1: Location of
Ancient Sumer

(map from work of Elliot &
Luke, Matthew & Nick)
NOTES ON MAP 1
Sumer was the land near
the Persian Gulf, lying between the two rivers,
the Tigris (to the east) and the Euphrates (to the west).
The rivers have changed course considerably since the time of Sumer,
having moved well away from some city locations.
In addition, theses two rivers used to have separate entrances to the
Gulf.
MAP 2: Locations of Ancient Sumer, Ancient Egypt and Akkadian Empire

(map from work of Andrew &
Paul)
NOTES ON MAP 2
Sumer was based around the
lower area between the two rivers shown.
Later, the Akkadian Empire absorbed Sumer, as well as a much larger area.
For comparison, Ancient Egypt is also shown; it was based around a single river.
MAP 3: Some of the
cities of Ancient Sumer
(and later civilisations)

(map from work of Damian &
Jonathon)
NOTES ON MAP 3
Major cities were
river-based, although the river courses have since altered.
The cities controlled areas of land around them, thus being referred to as
city-states.
The influence of each major city rose and fell as military and economic
circumstances changed.

MAP 5: Ancient City of Ur

(map from work of Conor &
Eric)
NOTES ON MAP 5
At its peak Ur was perhaps
the greatest city of Ancient Sumer.
The city was walled for protection, surrounded by protective canals from the
Euphrates River.
Ships involved in trading could berth in safe harbours.
The Great Ziggurat could be seen from a great distance, symbolising
protection and rulership of the city over the surrounding countryside.
