Comparison of a city of Ancient Sumer and modern day Brisbane

Cities of Ancient Sumer were very different from large cities of today. One of the many things that differs was the writing and literature. Our language consists of 26 letters and our writing has spaces between the words. The Sumerians had hundreds of markings representing many things and they didn't use spaces or punctuation.

Another difference is that in Brisbane we have underground plumbing to bring in water and pipes to connect with a toilet. This helps to reduce the spread of disease today. I think that the Sumerians had to use a hole in the ground or fill up a pot and dispose of it in a nearby convenient place. Also, we use water pressure and pipes to move water around. The Sumerians had to use aqueducts and other simple machines they had invented to move water.

Mesopotamia, a flat place, was the site of ziggurats. These buildings would have seemed very tall to the people then. However, compared to the tall buildings of Brisbane today, their buildings were much lower.

Ur was very different from Brisbane in many different ways. Not only observing the usual differences between cities in different countries such as language, culture and climate, it would be found that Ur and a modern city of today are completely different. Firstly, Ur's population was in the tens of thousands, while Brisbane's population is about one and half of million. Also, Ur took up less room, with homes being very close. Ur had a wall surrounding it to keep out invaders from neighbouring cities. Brisbane does not have any enemies close by and any invaders would either destroy or fly over any such walls. Besides, Brisbane is far to big to wall, even around the central section.

Brisbane is very hilly with many buildings of various heights. Ur was built on very flat land and all of its buildings were of uniform height except for its palace and ziggurat. All citizens of Ur worshipped the same gods, but Brisbane is made up of people with different faiths. Citizens of Ur waited anxiously for the flooding of the River Euphrates which enriched their soil and improved their crops, doing so on an annual basis. Brisbane's population recalls with dread its one major flood in recent times which caused much harm to people and property.
