This past weekend, Villanova took on our home-town rivals in Iona College in Round 6 of AIC. Previous years have shown how competitive our two Colleges are and 2023 was no exception. Our College showed some great results on the scoreboard and some great effort on the field, this coincided with welcoming back students of the past for Villanova’s Old Boys’ day. With this special event and in conjunction with our 75 Year Anniversary, our Firsts Rugby and Football teams competed wearing the Villanova heritage jersey, a uniform paying homage to the first ever playing strip of Villanova College. It was fantastic to welcome back Villanova Old Boys!
With Term 3 Sport beginning next week, please keep an eye on the website Locker Room page for all the details, including the trial schedule for week 9 of Term 2 and the training schedule for Term 3. We are looking forward to returning to the Basketball, Tennis and Rugby League arenas.
This weekend marks the final round of AIC Chess, Football and Rugby versus St Peters Lutheran College. For many of our Year 12 students, this may be the final time they represent the College on the sporting field. On behalf of the College, I wish to acknowledge and thank all of our Year 12 students for their contribution to Chess, Football and Rugby over their time at the College.
I encourage all students to continue displaying a high standard of uniform and behaviour as we finish Term 2 Sport.
I wish the best of luck to all teams as they represent the Green and Gold for the final time in Term 2.

Round 6……Victorious Villanovans Defeat Iona!
Our final home round was one of great excitement and exceptional chess playing! Congratulations to our Open IV who drew their first round 4-4, and then came back to win the second round, 6-2. This round was the decider, and there was great elation from all who were watching. This was a real turnaround from the trials against Iona, when we experienced a huge loss over the might of the ‘Black and White’!
Special mention to one of our up-and-coming champions, Henry Dolphin, Year 6 for his amazing efforts on Friday. Being down some Senior players, Henry volunteered to play against an Iona student two divisions higher! Unfortunately, the Ionian took out the first round, which could have left Henry feeling disappointed. However, not the case for our lad! Henry, you made us all very proud with your resilience and your ability to fight back and win the second round. Cheers to you!
This week we have nine of our Year 5 and Year 6 students participating in the Brisbane South Term 2 Junior Chess Tournament at Holland Park State School. We wish them all the very best.
Remember parents, to have your sons register and play on the online Chess Club. https://www.chess.com/club/villanova-college/join/8118b7
Also, be sure to check out the Gardiner Chess Website for future competitions.
Wishing all players the very best this week for our final round of chess at St Peters Indooroopilly. We will be travelling by bus on Friday afternoon to St Peters and back to Villanova.

Villanova’s Cross-Country team affectionately known as the Running Wildcats went to Curlew Park, Sandgate last week to compete at the annual AIC Cross-Country Championships. The team appreciated the opportunity to compete in a Cross-Country event, especially in light of the cancellation of the St Laurence’s warm-up event due to the prolonged rain event.
There were many great runs on the day, reflective of the perseverance, consistency and hard work displayed over the Cross-Country season, with many running at their best. Significant efforts displayed by Running Wildcats at Curlew Park included the following, with the first home in each age group is acknowledged as Age Champion:
AIC Cross-Country Individual Results
AIC Cross-Country Age Group Scores:
AIC Cross-Country Aggregate Scores:
I would like to acknowledge Year 6 finished overall in first place. This result was made more extraordinary by Villa’s first eight runners finishing within the first 20 places. An excellent performance by the boys from Year 6, well done.
Congratulations also to the Open age group who attained third place in their age group, with many boys exceeding expectations to complete their final run as a ‘Running Wildcat’. Many of the younger age groups should be motivated for next year from their display of grit and determination.
Special mention goes to Mitchell Rieck who placed fifth in the Open age group last year and was on track for another great performance this year. Unfortunately, Mitchell was unable to take his place on the start line due to illness.
The Aristo Zenonos Medal for the most outstanding performance of the day was awarded to Joaquin Wieczorek who following a training injury at the end of Term 2 last year missed the entire third term of school. Joaquin had a number of extended stays in hospital during this time to address complications linked to the injury sustained. It was a brave performance that exemplified his perseverance to finish as the seventh runner home in the Open Division. An Inspirational performance Joaquin!
I would like to thank the Sports Office for their hard work in supporting the Running Wildcat’s.
The large numbers attending training reflected the excellent running program delivered to the Running Wildcats by the coaches and managers. The work of Amy Roberts, Jordan Roache, Gerard Gannon, and David ‘Barto’ Barton, who were always empathetic and professional, assisted each competitor to strive for their best performance!
The year 6 Cross-Country team that won their age group at AIC Championships.

