Villa Sport continues to build strong momentum across the College. This week in our GREATS framework, the focus is Community. In sport, community is built through connection, shared effort and the willingness to support one another at every moment.
Across Trimester 1, this has been clearly evident. With over 800 students involved and more than 100 coaches and staff supporting our programs, Villa Sport is more than teams and results; it is a community built on relationships, commitment and pride.
We saw this on display again last weekend. AFL recorded 10 wins from 13 matches, with all Year 6 teams remaining undefeated and our First XVIII achieving a joint premiership. Cricket secured 12 wins across the round, with the Seconds and 6A teams finishing undefeated seasons. Volleyball continued its strong form with 13 wins from 20 matches, highlighted by the unbeaten 8D team.
Across the season, Villanova finished 2nd in the AFL Aggregate, an outstanding achievement that reflects the depth, commitment and collective effort of our community. Premiership winning teams results will be formally recognised at our Term 2, Week 4 Assembly on Tuesday, May 12.
As Trimester 2 begins, this sense of community will be critical. Football, Rugby Union, Cross Country and Chess are now underway, with trials and training sessions providing every student the opportunity to belong, contribute and grow.
The message to our students is simple. Show up. Support each other. Play your role. When we commit to the team and the community around us, standards rise and experiences become more meaningful.
Because at Villa Sport, we believe something simple but powerful: We can win and we will grow.

AFL Week 7 + Season Report
The 2026 AFL season has been an exceptional and memorable one for Villanova College. Across all age groups, our players demonstrated grit, skill, and a powerful commitment to our Augustinian values of community, perseverance, and teamwork. It has truly been a season that reflects the spirit of Vincit Veritas – Truth Conquers.
Week 7 + Season Highlights
Acknowledgements
This season’s success is the result of the combined effort of our entire AFL community:
To our players, thank you for your determination, sportsmanship, and pride in representing Villanova. Your growth, resilience, and teamwork have been inspiring.
To our coaching staff, we extend our sincere gratitude to all coaches for your expertise, passion, and commitment to developing both the athletic and personal qualities of our young men.
To our parents, families and supporters, your support has been invaluable. From early morning drop-offs to enthusiastic sideline encouragement and behind-the-scenes assistance, your contributions enrich our program immeasurably.
Congratulations once again to all players, coaches, families, and supporters. We look forward to building on this strong foundation as we prepare for an even bigger and better 2027 season.
Mr Brendon Brauer, AFL Coordinator (Monday to Friday), Mr Chris Paterson, AFL Coordinator (Saturday) and Mr Hershelle Classen, Years 5-8 Junior AFL Coordinator
Cricket
Looking back over the 2026 season and having watched many games that were played at Villa Park each Saturday and sorted through early round team lists, it was once again clear that as a sport, that we took another hit as our numbers were again lower than usual and we were not as dominant as we have been over the years. With AFL once again increasing their number of teams in the AIC competition, a few of our regular top aggregate level cricketers headed over to participate in other sports. This no doubt has had a considerable impact on our depth and put more pressure on some of the other boys to perform above expectation.
There was a great deal of preparation and planning that goes into the selections, coaching and management of the players since last October and a huge thank you goes out to everyone involved, as always – our coaches are the real backbone of our program. Having enthusiastic and motivated coaches, allows the program to be effective and our younger age groups benefit from the cricket knowledge being passed on to them from the coaching they are receiving. Hopefully more players will continue to come back to cricket to play, so that we can build on the twenty-three sides that proudly represented the College this year.
Congratulations to our 2nd XI ‘undefeated premiership team’ and to coach Mr Damien Lewis and our 6A ‘undefeated premiership team’ and coaches Mr. Ned Godwin. Mr. Roman Dunne and Mr. Joey Watson. Well done also to the 1st XI, 9A, 9B and 8A sides for finishing top three in their respective competitions. I also wanted to give a special shout out to all our year 5 cricket teams who all proudly represented the college for the very first time, the positive and glowing feedback that I have received from many new Villanova parents has been amazing.
Overall, in the aggregate shield, Villanova finished fourth this season after being third last season. Congratulations to Ashgrove College, who have won it again and who have won it more time than any other colleges since the inception of AIC in 1999. The aggregate shield is something that Villanova aspires to win each season, and planning is already in place to give us every possible chance of winning the shield in 2027.
Final Aggregate Points.
Ashgrove (63.5pts), Iona (56.5pts), SPC (53.5pts), Villa (49.5pts), Padua (44.5pts), St Laurence’s (44pts), St Peters (31.5pts), St Edmund’s (2pts).
Cricket Coaches:
Thanks to the following people who coached a team this year, your efforts have enabled the boys to get out and play some cricket and develop their skills.
