9A
SPC, 9B Villa, 8A SLC, 8B Ash, 7A SPC and 7B Iona.
Training for the First XV group began back in term three last year in the gym. It is an
incredibly long lead into the season, but a new coaching team consisting of Mannie
Navarro, Mr Sean Carroll, Mr Andrew Beattie and Mr Tony McGahan there inspiring and
motivating the boys to be their best, they enthusiastically embraced the pre–season.
Marco Mastrorocco, our Strength and Conditioning guru was absolutely sensational in
getting both of the Andrew Slack and Ben Mowen squads fit and strong in the off
season.
The firsts finished fourth in the competition after winning four games and losing three.
The Iona win was probably their most dominant performance of the season in front
many supporters at Easts. A couple of close losses to the eventual premiers Padua and
to SLC were hard to take but the boys will learn from this and enter next year with a real
belief that they can go on with it. Well done to all the boys who represented the College
in the firsts this year and in particular to our Year 12 students across all of the Open
teams, who have concluded their rugby journey at Villanova.
There is a lot of work that went into the selections, coaching and management of the
twenty–four teams that represented the College this year and a huge thank you goes out
to our coaches, for what has been a successful season for some year levels and a
challenging one for others. We continue to rely on the generosity from parents, Old Boys
and external coaches to give our boys a run on the paddock every Saturday and I would
like to thank our parents: Mr Jason Harris, Mr David Grigson, Mr David Hollett, Mr Ben
Francis, Mr Dean Staley, Mr Troy Colley, Mr Anthony Caruso, Mr Mark McCullum, Mr Troy
Watson, Mr Peter Green, Mr Troy Speedy, Mr David Meredith, Mr Shaun Mahon, Mr Paul
Gapes, Mr Matt Brady and Mr Mark Parker, Mr Matthew Hickey and Mr David Harris
A huge thank you to our Old Boys who came on board this year. Thank you to: Mr Jamie
Mullins, Mr Shaun Hourigan, Mr Joel O’Reilly, Mr Jack Daly, Mr Will Lawrance, Mr Tommy
Lawrance, Mr Noah Staley, Mr Tiernan O’Neill, Mr Ben Lawrance, Mr Patrick McIlwain,
Mr Morgan Staley, Mr Tom Anderson, Mr Oliver Heijo–Coogans, Mr Brodie Young, Mr
Jackson Connor, Mr Max Downie, Mr Connor Moloney, Mr Cameron Bukowski and Mr
Harry Innes.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff members who coached a
team. Thank you to: Mr Terry Gaffney, Mr Steve Bremner, Mr Riley Brown, Mr Pat
O’Halloran, Mr Joel Cosgrove, Mr Mick Garske, Mr Mannie Navarro, Mr Kirk Astill, Mr
Hershelle Classen, Mr Chris Paterson, Mrs Sheridan Carey, Mr Tim Joseph, Mr Andrew
Lund, Mr Alex Russell and Mr Wian Joubert, who also assisted with the Year 5–8 rugby
teams and helped coordinate team lists with coaches and the running of the junior
games on Saturdays. It is great to have so many staff members on board who contribute
to establishing a positive rugby culture within the College.
Finally, I would also like to extend a massive thank you to all our members of the
Villanova community who offer to help with refereeing and officiating for each of our
home games. Thank you to: Mr Paul Woodward, Mr Matthew Campbell, Mr Troy Watson,
Mr Dave Capra, Mr Joel O’Reilly, Mr Noah Staley and a special mention to Mr Ben Henry,
for refereeing and assisting in finding and placing referees when we were short on a
number of occasions. We are also incredibly lucky to have students who sign on to
referee. Archie Godwin and Charlie Caruso continue to improve in their second year and
we welcomed Jack Burnett and Cooper Price into refereeing. Harry Woodward has been
officiating for a number of years now and continues to develop his ability to handle
higher pressure games and is always looking for appointments.
Without the ongoing support and assistance from the many members of the Villanova
College community, the 2025 season would not have run so smoothly.
Mr Chris Everding, Rugby Union Coordinator
First XV Rugby Union
Round 7 – Villa 1st XV vs St Patrick’s College
In front of a loyal home crowd at Villa Park, the Villanova 1st XV produced a strong and
spirited performance to defeat St Patrick’s College 41–26 in Round 7 of the AIC
competition.
With several key players sidelined due to injury, the game was an opportunity for new
faces to step up and they did so with courage, confidence and class. The replacements,
slotted in seamlessly, playing with heart and commitment and showing that the
strength of this team lies in its depth and unity.
From the opening whistle, Villa looked sharp in attack and composed in defence.
