AIC Chess

Chess will be played during the same season as Rugby and Football but during the Friday afternoons.

  • Round 1– Friday 21 August
  • Round 2– Friday 28 August
  • Round 3– Friday 4 September
  • Round 4– Friday 11 September

The amended chess season will be played in the latter half of Term 3. The boys who have expressed an interest to play chess have been notified that for the remainder of this term they can play each other online for practice. They have been notified of this by email and it is up to the individual to contact someone on the list to play. Hopefully, when we return in Term 3, we will start face to face play again on selected days for different groups to minimise the numbers. That information will become available at the start of Term 3. As more information becomes available parents and boys will be notified.

Year 5 – 12 Chess sign-on – List as at 8 June

Any questions or concerns should be directed through the Villanova AIC Chess Co-ordinator – Mrs Sally England Email:

Chess has become a very popular sport at Villanova College and is offered to all students. Chess allows students to socialise and compete against their peers in a variety of competitions held throughout the year.

The AIC Chess competition is held during Term 2 and all games are played on Friday afternoons or evenings after school.

The Villa Chess Club opens towards the beginning of Term 1 and organises the preseason training and selection program for all chess teams. A number of highly motivated and passionate staff run the College’s chess program and a specialised external chess coach is employed by Villanova to teach all the necessary skills and strategies needed to master the game.

The skills built through playing chess, such as mathematical, analytical, problem solving and strategy, are often employed in other areas of life, making this sport one of the most beneficial for inner development.

During the season, further information such as training times, team lists, staff, schedules and results is available on the College website.