External: Nathan Reardon, Michael Dann, and Michael Webster.
Staff: Steve Miller, Chris Everding, Liam Murphy, and Ms. Clare Bass.
Parents: Paul Innes, Damien Lewis, Dave Capra, Steen Carlson.
I would like to make special mention to following group of Old Boys, who have returned to the College and helped with the program. Fourteen of the twenty-six teams were coached by Old Boys and without them, we would really find it difficult to cover these sides and have them play. Some of these gentlemen are only in their first year out but they have made the effort to get involved and the impact they have had on the boys, particularly the Junior School boys has been invaluable, and they all thoroughly enjoyed having these men as coaches:
Joshua Schaumburg, Jamie Mullins, Ben Thallon, Dale D, Souza, Harry Innes, Cameron Bukowski, Connor Moloney, Lachlan Brown, Charli Cox, Alexander Illka, Jimmy Collins, Dean Basilli, Luke Waterson, Oliver Simmons, Ned Godwin, Roman Dunne, Joey Watson, Max Carson, Sam Rigby, Henrik Frederiksen, Thomas Anderson, Finn Thallon, Lewis McMahon, Max Jones, Chris Anderson, Andrew Dickie, Charlie Genders, Lachlan Whaites, Lucas D’Amore, Connor Nicholls, Mitchell Millard and Campell Shaw.
A big shout out to the Groundsmen at Villa Park, Clyde, Jenesse and Jesse, for preparing the fields each round and having Villa Park looking exceptional week in and week out. It is a facility the whole College can be proud of and is the envy of other Colleges. Thank you for your hard work, so that we can get the boys out playing and experience high class grounds.
Zone Cricket Term 4 2025
We have once again been building up the profile of Villanova in the local club cricket scene and I was able to coordinate a fantastic band of coaches (mostly Old Boys and Parents), who worked weekly with all the club teams across the term four season. It is our aim, with the assistance of a new and existing ‘keen group’ of parents to continue to run the term four cricket program, and to get more players involved. Villanova is hoping to put as many of our AIC teams into the BEARS comp for students in years seven to Opens and enter many years 5 and year 6 teams into the EDJCA competition.
A massive thank you to Mr Matthew Borger (Villanova Parent) who was instrumental in making sure that our Term 4 club season ran smoothly, Matt spent countless hours each week and without his dedication and support, the club would not have operated as smoothly as it did. Matt has worked alongside me and provide me with much support across the last three seasons, to put simply – the T4 Villanova cricket club would have not been able to operate without Matt’s dedication and commitment to the school. Unfortunately for the college, this is Matt’s last year as a Villanova parent, which means that it will leave a big hole to fill in future seasons. Thank you again Matt for all your tireless support and dedication to both me personally and to Villanova cricket, it certainly never went unnoticed and on behalf of the college, enjoy the many free hours that you will now have during the cricket season.
Letters and registrations for the Term 4 – 2026 club season will come out in August asking for registrations, and if we can keep a lot of our AIC teams together for term four and play a high standard of cricket, it should then flow on have a positive outcome for next year’s AIC cricket season. Please have a chat to other parents of boys in your team/year cohort and see if we can keep them together at Villanova, rather than another local cricket club, as it will allow us to be much better prepared for our next cricket season.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Cricket Coordinator
It is a sombre feeling wrapping up the 2026 AIC Volleyball season. It is with sadness that our program comes to an end, but there is certainly much to celebrate and remember. The 2026 season saw a full round of AIC matches and was a season filled with ups and downs, wins and losses and a mix of long-term development and short-term success. Only time will tell how our targets will fare on the court in the future, but I am optimistic our approach and long-term plan will continue to make Villanova a fierce competitor in AIC Volleyball for many years to come.
The positive results we have had throughout the season were due to the tireless efforts of coaches and players exemplifying what our program is striving for, playing an aggressive style of volleyball, not being intimidated by our opponent or surroundings and being humble winners and gracious in defeat. A special mention to our 8D team and coaches Mr John Holroyd and Year 10 student Max T who finish the season as Premiership winners. I also acknowledge the 7A and 10C team who finished the season as runners-up. Furthermore, I would like to thank each of our coaches for the season and a special mention to our venue managers: Sharon Casey and Dom Hayes as well as an acknowledgment for our skills director Angus Sullivan.
As a coach, it was an honour to have worked with each of our teams throughout the season. It was truly a great experience to get the opportunity to work with the First VI team as they competed. In 2026, the First VI team were truly thrilling to watch, and the coaching team and I are proud of the achievements of this year’s team. I would like to acknowledge and thank First VI captain Luke J and First VI Vice-Captain Lucas C for their efforts above and beyond training and games. I would like to personally thank the First VI Assistant coach es, Shania Hewitt who celebrates her 10th year at Villanova, Nick Craig and Jess Russell-Croucher for many hours of contribution and finally, a special thank you and acknowledgement for all of our departing Year 12 students for their contribution over many years to AIC Volleyball.
