Well done to our Firsts teams in Basketball, Rugby League and Tennis for their successes in Round 2 versus St Patrick’s College.
Moving around the grounds and courts last Saturday, it was pleasing to see the majority of our boys competing hard, but at the same time showing humility when victorious and being gracious in defeat. Of utmost importance is the way in which we carry ourselves and the standards we hold of ourselves and our peers.
There is a lot on the horizon for Villanova Sport within the next few weeks, outside of the weekly AIC Competitions. Our Senior AFL team are competing today in the AFL Queensland Schools Championships. They will play in the quarter-finals versus Nudgee College. Our Primary AFL team will compete at the semi-final stage of the ALFQ Primary Schools competition on Friday 18 August. Finally our Senior Volleyball teams will be competing at the Queensland Schools Cup tournament this weekend. Thank you to our valued staff members Mr Pascoe, Mr Conlan and Mr Kropp who will be supporting our boys throughout these competitions.
On behalf of the Villanova College Sport Department, I wish all students well in their sporting pursuits over the coming weeks.
It is our strong intention here at Villanova College to offer a professional, inclusive and evolving Sport programme. Our primary goal is to ensure that Villanova students are given opportunities to participate in Sport, regardless of their level of interest or inherent talent.
To truly be invested in strengthening our systems and processes around Sport, we must first be open to feedback from our families. The link below is an opportunity for Semester 1 sporting families to provide information on the positive areas of our programmes and the areas in most need of improvement.
A Sport Review will now be available at the end of each Semester, so a longitudinal analysis can be performed to ensure all of our (14) Sport programmes continue to perform, improve and evolve.
If your son(s) participated in Sport in Semester 1 2023, you are welcome to click on the link below and complete the form. If you would like to complete the form for multiple sports, please submit multiple entries.
Submissions may remain anonymous. Thank you for your valued and honest feedback.
Families are reminded to access all Sport information via the Villanova College website and the Villanova College App. The Locker Room tab provides updated information regarding training schedules and current AIC/trial draws.
The AIC Draw 2023 can also be accessed here. A note that in some cases, draws may not match the AIC draw. Families are encouraged to always check The Locker Room for accurate draws. Weekly Team Lists will be posted regularly to the Parent Lounge and Student Cafe Portals.

Congratulations to all Basketball players on this past weekend’s performance. For those who travelled to Shorncliffe, it was a beautiful day to be near the water. Whilst I didn’t see all matches, I enjoyed watching some entertaining play by our boys as we recorded some great results against St Pats. I encourage families to check out the full results posting, via the link above, to track the progress of each team. Finally, the biggest match of the day from Round 2 had to be the Villanova Wildcat vs the St Pat’s Leprechaun. I am proud to say the Wildcat took the win 2-0, congratulations to the Wildcat and the trainer Mitchell Voss.
Our First V Basketball team recorded their second win for the season, First V Coach Jordan has this to say;
“Last week’s game presented a test for our Villanova 1st V Wildcats that we expected with a fast-paced St Pat’s line up that did not stop coming at us. Mason Honeyman led from the front early, making some big shots and getting to the rim with ease. A long three from just over halfway to close out the half really put the St Pat’s outfit on the backfoot. The break came at an ideal time and the boys from Shorncliffe rallied to bring the Villa lead to single digits. Fouls proved costly for the Wildcats with several players being forced to the bench early, but solid performances from Brown, Gamer and Rheinberger allowed the starters a chance to manage the foul count. Big performances from the Wildcats front line of Ikitau, Moloney, Twaddell, Brown and Rouhliadeff cleaned up the glass and kept the scoreboard ticking over to take an 11-point lead.
Old Boys Round vs Laurie’s this weekend will be a test of adjustments and opportunity to improve on the defensive end by applying the lessons learnt from Saturday.”
Mr Jordan Mullan, First V Head Coach
A few reminders for this coming week;
All the best to our teams for this weekend v St Laurence’s College
Mr Todd Kropp, Basketball Coordinator
Congratulations to all our Rugby League teams on their Round 2 matches against St Patrick’s College. Villanova showcased an impressive performance, securing 5 wins and 5 losses during their games at Ashgrove. It was fantastic to witness all the teams scoring points and displaying some impressive attacking combinations.
Notably, our 1st XIII celebrated their first win of the season. The boys demonstrated their ability to score quality points, executing two early tries through the middle of the ruck and swiftly spreading the ball wide to score in the corners. St Pat’s were able to quickly capitalise on a few opportunities handed to them with a couple of quick tries at the start of the second half. I encourage our 1stXIII to maintain their positive and composed approach as they prepare for Round 3. Their potential for victory against SLC, SEC, Iona and Padua in the upcoming weeks is evident.
This weekend, we are facing St Laurence’s College, with our Junior School teams competing at Marist Brothers’ Ashgrove and our Senior teams playing at Villanova Park. Please refer to the posted draw on the website to find your team’s allocated time and field. Remember to allow ample travel time, ensuring you arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled kick-off, unless instructed otherwise by your coach.
