These views are intended to record the suburban Carina shopping centre area as it was in late May 2001.
Carina is a southeastern suburb of Brisbane, located between Camp Hill and Carindale.
The main shopping axis runs east-west along Old Cleveland Road.

The following article on the suburb Carina is from Quest Newspapers Special Publication, 20 May 2001
(The Quest newspaper, 'South East Advertiser' is an excellent source of local information)

The Carina sport complex came into being when some civic-minded residents decided they were sick of an area of tea tree swamp near their homes being used as an unofficial dumping ground for rubbish.
They cleaned up the garbage and made the first of several sporting fields.
Former Australian Test wicketkeeper Wally Grout helped to lay the practice pitches at the cricket field and they were promptly named after him.
A 19th century journalist named his daughter Carina and later his house in Creek Rd bore the same name. The name stuck and the district became known as Carina. A boom to the area came when the Belmont Flyer train began service in 1912.

(written by State Member for Chatsworth and Deputy Premier Terry Mackenroth)

Celebrations to mark the Centenary of Federation have provided Queenslanders with a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the history of our nation since 1901. While I cannot lay claim to being around quite that long the changes I have witnessed in the past 50 years or so have been remarkable.

When my family first moved to the Carina area in 1954 it was considered to be the outskirts of Brisbane. One of the local industries was wool scouring and the Carindale Shopping Centre was a resting paddock for cattle.

I used to ride my pushbike along a single lane road to the Carina State School and now you have to cross a four-lane highway just to get through the front gate. The trolley buses and trams are long gone and housing estates and playgrounds stand where farms and empty paddocks once lay.

Neighbours and school friends I played with when I was a child have grown up and have children of their own and many including myself, are now grandparents. It is these young people who I would encourage to celebrate the Centenary of Federation. By learning the lessons of the past they can take up the challenge of helping our community, State and nation grow and prosper over the next hundred years.