Last weekend saw us come up against our old rivals in Iona College. This round is always a tough and competitive match up across all sports and once again, it proved no different across all Football matches. The teams that had the great opportunity to play at Villa Park had the additional home crowd support with it being “Old Boys Day’ which created some extra excitement for the occasion. Overall, we had eight wins, seven draws and 13 losses. Although the results were not all in our favour, it was great seeing the improvement from a lot of teams who had played Iona in trials earlier in the term, resulting in some unfortunate heavy defeats. During the term, we’ve asked all players to keep training hard weekly, learn from our mistakes and always look to improve by listening to your coaches. Thank you to all players for keeping up a positive attitude and showing that true Villanova spirit.
Unfortunately, our Firsts had a tough day with a 0-7 loss. The scoreline doesn’t reflect the effort that was put in by all players who played almost the entire match a man down. On top of this, Iona had a very strong team who were also leading the competition, they simply capitalised on the extra player and took full advantage of the situation. I’ve got no doubt that the team can re coup from last Saturday’s disappointment and finish the season with a strong performance against SPLC.
This weekend we come up against SPLC in the last round of the season, I once again ask all players to make sure that they finish the season strongly and put in a great team performance to end the season. It’s very easy to look at wins and losses and judge the season purely based of results, we knew this season was going to be challenging and when we look across the team results throughout the year, we’ve shown significant improvement in a lot of areas which gives us a base to build on for next year.
I would like to say thank you to the many parents who have volunteered their time helping throughout the season, I would also like to give a special shout out to all of the College staff and several team coaches who have helped out throughout the season with bus supervision. This requires a substantial amount of extra commitment and without them, students wouldn’t have been able to get to training weekly throughout the season – so a massive thank you to all of you.
Good luck to all coaches and players in your final Football matches of the 2023 season.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Football Coordinator
First XI
This was our last home game with plenty to play for. We had a few injuries and sickness in the team, so it was going to be a tough task against the undefeated Iona.
The boys started well but after 10 minutes a very unlucky incident left the boys with 10 players. The boys were working so hard but found it very difficult defending against a marauding Iona. Halftime we were down 3-0. The second half saw the boys unlucky not to grab an early goal. They kept working hard but couldn’t sustain the constant pressure. Final score a 7-0 loss. Despite the loss the boys played well, and this week still have a top three finish to aim for in our last game of the season.
On behalf of the Firsts boys I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my manager Tony and our Seconds coach Hudson for their support through this season. Also many thanks to our Firsts sponsors the Fish Factory and MADD Home Loans and the parents who organised our lunches for our football camp.
Mr Tom Carnavas, First XI Head Coach
Old Boy Peter Klaassen (class of 2019) presenting the 2023 First XI Football team with their heritage jersey.
The Junior rugby teams led the way last weekend with some gutsy and determined matches played at Iona College. The boys have been prepared well throughout the season and were ready for anything that Iona was going to throw at them. The Year 5s began the morning with three wins from as many games with the 5As leaving it to the last play of the match to snatch a 7-5 win. The 5Bs and 5Cs scored convincing wins. Our 5D side played MCA at Villanova Park and romped in with a 55-0 win. The Year 7s continued the trend and all sides came away with wins. The 7A game was a tough and tense match but our boys prevailed 22-15, to claim top spot in the race for a premiership. The same result happened in the 9As, where Villa beat Iona for the first time in three years, 10 – 7 to leapfrog a previously undefeated Iona and with a bye this week, take out the premiership a week early.
Overall the Year 5 – 8 teams came away with 11 wins and four losses. This is a massive turn around to results against Iona in previous years and full credit goes to our coaches, who have all prepared the boys well. They fought until the final whistle and defended as a pack and supported one another.
The Year 9s flew the flag at Villa Park, winning their two matches against Iona along with the 4ths, but unfortunately our other sides all went down to strong Iona opposition. The firsts gave Iona an unassailable 26 point lead, which our boys came close to but in the end went down 38 – 33. It was a strong fightback but they were always chasing Iona and this leads to unforced errors.
We are approaching the end of the season with Round 7 upon us this Saturday. All of our Junior teams will be playing at home and they would love your support. The following teams are either going for an undefeated season or have already secured a premiership; 5C, 5D, 6A, 6C, 7A and 7B.
All Year 5-8 rugby teams have their photos this Saturday and even if you are injured, we want you there in your jersey for the photo. Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the team photo.
Mr Chris Everding, Rugby Coordinator
Volunteers
For those games being played at Villa Park this Saturday 10 June, we are asking for parents to help by volunteering their time to help serve and/or cook. The barbecue will fire up at approx. 7am and it is usually in the first hour that we need the most assistance to prepare and cook the food. Please drop your son off and help if you can.
Although at times the canteen/barbecue may look like they have enough helpers, please come and offer your time as some of those volunteers may need to get to their son/s games. The canteen/BBQ during the Football/Rugby season is the Villa Sports Club’s main source of income and it can only operate with the help of Villa parents (both Football and Rugby). So please come along and help, meet some new friends and catch-up on what’s going on around the school. We hope to see you Saturday. Even if you don’t register, please come to the door and let them know your keen to help.
