MUSIC @ VILLANOVA
From Year 5 to Year 12,students eagerly participate
in the successful music program of the College.
Whether
it be performing in bands and orchestras, singing in the various vocal
ensembles or learning to compose music in our state-of-the-art
computer music classroom, boys find MUSIC to be an integral part of
their daily activities at Villanova.

In the Junior School,
all students in Year 5 learn an instrument
as part of our introductory program. Students are provided with an
instrument for a nominal fee, and tuition is included in the core
curricular program. In Year 6 the program is still performance-based,
allowing students to either continue their involvement in this
Instrumental Music program, or they may choose to be in the Vocal
Music program. Students are required to perform in one co-curricular
ensemble, one morning a week. Boys who remain on their instruments are
still invited to be involved with the Junior Vocal Ensemble outside of
school hours.
In the Middle School,
the boys are gradually introduced to the
elective music program on offer in the Senior School, whilst
seamlessly continuing their progress from the Junior School. The
performance-based music approach continues for the Year 7 boys in the
same fashion they have grown accustomed to in Year 5&6 on one day,
and they come a 2nd time to begin their curricular music studies in
the classroom. In the
Year 8 Curriculum, all students participate in an Integrated Arts
program as part of their enrichment activities, and the Music
Performance Program is co-curricular from this point forward. Most
students in Year 8 also opt to continue performing in the many
co-curricular ensembles described below. In the final year of Middle
School Music, Year 9 boys have the option of classroom music as an
elective subject for the first time.
In the Senior School,
Year 10-12 classroom music is an elective
academic subject, with many boys choosing to go the extra-mile by also
enrolling in Music Extension. Most boys find that the classroom music
elective strengthens their understanding of music and complements
their performance abilities.
Opportunities for Involvement: The
College now has over 30 performing ensembles including: Symphony
Orchestras, String Orchestras, Concert Bands, Vocal Ensembles, Guitar
Ensembles, Percussion Ensembles, Jazz Ensembles, Commercial
(Contemporary) Ensembles and Chamber String, Woodwind, and Brass
Ensembles.
Our students are also involved in all aspects of stage performance
in the biennial Musical produced by Villanova and Loreto Colleges. Our
senior musicians go on a Music Camp every year with Loreto as well,
where bonds are built that last through the school years and beyond.
Our top senior ensembles tour nationally and internationally, and play
host to visiting school ensembles as well. In addition, we have a
Music Stage Crew and Technical Crew, offering students training and
experience in backstage and technical, lighting and sound recording
and production.