Accurate passing, strong carries and disciplined structure allowed the boys to control
the tempo and build scoreboard pressure. The team’s intent was clear. Play for each
other, play for the jersey and make Villa Park proud. While St Patrick’s pushed hard in
the second half, the resilience and connection within the team held strong. Every player
contributed to what was a full–squad performance marked by pride, effort and belief.
The character shown in this match is a clear reminder of what makes Villa Rugby
special. No matter who pulls on the jersey, the standard remains high.
To all players who played for the 1st XV or were in the Andrew Slack Squad, thank you for
your effort and for the positive way you responded to each challenge this year. The Villa
community is proud of you.
Mr Mannie Navarro, First XV Coach

What to wear at training?
It is acceptable for Rugby League players to wear any coloured/club or other old clothes
to training. Boys are not encouraged to wear their Villanova playing uniform to training
but may do so if they wish. We certainly would not recommend Rugby League players to
wear their PE uniform or any shirt that will get ripped and torn.
Tennis
It is shaping up to be another fun and exciting AIC Tennis season ahead. Last season
saw us with our highest finish on the aggregate table in many years, our goal is to
continue to improve our Tennis program and to keep pushing the top colleges in AIC
Tennis.
Although the trials started in Week 9 of this term, please find below the details for our
annual Villanova Age Championships. I kindly ask all parents to save the date for this
event and registrations are now open. This event is opened to all students who have
registered to play Tennis in Term 3 for Villanova.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Tennis Coordinator
Rugby League
A huge thank you to the families who made it to the Rugby League trials this week. The
sports office fully understands that there is so much happening on the Villanova
calendar (most namely exams for most grades) during this week so we are grateful. The
trials for Rugby League will continue in Week 1 of Term 3 with our final team selections
being announced via Parent Lounge on Thursday of week 1 ahead of our full school trial
v St Patricks College on Saturday 19 July.
During the holiday break, there will be a skills clinic on offer on Saturday 12 July at Villa
Park. This will be available for students participating in Rugby League, this is not a
compulsory session. A schedule for the day, including a registration form, will be
released early next week.
Finally, we will release the Term 3 training schedule next week via Parent Lounge and the
Locker Room page.
Term 4 Zone/BearsCricket Competition
Villanova will be entering teams into the T4 Bears competition in term four this year and
we would like to encourage ALL our cricketers to think about playing for the College
rather than other clubs. The boys in Year 6 to Open will be playing divisional cricket in
the BEARS comp and we want to try and keep our A/B and C/D players together to
develop their cricket and to get a core group of players to stay together to help improve
and raise the standard of cricket at Villanova. We didn’t perform as well as we would
have liked this year and we are determined to keep developing our players skill sets
during term 4 to perform better in the AIC competition next year.
Please keep this in mind and have a chat to other families who might think of playing for
another club. The boys will be placed in challenging divisions in BEARS, which will
benefit their cricket and give them the necessary pre–season competition. Last year our
Year 9A boys played together as did the 1st XI and second XI, who then came away with
the Division 1 and Division 2 trophies.
If there are cricket parents willing to support Villanova cricket and who are passionate
about the pre–Christmas Cricket competition, we would love you to assist with the
planning and preparation of the Term 4 season, can you please contact Mr Nathan Dufty in the Sports Office.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Cricket Coordinator

End of Term Wrap-Up – Athletic Development
As Term 2 wraps up, we celebrate the end of a strong Rugby season. The First XV capped it off with a proud win over St Patrick’s, securing 4th place on the ladder. Even more impressive? Zero non-contact injuries across the squad, marking the fourth year in a row. A clear sign that our commitment to smart, consistent work in the gym continues to deliver.
The Soccer team also finished strong, turning the tide after a challenging start… a testament to their grit and perseverance.
Looking ahead, Term 3 shifts focus to Basketball, Volleyball, and Rugby League, with tailored in-season S&C support already in place.
There’ll also be plenty of LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) sessions across the week for all age groups, an ideal chance to build movement quality, resilience, and performance capacity. Don’t miss the opportunity to get involved.
Holiday Training: The gym will be open during the break on Tuesdays and Thursdays (July 1, 3, 8, 10) from 7:30–9:00am. All students are welcome to stay sharp and keep progressing.
Marco Mastrorocco
Director of Athletic Development
“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” – Vincent Van Gogh This week reminded us that sport is far more than competition – it is a catalyst for connection, character and community. From hosting St Augustine’s College and celebrating our shared Augustinian spirit, to wrapping up the season with grit and gratitude, Villa Sport has shown once again what can be achieved when many work as one.
Every billet offered, every game played, every event planned and every young man who gave his best – it all matters. Thank you to our coaches, coordinators, officials, staff and families for the hours of unseen effort that turn good programs into great experiences.
As we look ahead to Term 3, let us carry forward the pride, purpose and unity that
defined Trimester 2. The path forward is shaped by what we build together – on the fields, in the stands and beyond.
Go Villa!