I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of respecting our referees and officials and acknowledging their decisions on the field. While it’s natural to occasionally disagree with some calls, displaying utmost respect is crucial. By showcasing sportsmanship and treating referees and officials with respect, we set a positive example for our team and those around us. This fosters an environment of humility, understanding, and camaraderie both on and off the field, allowing us to continue enjoying the game we love.
I kindly remind all parents not to approach coaches, referees, QRL representatives, or any members of the opposing school. If you have any issues or concerns regarding rugby league, please direct them to the Rugby League Coordinator or Director of Sport.
Lastly, if you are unable to attend a training session, please make sure to inform your coach beforehand. This allows the coaches to plan effectively and make the most out of the training sessions. You can find the coaches’ contact details in the AIC Rugby League section of the Locker Room.
Wishing all teams the best of luck for this weekend. Remember to play within the spirit of the game and, as always, give your all to chase the win.
Mr Blake McLauchlan, Rugby League Coordinator
Tennis First IV
Following the disappointment of the close loss against Ashgrove last weekend, our First IV improved significantly this week in our second hit out of the year defeating St Patrick’s convincingly at Sandgate. Just like last week, our doubles performances were exceptional, winning three of the four rubbers convincingly and losing the other in a tie break. Stand out performances from our number one doubles pair Adam Zanatta and Reuben Wagels winning both their doubles sets 6-1 and 6-3 respectively.
On the singles court, once again we excelled winning three of the four rubbers and losing the other in a super tiebreak. Special mention must go to Oliver Simmons for his singles performance. After losing the first set 6-2 and down a 5-1 in the second, Ollie battled back to take the second set in a tie break. From there he took the momentum through winning the super tiebreak 10-5. An outstanding performance to fight back and then hold his nerve in both tie breaks.
We are looking forward to our first home game of the season this weekend at Morningside against one of the title favourites, St Laurence’s.
Mr Justin Musumeci, First IV Manager
Tennis
After a tough opening round against Marist College Ashgrove, I’m glad to report that we had some very positive results in our Round 2 matches against St Patricks College. After not getting the desired results in Round 1, It was so refreshing to see the Villanova boys playing each rally until the end fuelled by the support that they also received from the rest of their teammates. I know that a lot of players will take a lot of confidence out of last Saturdays matches, which will hold us in good stead for this weekend’s tough round 3 matches Vs SLC.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our First IV team who recorded their first win of the season with a 6-2 result against a very well-trained St Pats. This is particularly special knowing the Villa boys have been improving each round since the trials, showing their growth on the court in both skill and positive mindset. Sometimes it’s easy to underestimate your opponent and become complacent, but it was good to see that this wasn’t the case. Congratulations to the entire playing group and to 1st IV team manager Mr Justin Musumeci.
Can I please remind all players about the importance of making sure that you arrive in time for team warmups, this is at 7.30am for the first session and 10am for the second session. It places a lot of unwanted pressure on your teammates and team manager if you’re not on time, which usually results in the team order changing last minute and potentially even having to forfeit matches. Please allow additional travel time to your match venues.
This weekend our year 9-Opens teams will play at Morningside Tennis Centre, with our year 5-8 teams playing away at Griffith University Tennis Centre. As always, please check the weekly draw on the “Locker Room” section of the College website for all details.
I wish all Villanova sporting teams the best of luck for RD3.
Mr Nathan Dufty, Tennis Coordinator

Mr Marco Mastrorocco, S&C Coordinator
Zone Cricket registrations have been delayed as we navigate our way through the PlayHQ. Some clubs will begin their registration process soon, but we encourage our students to sign on for Villanova and play with their friends. There are different levels available for players who wish to challenge their cricket skills and ideally, we would like to keep our Term One teams together to prepare for AIC next year.
Villanova run the administration side of things, but the cricket program is parent driven. Over the last eight years we have been fortunate enough to have had Ross Whitby, Jeff Ilka and Phil Horton run all aspects of club cricket, from representative selections to registrations and logistics. The journey through Villanova for these three gentlemen has now concluded and we need parents to take on the delegates role to secure Villanova’s future in the district associations. At this stage, we have two parents, who have volunteered. If you would be keen to take on a role and help run the Zone Competition, could you please contact Mr Nathan Dufty in the Sports Office.
Our Term 4 Zone Cricket program includes.
Seven Villanova students represented Metropolitan East at the recent Queensland U12 Rugby Union Championships. Congratulations to Eli P and Dom B who represented Met East Navy and finished in first place. Well done also to Eamon S, Diezel K, Tommy M, Benji C and Fraser H who played for Met East White, finishing the carnival in third place. This is an amazing achievement for all boys and one they should be very proud of. Great effort boys!
Well done to our College Captain Mitchell Rieck who has been selected in the Queensland U20 Cross-Country team to compete at the 2023 Australian Championships in August. An outstanding achievement and we wish Mitchell all the best.