Before we close the curtain on Volleyball for 2026, our teams will return later this year for the Volleyball QLD Schools Cup series.
In closing, once again, it is with the deepest gratitude that I thank all Volleyball coaches, families, referees and support staff for their contribution to Volleyball in 2026.
Mr Todd Kropp, Volleyball Coordinator
Rugby Union and Football
In preparation for the upcoming Rugby Union and Football seasons, I ask all parents to assist the College by reiterating the points listed below with your son regarding the College’s approach to both Rugby Union and Football. It will make a difference if you do.
‘The Villanova Way – How We Approach Training’
As we begin our trials phase, it is important to reiterate messages around the College Selection Policy. Selection into AIC teams is based on a number of factors including attendance at training and games, skill level, experience, knowledge, ability, attitude, team combinations, position awareness, communication and performance.
Throughout the trial process and AIC competition, selections by coaches may vary week to week, meaning player movement up and down in teams is encouraged and teams are not locked in for the entire season. Coaches of all teams, excluding the Open Firsts, will attempt to ensure students receive equal game time (or as close to as possible) in all pre-season and AIC games. Genuine requests for feedback on individual performance are welcomed through your coach in the first instance, then your Sport Coordinator or Director of Sport.
For parents, we ask that you be patient and not react to selections you feel are not warranted. Allow coaches to put the boys in teams where they feel they best fit. Do not approach coaches during training or straight after games. This is schoolboy footy and many of the coaches are volunteers or young old boys starting out. Let’s support them!
We encourage all boys who have registered for a Term 2 sport to be resilient when faced with adversity this season. Often, the easy option when things do not go our way is to give up. Our hope is that we see adversity as a challenge to overcome with motivation, effort and commitment. An opportunity to build character as we strive for excellence both on and off the field of play.
Rugby Union
Rugby & Football – Coaches/Referees for the 2026 season
Year 5-12 Rugby – Chris Everding email: ceverding@vnc.qld.edu.au. If there are any parents or guardians who wish to nominate to be rugby coaches or referees next term, please contact Mr Chris Everding. There is a shortage of Year 5, 9 and 10 Rugby coaches. Recent coaching experience is essential along with a Smart Rugby Qualification.
AIC Rugby & Football Training/Trials
Training times and venues for all Year 5-12 rugby and football teams are listed below. All Year 5 and 6 teams will train at Little Langlands or Whinstanes. Year 7-12 teams will train at Villa Park. The College will provide bus transportation to Villa Park for all teams. Parents are required to collect their son from Villa Park after training at 5:15pm. There will be no return bus service from Villa Park.
AIC Rugby & Football Trial Games – Date Claimers
AIC Rugby & Football Training Schedule
The below schedules will be applied all season. NOTE – some Year 5 and 6 training times could change depending on the coach’s availability, however, we will endeavour to keep to the schedule below.
Rugby Training
Villanova Rugby Union & Football Uniforms
ALL students from Years 5-12 in both Rugby Union and football must purchase the Villanova Rugby Union and football uniform in readiness for the up-coming season. This includes shorts, jersey and socks. The Uniform Shop will have all Rugby Union and football gear available for purchase. We are currently out of Medium and Small rugby jerseys. Boys can wear any jersey this Saturday to internal trials if they do not have the Villa jersey. There will be some trial kits handed out to players to wear this week. Some boys will be given a rugby league jersey as a loan jersey until new stock arrives, which should be during the second week of the holidays.
Players will be given a warning if they do not have the correct uniform after round 1 and then asked to sit out if they do not have the correct playing attire the following week.
IMPORTANT – all boys who sign up for Rugby Union and football WILL make a team, therefore, parents can purchase these items of clothing now. We are expecting players to have their uniforms ready to wear on the Sat 25th April trial day versus Marist College Ashgrove. (Please bring a spare jersey to wear as the boys will be playing against each other and it will make it easier for coaches to identify players).
What to wear at training?
It is acceptable for both the Rugby Union and football players to wear any coloured/club or other old clothes to training. Boys are not encouraged to wear their Villanova playing uniform to training but may do so if they wish. We certainly would not recommend Rugby Union players to wear their PE uniform or any shirt that will get ripped and torn.
ANZAC and Labour Day – Long Weekends and Term 2 Sport
Please note that there are 2 long weekends scheduled early in Term 2. We ask parents to ensure their son is available to honour their commitment to the team by attending the matches scheduled before heading off to enjoy a well-deserved break.
It is imperative that players are not missing during these weekends. We ask parents to take this into consideration when planning any trips away.
